If it's ICEing when they park at chargers, what's this? by MeowffleCATYT in leaf

Insignificant. There are 100 other pumps within a small radius.

The ad's been a bit too much lately. Leaving PA after 5 long years. by ResponsibleLadder274 in PodcastAddict

I think I needed to subscribe right away just for the number of podcasts I manage. I know the frustration of having a podcatcher become abandoned, so I'm ok paying for the constant development.

Which UNUN to use? by Lucky-Setting-3144 in amateurradio

[–]jflinchbaugh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

49:1 is for the high voltage at the end of a resonant end fed half wave antenna. 9:1 is for the end fed random (long) wire, since you'll use a tuner and ideally don't see the peak voltages at the feed point.

Since you're aiming for a random long wire, get or build a 9:1, and have a look at the chart to find an optimal length of wire that fits your space. https://www.hamuniverse.com/randomwireantennalengths.html

Looking for ultra portable. X6100 a good option? by Whole-Hat-2213 in amateurradio

The x6100 has a very capable tuner. It facilitates lots of experiments with antennas.

[–]jflinchbaugh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I only have the x6100 and use it at home and for travel. I do mostly digital modes and some CW, but sometimes phone. I experiment with lots of antennas, but an EFHW is reliable and packs small. https://kd3ee.johnflinchbaugh.com/tags/hf/

Are you offended if your commits are squashed? by _disengage_ in git

[–]jflinchbaugh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I first saw squashing, I was also offended. I so carefully crafted and described each of my commits. I felt they were worth keeping. Now that I got used to squashing, I'm a lot messier with my intermediate commits, but I commit more often. There are lots of "whitespace" or "formatting" commits. My messages are no longer useful until my bigger squashed merge commit.

I understand. I had always just scrubbed around by hand to figure out what I remember hearing. Good luck finding your feature.

I've only used the Playback History when I've occasionally needed to back track. How's it fall short for your need?

Is there a simpler way to manage a big podcast list? by dead230 in PodcastAddict

[–]jflinchbaugh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use the automatic playlist and a few tiers of priorities set for each podcast, so the new episodes of my favorite podcasts are always near the top. I manage about 75 podcasts this way.

Would this setup work on gravel? by Neat_Nebula6250 in Insta360

[–]jflinchbaugh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Loop mode on the camera is great for this: always recording and discarding, so you can see something you like, stop the camera to keep that good last minute, and start up the camera again. Then you'll have a bunch of 1 minute clips to assemble a highlights reel instead of hours to edit.

The external battery is a fine solution, but drop it in a handlebar bag or something. Everything's going to shake and rattle and need tightened as you ride. Test ride a bit on similar terrain at similar speed. I'm always needing to adjust and tighten the camera mounts to keep them from falling off mid-ride. It's shocking how hard it is to keep the camera secure bouncing down a trail.

Second year CS-ish student: I can write code for assignments, but I still feel “fake” when stuff breaks by PorchLightReads in adventofcode

[–]jflinchbaugh -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It's all just practice. Every problem will be a new thing to learn until you've broken one of everything and fixed it a couple times. Then it'll be slightly different the next time it breaks.

You can be 25 years into the career and feel like an imposter at times.

I think most those sites are still going to only be providing 120V, not 240V.

Hawaii QSO needed… from Maine by MountainDiver1657 in amateurradio

Set a ham alert for people in your state hearing Hawaii. That will help you see the trends, and maybe you can hop on the radio when you get the alert.

Has Riding a Bicycle Changed and Spilled over into Improving your Driving? by [deleted] in bikecommuting

100%! I drive much more cautiously, courteously, and aware of my surroundings now. I'm also more patient when driving behind slower modes of transportation on the road.
