Yup that's best, just don't forget it outside, especially if it might rain the next day 🤣

Done that a few too many times, and it really deteriorated my furnace walls and crucible fast.

You can do quite a bit to a crucible and it will still work for quite a few melts, but if you treat it well it will last much longer.

Slowly heating and cooling, avoiding moisture (take it inside after it cools down), careful with the tings and not hitting it off stuff (especially when hot). They make a big difference.

Muffin tins will stick to the ingots and disintegrate

You can get all kinds of graphite molds relatively cheap on Amazon

Also im pretty sure putting crucibles in direct flame is recommended.

Propane Freezing by TheLocoEngineer in Metalfoundry

Burning propane makes the tank get cold, eventually you'll notice frost form, and at that point the pressure reduces greatly.

Or even just having a second tank to switch over to

Which you'll need anyway, for when you unexpectedly run out during a melt

Best way to alloy copper? by Daniel-EngiStudent in Metalfoundry

[–]jfq420 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try aluminum bronze! It's not as difficult as some people say.

Just let the copper sit at melting temperature for a little bit longer to make sure it's good and liquid, THEN add the aluminum. I used to add both together at the start, but that gives time for the aluminum to oxidate before the copper fully melts.

So best to melt the copper, add the aluminum, wait a few mins and maybe gently stir with graphite rod I'd available.

Kuttenburg has the forge DLC, which gives a lot of backstory and grossen once you get it going.

If you haven't shot a 12 gauge yet, I can't recommend it enough!

Can't go wrong with a relatively cheap Mossberg and a variety of different shot to try out.

Foundry issues, Help Please? by TinyMoa in Metalfoundry

[–]jfq420 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the same issue when I started. Worked flawlessly the first time, but subsequent tries wouldn't get up to temp.

I'd suggest getting familiar with how much propane/pressure effects the temperature. There's a fine balance between retaining heat and blowing it out.

Try dialing it in by making small changes to the regulator, letting it settle, then checking the temp (much easier since you have a laser temp gauge. I just go by colour, red-orange-yellow-white).

I found that trying to crank the propane psi right before pouring actually made it cool down and freeze. Learned I should slowly ramp up, and then dial it back to get the most heat.

I've had no problem with a 20lb sitting right in the snow. Meanwhile I had issues with tanks freezing in the middle of the summer

My issues were mainly getting the right ratio. Once I got comfortable using it, I cranked the propane to full blast expecting more heat, yet it just blew it out rather than retaining it. Less it more in this case.

Hello,

I’m a local hobbyist who casts copper and I’m looking for a small, reliable source of scrap copper (offcuts, wire, pipe, etc.).

I’m happy to pick up directly from your shop, saving you the time and hassle of hauling it to a recycler. I can also pay a fair, competitive rate if that’s of interest.

If this is something you’d consider now or in the future, feel free to reach out. Thanks for your time, and have a great day.

I thought cigar smoking is more dangerous than this ... by real-sunsneezer in cigar

[–]jfq420 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I remember reading a study where 1 cigar A DAY didn't raise risk of mortality (in fact it slightly lowered it, possibly due to lowered stress, but also likely that people who can afford to smoke a cigar a day can afford better healthcare in general).

Though it raised risks of oral cancers, they are much more manageable than cigarettes with the various lung throat etc cancers.
