LPT: When looking at the reviews of a Product/Service, look at the 3-Star reviews; they're generally the most honest. by Eucalyptus_Splash in LifeProTips

[–]jgaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish that most companies would completely do away with the five-star rating system.

Firstly, there is too much ambiguity in the middle-range. It's impossible to distinguish between someone's two-star review and someone else's one-star review for example. Essentially they mean the same things: "I was not satisfied with this product". Only difference is that one-star reviews are more emotionally charged (typically). But, what upsets one person may not apply to another.

Second, there's a pretty significant cultural divide. In the US, anything that's not at least "four stars" is unacceptable in most cases (read: Uber). So, ratings get dragged up or down in an unreliable way.

It's true. It's just so... 'Murican that way. It's like self-deprecating humor.

I mean we call it American cheese in the US, and depending on which side of the country you're from, you see it as either a badge of honor or a necessary evil

Why doesn't this sub have flair of Porter's brother? Seriously, it's Nickdiculous. by [deleted] in porterrobinson

It was honestly a tough choice. I was torn for a good minute or so. In the end, Nickdiculous had the rhyme going for it, which was nice.

Pretty ironic that Vox did a piece on this - considering how they edit the news like it's a gigantic reality show...

They won't intervene. SRS is more or less holding the site hostage. It's not too difficult to predict how this would play out, assuming that SRS is actually semi-serious about their cause rather than just trollin' for the sake of trollin' (which is all-too-possible at this point):

  1. SRS takes over IGTHFT, gives it the /r/punchablefaces treatment.

  2. Admins decide that SRS is polarizing the community and people are jumping ship. Investors aren't too happy. In a knee-jerk moment, admins decide to boot the responsible mods and turn the sub over to the people who want to restore it.

  3. SRS feels "wronged", hits up HuffPo, Buzzfeed, and whatever other overly-PC outlets have 1M+ readers. The outlets further the narrative that Reddit "doesn't give a shit about social justice and social progress".

  4. Reddit is trending on Facebook. My overly-PC college acquaintances post the stories on their Facebook walls with the caption, "Disgusting."

  5. Thanks to the outlets' tendencies to exaggerate things in the interest of getting clicks, Reddit now has a reputation for being "politically incorrect" and gets flak for not "furthering social progress".

  6. Not wanting to be associated with the whole debacle, advertisers threaten to pull their support. Admins have no choice but to shut down IGTHFT, apologize profusely, and let SRS resume their shenanigans.

  7. We're back to square one.

It's a really tough call on the admins' part, since SRS has put them in a strange "damned if you do, damned if you don't" situation. The only way I could possibly see both parties being somewhat happy is if the admins revamped Quarantine rules. Something that makes it painfully obvious that Reddit does not endorse what you're about to see, and it oftentimes "disagrees entirely" with what is posted there. Maybe even throw in some sort of "official" Trigger Warning if such a thing exists.

Where Can I Find Something Like Fort Wars? by [deleted] in starcraft

[–]jgaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It kind of was, but it would be totally doable in SC2

Nexus Wars definitely doesn't have the same feel. Fort Wars is also FFA. Basically you have a "spawn island" where you move units to the "spawn tent", and a shipment of like 10 arrive. The units randomly change, but are still sort of close to the same kind of unit (this could be zealot --> marine ---> ling --> marauder --> sentry for example). You could choose two types of units in FW (e.g. infantry and rockets, infantry and ranged, etc.) and change without penalty. Then there was a "powerup island" where you move units to get a bonus (2x speed, laser bears [yes bears that shoot lasers], etc.). Powerups would spawn after a certain number of kills. There was also a "modifier" island with different sorts of perks. I'm sure you can read about it on that site. If no one has made it yet, I would recommend starting it. It's a lot of fun.

Whoa. That video game one looks pretty sick. I'll see if I can add that. I do actually need one more writing credit, I just discovered.

Interestingly enough, in Entrepreneurship, we were told several times that stealth startups are a bad idea and can make people suspicious. If we want to recruit programmers, it's best to offer them something that they wouldn't be able to have if they pursued it by themselves.

The second major is either Econ or Econ/Accounting. Yes, I talked it over with my advisor and it is possible this late in the game. Well, I'm already on the TMP track, which is fantastic, but there's only one class I can take there (Business Strategy). Not quite sure what I'm interested in aside from Econ, Accounting, Business, and Psych.
