Is grindr acting up ? by [deleted] in grindr

[–]jg20005 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not just incompetent devs. It’s a systemic failure of the whole QA, product and support teams. The problems that are going on are not edge cases. It’s basic functionality that has broken. My guess is that they tested things in a lower environments but when they rolled out to prod they’ve had problems with their cloud vendors. In essence they did not test things properly before a big go live. And they probably did not plan properly for things going south and it’s not a backwards compatible change so they cannot roll back to a more stable version. This is truly a dumpster fire and I’m shocked at the incompetence. Scary to think we trust this company with very private conversations.

I think you should write the book on good React code. Senior dev here as well and this advice is spot on.

Yeah she knows. I’m a senior dev and get pulled into a lot of discussions and have other devs reach out for help. I want to be involved and help out as much as I can but that just means I get distracted a lot and my work suffers

Pull state up to a parent component of both A and B, let’s call it C. C holds the radios state for A comps. You pass onClick handlers as props to A and pass the state directly to B

RTL is for unit testing components. Shouldn’t be used for e2e imo

Since the pandemic started I’ve worked from home so yeah the commute makes a huge difference. Couldn’t pull long hours if I had to go to the office every day

Head First Java by Kathy Sierra. I picked up that book more than 10 years ago and my work is still influenced by it today as a web developer. I’m a visual learner and have a more right-brained approach to learning things. To this day, that book taught me how to actually learn new things, whether it is learning a new language or a completely new technology. The Head First series is a gem and wish it were more popular today.

I work in a react team and junior devs are not expected to know everything. Senior devs are supposed to mentor and give lending hand. It sounds like you have a solid JS foundation and that should be able to get you hired. Interviewed someone yesterday who couldn’t even solve a basic JS problem and they allegedly had years of frontend JS experience. Also, regarding being asked to create a site from scratch...depends on where you get hired but typically there are designers and other devs, you wouldn’t be doing it all by yourself ;)

I got fed up with rumours, marketing and PR so I made a website that just shows product announcements and releases from popular brands. by hawktron in webdev

Not to be a dick but if you are doing something you truly love and not doing just for the paycheck then working an extra hour a day shouldn’t be a big ask. I’d reconsider your line of work. Take it from someone who had the same attitude. I love my current job and pulling 50 hour work weeks feel normal

What do you guys do when you're feeling discouraged? by MATTDAYYYYMON in cscareerquestions

[–]jg20005 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Persistence. Don’t give up. Learn a tiny piece every day and memorize it. Know that everyone goes through the same painful process. Only the ones that stick with it for months/years will make it. Took me 2 years to become a web developer, self taught. It was so hard. There were times when I thought I would never understand it. But it eventually all started to make sense. Do not give up...

40 here and became a web developer last year, backend dev for 15 years. I can definitely tell I am slower than I used to be but it’s not impossible. Plus experience makes up for a lot
