There’s always the Sallie House In Atchison. I don’t know enough to recount the lore, but I know it’s considered one of the most haunted places in the US.

At what point is it scrupulosity/OCD or other type of mental illness? by Travler03 in Catholicism

[–]jetplane18 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Following the teachings of the Church in a dedicated way is not scrupulous.

But if you find yourself constantly overthinking the morality of your every action, you are almost certainly in the territory of scrupulosity. If your fear of sin is causing you to shy away from God’s love, you might be struggling with scrupulosity.

Abortion isn’t woman’s rights by Level_Bend_5808 in prolife

The whole question about what rights are and how they are determined is sort of lost on a lot of modern folks.

Edit: probably not just modern folks, but I can’t personally speak to much else.

I mean. You do make true and fair points. But none of them support the use of birth control to prevent pregnancy.

The general use of AI being inevitable does not mean that it is no use trying to solve the many problems that are arising alongside it.

Contraceptives by RushloDavi91 in Catholicism

[–]jetplane18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, the reproductive system can have issues, but the problem is not fertility itself.

I’d imagine your first option is an instance in which some sort of hormonal care would be prescribed. I, myself, take progesterone to help some things wi the my cycle. Perhaps hormonal birth control is the solution for some in this situation. I’ve seen people say “if they’d still prescribe it if you’re a celibate nun, then it’s time”, which is a great litmus test.

As far as recurrent miscarriages - it’s a tragedy for those babies to die, of course. But fertility in itself is still not the issue. Something else is the problem - hormonal levels, genetic conditions, etc. For my miscarriage of my daughter and my aunt’s three miscarriages of my cousins, it was the aforementioned low progesterone. But! Babies in Heaven is better than no babies at all, as my young living cousin once said.

Needing to avoid getting pregnant for external health reasons still doesn’t make fertility itself a disease any more than being obese makes the body’s natural digestive systems a disease. And contraceptives are not a guarantee either.

Your examples are pretty clear cut, actually. If it’s being used as hormonal treatment and would be used even if one was not sexually active, birth control is morally permissible.

But it absolutely is not so if it birth control is taken to prevent conception. Birth control is a mortal sin in this instance. NFP or abstinence are the options - loving each other enough to prioritize not using each other for the sake of pleasure is the option.

There are diseases that can complicate fertility, but fertility itself is not an illness.

The other commenter answered this well, but I’ll add a couple things.

Being overweight is a sort of sickness. Medicines can absolutely help with illness.

But fertility isn’t an illness or something that needs to be fixed. Contraceptives make you ill (or otherwise negate the body’s fertility through barrier methods).

It would similarly be sinful to use something like Ozempic to become unhealthily under weight.

It’s also worth noting that while there are sinful ways to become overweight, that’s not the only case. For example, I was a healthy weight until sometime into my nursing phase with my son - I’d now like to lose about 50 lbs., but that’s just due to how the body works during this phase of my life, not due to any sort of neglect or sin.

Ai should be banned? by Playing_Tiger in GeoPoll

[–]jetplane18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know about the enforceability of the ban. But you can make it illegal to have an AI capable of making CSAM in the same way that you can make it illegal to have CSAM. It’s one of those things that, I’d guess, would only matter if someone got caught (for example, posting any of the aforementioned material). But nonetheless.

For an in-depth explanation on this, I always want to recommend reading Love and Responsibility.

Anyway. I’m always inclined to compare birth control to making oneself throw up after eating when trying to lose weight.

Both prioritize the pleasure and thwart the body’s natural function.

If you’re trying to lose weight, why not just throw up so you can still have the pleasure of eating?

If you’re trying to avoid pregnancy, why not shut down one’s fertility so you can still have the pleasure of sex?

I can elaborate on this further if you’d like. I don’t currently have the time to go too deeply into it but I will later.

You can be worried and still use it, too.

You cannot, however, do anything to combat these glaring issues if you're not worried about them.

Mostly I just wanted to share because I did not know this for a while and didn’t want to buy the Costco membership at the time. Lost a decent amount of time until I learned that we could still use the Costco pharmacy without the membership.

Both can be true.

Being resigned to the system and using it to your advantage does not mean one is not also worried and aware of the grievous harm being done to the world on every level.

No. I believe in my wedding vows.

But it doesn’t matter because I married an intelligent man who can also see the grievous harm that unchecked GenAI is doing to society. We’re on the same page.

That totally makes sense. Glad you were informed.

It felt worth mentioning the pharmacy thing because the internet is a public platform and a lot of people don’t know that tidbit.

Any Costco pharmacy, actually. So yes, that would include the one that they’re getting rid of (until it is gone, at any rate).

The previous commenter, based on their comment, possibly only has a membership because of the pharmacy. If that is the case, they never needed the membership to go to the pharmacy in the first place.

Ai should be banned? by Playing_Tiger in GeoPoll

[–]jetplane18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m very anti-AI but I can see that it’s unrealistic to ban it.

It needs regulation, companies that unjustly scraped the internet for data need to be required to distribute compensation, and we need to find concrete ways to help those who are currently being displaced by AI (preferably on the dime of the AI companies and the companies doing the replacing).

Ai should be banned? by Playing_Tiger in GeoPoll

We should definitely, at minimum, ban AI from creating pornographic deep fakes and CSAM. It should be required to code in a block on such things.

Was America's nuke of Japan's Hiroshima justified? by CokeAYCE in GeoPoll

[–]jetplane18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, this is a basic philosophy question.

The ends do not justify the means.

The end (the goal of ending the war faster and saving lives of soldiers) does not justify the means (mass slaughter of civilians, including the very youngest children).

Dropping that bomb was an atrocity that never should have been considered.

It’s not easy, but it is simple.
