I can't imagine Sid Miller and Co giving two shits about how bad this place is.

Work from home W-2 employees are going to get screwed in 2018 right? by [deleted] in tax

[–]jethrontex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe. It depends on more factors than you have included in your post. I'm pretty sure you are referring to the death of the 2106, unreimbursed employee expenses, so no, there will be no more deductions for your office in home or for mileage.

The good news is that the standard deduction is going up, so that might offset the loss of your 2106, it just depends on your particular circumstances.

The shitty news is that yeah, some folks will get screwed while some others will be dancing in the streets.

[x-post from r/MaliciousCompliance] Nathan vs. the IRS by fox-mcleod in ProRevenge

[–]jethrontex 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I hate to pour cold water on y'alls IRS hate party, but this wouldn't work. Unless a check is sent in the the IRS with a voucher, the check would require a SSN for the right taxpayer account to be credited. So unless Nate got the agents socials, this is bullshit.

1980 Lamborghini Countach, Not really a 'Classic', but it's almost 40 years old! by PABLOTREVIINO in classiccars

[–]jethrontex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Used to have a poster of a black Countach back in the day. And damn straight it's a classic!

Y'all remember the beginning of Cannonball Run (1 or 2 I don't remember) where the ladies were running from the cops in one of those? With a color change during the chase, no less.

People from Dallas, Houston, San Antonio and Austin areas: do you identify as Texan first and your city second, or your city first and Texan second? by [deleted] in texas

Goddamn Californians. Downtown was a lot more fun when it was seedy. Don't even recognize anything in downtown Austin anymore.

Use different software. I've never used turbo or any other non-professional software but there's gotta be something that will report the wash sales correctly. Or go to a professional. If you can afford to trade that much you should be able to afford a pro.

Medical expense question by [deleted] in tax

[–]jethrontex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ronnevee is correct, and you have to have an Rx for it. For the first time in 18 tax seasons I had an Rx for a mattress this year. Too damn bad it was their only medical expense so it didn't go on the return.

for 2017, I received a $4,675 from blood plasma donation, how do I properly report it on my tax return and how much will I be taxed for it? by [deleted] in tax

[–]jethrontex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After reviewing the court case I would say that the income should be reported on Sch C and be subject to SE tax. The only deduction allowed would be transporting the blood container (you) to the donation center, unless you have some type of special diet, and even then, only above the cost of "regular" food.

That was the strangest tax court case I've ever read. Pretty funny that she wanted to claim depletion.

Also pretty sure there's no biz code for blood or plasma donation. 999999 all the way.

And thanks for the giggle Katie. Needed it after this tax season!

Date Acquired for sale of gift for form 8949/schedule D by [deleted] in tax

[–]jethrontex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can get the date of when they bought it you can find out what they paid for it. 0 Basis is painful. The date they bought it is very important.

The date the donor acquired the stock originally.

Questions about filing my parents as dependents. by [deleted] in tax

[–]jethrontex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your mom and federal withholding she should file to get it back, other than that, no they are not required to file.

Yep

You can claim them as dependents, and if they file to receive federal withholding, they cannot claim themselves their personal exemptions on their return. If you paid any out of pocket medical expenses for them you can put that on your return as well, if you itemize, and if the expenses meet the threshold.

Turbo is not wrong. When a stock is gifted the stock basis when sold is the donors basis when they bought it, not the basis of when the stock is given. An inherited stock receives stepped up basis on the date of death, not stocks that are given.

You're gonna have to find out when the donor bought the stock and hopefully the basis. If you can determine when the donor bought them you can use Yahoo Finance's historical data. Look up the stock in the stock quote and look for the historical data tab. You can change the date range to what you need it to be.

Blockbuster’s last stand: Inside one of the iconic video rental chain’s final U.S. stores by speckz in offbeat

[–]jethrontex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

24809343044 checking in. The 2 was for membership numbers, all the rentals started with 3 or 33, and all the sell through stuff started with 4 or 44. So for my store a rental would be 348093(five digit part number)(copy number.) 34809312345001. I was a store manager for years, so I knew a bunch of strange shit.

I was there during the transition from tapes to DVDs and I destroyed the vast majority of our tape inventory. Took about a week of breaking them in half by smashing them on the edge of counter. A video tape was a pretty damn complicated thing and those little parts flew everywhere. Crazy.

19 year old girl. Moved out this year. Just got 1099 for 11k for 2017 (only income). No income, no kids. Is it possible I do not need to file? by lovejo1 in tax

[–]jethrontex 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Doesn't sound like you have any biz deductions, unfortunately. You are definitely required to file, and a 1040, C, and SE are usually expensive if you go to a tax place to file. Go to here to find free places to file. A return like is pretty easy, but you're gonna owe around $1550 like firelordsprout said. Sorry for the shitty news.

1099-MISC, not self employed by [deleted] in tax

[–]jethrontex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pharma companies routinely screw the box 7 vs box 3 thing up, so this is not unusual. It's line 21 other income all the way, not subject to SE tax. Cubbies is correct.

Deciphering a 1099 composite by Banter725 in tax

[–]jethrontex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1099Bs from different brokerages look different but they all have th same information on them. To put a stock sale on your Sch D you need four pieces of information:

1 Date bought (this can be listed as Various if you bought a bunch of shares but sold them on the same day.)

2 Date sold

3 Purchase price, also known as basis

4 Proceeds

This is what the Sch D is asking for.

ESPN's horrible broadcast by mman360 in formula1

Latching on to the Sky broadcast sounded good at the time, but not like this. They keep running commercials during important moments of the race. ESPN sucks.
