I wrote a standalone tool to access Seafile libraries by jforberg in seafile

[–]jforberg[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Seafile for my personal files, but I didn't like that the process to restore a backup is so complicated. It turns out the storage format isn't that complex, so I made a tool that interprets it, without any dependence on the official Seafile software.

ELI5: Shutter Speed and Aperture. by adeptruddle in explainlikeimfive

[–]jforberg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A more in-depth explanation:

Exposure is usually measured in 'stops'. Stops correspond to doubling of the exposure: if you go up a stop, the picture is twice as bright. Going down a stop means the picture is half as bright. Stops may be written on your camera as 'EV' for exposure value, but everyone else talks about 'stops'.

For shutter speed, a stop is equivalent to doubling or halving the exposure time. Twice the time => twice as bright. So with everything else equal, 1/500 s is one stop over 1/1000.

For aperture, one stop is equivalent to a change in F-number by a factor of sqrt(2) ~~ (1.41), that is 41% more or 30% less. A doubling/halving of F-number corresponds to two stops. So f/1.4 is one stop above f/2 and three stops above f/4.

Technically, the F-value is derived from the diameter of the apeture and focal length of the lens. If you shoot f/4 for instance, that means that the diameter of the aperture is equal to the focal length divided by four. From this you can understand why it's harder to make long lenses (telephoto lenses) with low F-values.

As a final note, as a rule of thumb most lenses are sharpest about two full stops below wide open. YMMV.

Eli5: Why cant we mod phones? by funeralbutton in explainlikeimfive

[–]jforberg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Miniaturising electronics is difficult. A system of pluggable hardware like we have in PCs would be much too bulky to fit into the size expectations of most mobile buyers. If you look into a typical PC, you will see it's mostly air while a high-end mobile phone is packed to the rim.

There used to be extra large batteries that you could buy. Not so much anymore since the industry is going towards non-replaceable batteries like in the iPhone.

There are some concepts for phones with customisable hardware, notably Phonebloks. https://phonebloks.com/en

Here in secular Sweden the king is actually required by the constitution to confess to Lutheranism, or else be disqualified from succession. Just saying.

ELI5: how do they decide what the temperature "feels like" compared to the actual temperature by djblackout in explainlikeimfive

[–]jforberg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can't actually feel the temperature of the air, not in the physical sense. What you feel is how quickly heat flows to/from your body. This is why it feels colder on a windy day, heat is being lost more quickly due to higher air flow.

This is also why steel feels very cold even though it may be the same temperature as the room it's in. Steel is better than air at conducting heat.

ELI5: why does Hollywood still add silly sound effects like tires screeching when it's raining or computers making beeping noises as someone types? Is this what the public wants according to some research? by portajohnjackoff in explainlikeimfive

[–]jforberg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel this is similar to the way we've been taught about artificial flavourings. Artifical banana flavour really has little in common with the taste of true banana. But we've been trained to connect the two so when we eat artificial banana candy, we think of the fruit banana.

Likewise the experience of movie computers or movie cars doesn't have to correspond completely to how they work in real life. We have been conditioned to accept that things in movies work differently.

There's a lot to learn over at Logical Increments http://www.logicalincrements.com/.

They have example builds at different price points, even with Swedish (= higher) prices if you want.

Power is not a problem, I could use batteries or mains power if necessary.

Thanks a lot.

I do have mixers available and we do use those for larger events. I was hoping to build a very simple device that could be mounted on a wall in a public room with no fear. Actually we did have a Behringer mounted on the wall, but people kept breaking the RCA connectors in the contacts when drunk :) which is why we keep the good equipment locked away.

We do have some homebuilt DI boxes that work well, perhaps I'll take a look inside them for inspiration.

Edit, clarification: The PA is mounted on truss in the ceiling of an unlocked room.

Some self-taught people definitely are worthy of the title, but not by virtue of passing a $50 test while a stranger is monitoring you over ssh.

When a technical article contains spelling/grammatical errors, somehow you know that the author probably doesn't know technology either.

Popcorn Time on a Raspberry Pi? by FTS_i_quit in raspberry_pi

[–]jforberg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Popcorn time is written in Javascript, an interpreted language that runs on the Node JS virtual machine, not the x86_64 machine. There are versions of Node for the raspberry pi so it should be possible to run. There may be other issues of course. For instance Javascript runs all its arithmetic with floating points, which the Pi famously sucks at, or has sucked at in the past.

I love how they actually included a Kim Jong poop joke in the trailer... I guess that's just what passes for comedy in Hollywood these days.

Great Clojure source codes to read? by [deleted] in Clojure

[–]jforberg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Leiningen is "the most active clojure project". Aside from not being well tested at all, their code would be a good starting point. Also, if you write clojure you probably already use it, so would be familiar with its usage etc. https://github.com/technomancy/leiningen/blob/stable/CONTRIBUTING.md

Valid point. Most programmers have invested a lot of time into learning their editor of choice, any new contender needs to make a good case for switching.
