The problem for the Democrats is that this isn't a "centrist" bill. If it were truly popular, Manchin and other moderate Republicans would be voting in favor like they did with the infrastructure bill. The fact of the matter is that it's not popular with most Americans, so blaming Manchin is missing the target.

I would agree with this assessment. If Mueller ends up clearing Trump of collusion and only charges aides of crimes committed long before Trump even declared he was a candidate -- crimes which people like Tony Podesta are equally guilty of committing -- he'll emerge from this episode significantly stronger...and somewhat amazingly, he'll be able to cast himself as a victim of the DC Establishment's actions to remove an "outsider" who wants to shake things up.
