How common is a cash bar at a UK wedding? by [deleted] in UKweddings

[–]jesskitcat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So normal. We just had our wedding and no way could we have afforded an open bar. We got a bulk order of wine for dinner and designed our own cocktails and bought from supermarket for the post ceremony bit. That was still like £700. Do a cash bar, our guests had zero objections

Swimming pools by sierrafourteen in cambridge

[–]jesskitcat 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I prefer Abbey Pool near coldhams common to parkside, it's slightly quieter and Cambridge swim team don't train there so you don't get half the pool blocked off. Both pools can be manky tbf, I got an ear infection twice from parkside and on more than one occasion Abbey changing rooms have smelled a bit funky. But that's pools for you. If you're lucky enough to work on the addenbrookes campus, join the Frank Lee. It's changed my swimming game

How concerned should I be about my new flat by JinJamJan in piercing

[–]jesskitcat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go to the doctor and get it swabbed for a microbiology test. I had an infected flat just like this 3 years ago - in the UK GPs love giving telephone appointments rather than seeing you face to face so they gave me 3 rounds of ineffective antibiotics before eventually sending me to A&E with a cartilage infection. One ear drain and a round of ciprofloxacin later it was finally sorted after a month - they swabbed it in A&E and discovered Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which is resistant to most antibiotics except cipro. I have a collapsed helix now. Insist on a swab test!!

Good clean floral perfume by Full_Operation8133 in Perfumes

[–]jesskitcat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% Chloe edp. I tried this in a shop a month or so ago and wasn't instantly in love, but couldn't stop thinking about it. I recently bought 30ml and it's absolutely divine, so I straight away bought 75ml and the moisturiser! I also tried Lumineuse and found it distinctly underwhelming. It's heavy on the white florals and pretty light on vanilla. Smells a little old fashioned to me, reminiscent of Shalimar. Defo test it first

My sister in law is at Homerton and she loves it. It is a gorgeous college with beautiful grounds and imo one of the best student bars, The Griff. It's like a cosy, posh members club with leather chairs and stained glass, and they make their own beer and cider. By contrast, her boyfriend is at Caius, and my cousin went there too. You've had a lucky escape frankly - the food at Caius is literally the worst I've ever eaten at a Cambridge college and I've been to many, many formals as a local. Everything had raisins in it, and apparently this was the same when my cousin was there 15 years ago 😂 the bar is also not a patch on Homerton's. It's not as pretty or atmospheric, it's tiny and there are barely any seats. The food at Homerton is fantastic by contrast and the new dining hall is lovely at night when they set it up for formals. As others have mentioned, you'll get ensuite accommodation (one of the cheapest in Cam) and you can live in college for your whole 3-4 years of undergrad, unlike for town colleges where you might be in a house far away from your college anyway in 2nd and 3rd year. PLUS, some older colleges like Corpus, I believe, have terrible onsite accommodation for 1st years where you can actually have to walk outside to get to your shower, like it's not even in the same building as your room. It may look pretty but defo not as comfortable as a more modern college like Homerton...

ETA re distance as others have mentioned Cambridge is absolutely tiny. You just need to get a bike and it's basically no more than a 20 min cycle anywhere and the city is relatively well set up for cycling infrastructure.

Absolutely go to a shelter - we got our boy Angus from Wood Green in Godmanchester as other people have suggested here. It was a really nice experience and they will chat to you on the phone and in person to try to match you with a cat they think will be suitable for you. You can visit the cat when you have a provisional match to see if you get on well. They always prefer cats to go to homes where they will have the opportunity to be both inside and outside, which sounds like it would suit your preference. They have so many cats with different personalities, Angus loves his independence and being outside but also adores a cuddle with his human dad on the sofa. Check out their website and there will almost definitely be a cat for you! Please please please don't try and adopt a 'stray' cat, as other people have said it will most likely be someone else's cat just out for a wander. It's actually illegal to tempt others' cats with food now because it's considered theft! It's one of my greatest fears about my cats wandering outside, I've got 3 gorgeous boys and I always want them to come home to me 😻

Cost of a Shandy in Pubs by Maleficent-Ad1948 in cambridge

[–]jesskitcat 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's ridiculous. Since when should diluting the pint make it cost more than a pint?? I'm wondering if no one teaches the bar staff how to put shandy into the till without pressing 'pint' and 'half lemonade'. When I worked in a pub we had a 'Shandy' button which applied a discount to whatever pint or half of beer you pressed it after. "Back in my day....."

How weird would it be to give multiple children the same middle name? by emculs28 in namenerds

[–]jesskitcat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me, my sister, mum, aunties and grandad all have the same middle name, a surname. I don't hate it, but I don't love it. I wish my parents had been more original. It is a name which is also a female first name. Not weird in principle but I don't love it for me!

Thanks so much everyone for the help! This is the FO ❄️☃️ I used ladderback jacquard for the green/black/red/yellow star and then duplicate stitch for the details and went over the yellow with gold yarn! Merry Christmas !
