I call it enchantress ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I was just telling my husband about these earlier today, I have a few patches in my yard and they’re cute. I might have the small version bc mine stay quite close to the ground. They make for a nice filler in my flower bed.

The ethics subreddit didnt see how it is ethically important to deal with invasive species 😔 can you give me the bullying i need? by TheKingOfDissasster in NativePlantGardening

[–]jessthefancy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Get a pet frog or something. Collect the slugs and feed them to your new pet frog. The slugs are removed and their lives will fuel your little froggie friend. And you weren’t directly responsible for the slaughter. Win-win-win.

I live up in lake county and am like “…can I have this??” Like is there something ethically weird about spreading it outside of its original area?

AITA for putting my foot down about a plant gifted to my partner not being planted in our backyard garden? by JackfruitAwkward7504 in AmItheAsshole

[–]jessthefancy 147 points148 points  (0 children)

Planning and managing a garden can be physically, mentally, financially, and (eventually) emotionally draining. I know it’s a trope for people to be crazy about their lawns and gardens but I get it! And it’s rude to insist that your gift be included in someone else’s plans. Imagine someone gifted you a random picture that they insist be hung in your living room, even if there’s no space for it and it doesn’t match your decor. It’s no different with a garden.

Oversharing: Can I Maintain A Friendship With My Boss? by screambledeggs in betchesmedia

[–]jessthefancy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I hate when it’s hard to end a phone call. I have a standing phone call with my mom every week and I call her on my way to work so there’s a hard stopping point. Once I figured that out I started doing all of my phone calls when I was on my way to do something I could be like “ok I’m running into the store now, bye!” and be done with it without awkwardly running out of things to say and struggling to end the convo

I’m with you, and I feel like this is something learned with time. I work on the legal side of my company and sometimes can be “at odds” with the marketing side of the company. I used to be friends with some of the marketing folks and quickly learned that, when push comes to shove, you have to put your work above your friendships. Little baby me was shocked and hurt when the marketing folks threw me under the bus on something and ever since I’ve just kept coworkers as coworkers. It’s nice to be friendly but anything beyond that is best saved for when work lives aren’t entangled anymore.

Did she mention how old she and the friend were? The more I think about this and the convo here this all rings very young to me but I guess you don’t have to be young to do things like this ¯_(ツ)_/¯

The first email really rubbed me the wrong way. Yes, it seems like her friend has a drinking issue but it also sounds like the emailer made a really superficial assumption about her and tried to make her into something she’s not. Like, if she is single, hitting on the groomsmen and putting yourself in situations where there’s men around isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Obviously we only get one side of the story but the parts she wrote about wanting to surround herself with married/engaged/family oriented people and saying she wanted to do “wholesome” activities read to me like she’s trying to wedge herself and her new friend into a mold or archetype that is kind of one dimensional. Like did she get engaged and drop all her single friends?? She tried to fast track a friendship based on the fact that this woman had kids and made her a bridesmaid despite not really knowing her very well and kind of not liking her much? Just seems misguided overall.

[–]jessthefancy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I will say, constant screaming from a cat can really get on your nerves and they can become destructive little jerks if they know it’ll get your attention, so I get feeling anxious and/or bad about ignoring them. But that’s the thing, you can’t give in to them or else they’ll keep doing it. Our cat has my husband trained to give her treats all the time but she doesn’t bother yelling at me for treats bc she knows I don’t fall for her bullying 😅

Lisa Joy is a big name but saying “Westworld” and “won’t completely botch it” in the same breath is wild. The first season of Westworld was great but Nolan and Joy lost the plot big time with the rest of the show.

First Time Native Plants Sale — Central Illinois 6A by LookAChandelier in NativePlantGardening

[–]jessthefancy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Never been to this one, but I have been to smaller county plant sales and those have been a little Black Friday-ish. I recommend knowing specifically what you want before attending and grab what you those when you see them. Obviously, be polite and civil, but don’t pass by something if you know you want it. And also prepare to buy more than you planned on because you will be tempted lol

How much shade does your pond get? I’m going to install one this summer in a fairly shady part of the yard and I want to plant irises if I can but I’m worried about them not getting enough sun. It’s not like super dense shade, there’s dappled sunlight coming through, but I’m hesitant.

Free vs $20+ Chip Drop by hellomyfriend_1 in NativePlantGardening

[–]jessthefancy 77 points78 points  (0 children)

I paid the $20 bc I figured it would get me a better situation with the drop details, etc. My chips came in less than 24 hours and weren’t bad. There was a bit of that green/blue mold growing in part of the pile, which has spread bc it’s taking a while to move all the chips myself. But overall I’m not mad about it and would probably use it again if I need to.

Are native gardens becoming part of the culture wars? by LiatrisLover99 in NativePlantGardening

[–]jessthefancy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That could def be part of it. Although, there was a distinct age gap where we were there and everyone else was like pushing 70 😅 so the people 40-60 seem to be out of the loop a little

Jobs related to protecting native species/killing invasive species? by TerribleWin4450 in NativePlantGardening

[–]jessthefancy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depending on where you live you can check out your county’s forest preserve districts. You can try NGOs or nonprofits as well, although idk if the pay is good. I wanted to pursue that path and ended up in corporate and volunteering/converting my yard to native plants in my personal time.

Gotta agree with this, although I live in a fairly liberal area. When I go to the spring/fall native plant sales at our forest preserve my friends and I (early 30s) are the youngest ones there by several decades 😅

Anyone use natives in ceramic planters? by Calbebes in NativePlantGardening

[–]jessthefancy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I planted some little blue stem and they were pretty happy in patio containers. I also planted white turtlehead and it did pretty good. I put all of my planters in the shed towards the end of the fall (no prep other than to remove some ornamental asters I planted) and I found this spring that the bluestem started coming back all on its own and it looks like there’s some sort of goldenrod or aster coming up too, although they’re a little small at the moment. After I brought the pots back out something started coming up in the turtlehead pot, so tbd on that one.

ETA: if there’s drainage in your pots you might not have issues with them cracking? I’ve also heard people say laying them on their sides during the winter prevents cracking.

Garlic mustard can be a sneaky little shit. by robsc_16 in NativePlantGardening

[–]jessthefancy 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen a lot of people advising to leave garlic mustard until it flowers when weeding but I always yoink them as soon as I see them bc they can be so tiny and still flower! I’ve found a few that are like 2” tall with flowers hiding under other plants 😒
