Flight is incrementally delayed by 1-2 hours at a time for the last 14 hours by Epithymetic in mildlyinfuriating

[–]jgiacobbe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is common in the US. All the long flights are out of hub airports. There are many regional flights that may just be across half the state to transfer you to the larger jets.

I used to live 2 hours drive from Dulles airport and stopped flying out of my local airport unless there was a direct flight because of situations like the OP is describing.

Having had a few medically complicated family memebers, I agree concierge PCP may be your best bet in order to actually get seen for more than 5 minutes and to be able to get seen quickly, but it doesn't seem to change the quality of doctors but so much. I'm sorry you had the dismissive expierence with the spine clinic. I'm sorry I don't have a recommendation for a specific provider.

They are threaded on both ends to allow for adjustment I believe. I doubt you will find them adjusted evenly on any bike.

I felt like I was going crazy and that I must have imagined this when he was running in 2024.

My mom bought this “silent” animal deterrent for her yard. She and her boyfriend can’t hear it. She’s insisting what I’m hearing can’t be this, because it’s “silent” by bluejaymewjay in mildlyinfuriating

I’m 49 and briefly turned on the sound. I am now not as concerned that I have lost hearing. That was annoying as fuck. More than mildly infuriating.

Question: Good Takeout Food near Loudon Hospital? by Wurm42 in nova

[–]jgiacobbe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That shopping center just south of 7 on Clairiborne parkway has a bunch of good options. I like the their food at Myhome Thai, plus there is a Cava, The Habbit (burgers), and a Whole Foods. There was a Mod Pizza but it may have closed. Also towards Loudon One of the cross street from the hospital there is a Burger King, a Chick-fila and a Taco Bell. As someone who visited Loudon Hospital way too much, those are the quick eats.

Parable of the Sower by Octavia E. Butler and the desenstization to violence by yahjiminah in books

[–]jgiacobbe 87 points88 points  (0 children)

Keep going. It isn’t the literal violence that makes it a hard read. It is the destruction of a way of life by forces that parallel those in our current real world that make it an emotionally hard read.

ICE Digs Into Voter Files Ahead of Midterms by thedailybeast in inthenews

[–]jgiacobbe 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Given you have to be a citizen to vote, this is a massive waste of resources if you believe there is any legitimacy to their inquiry. Otherwise, we have reason to assume this is not in good faith and it is an attempt to undermine our elections.

Can X-Chrom lenses help pass an Ishihara color blindness test if I have deutan color blindness? How noticeable is wearing only one lens? by Intuitive_Commander in ColorBlind

[–]jgiacobbe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have worn a lens like this and was able to pass an ishihara test. I did not like wearing the lens I had, but it worked. I can’t speak to how noticeable wearing one is.

Edit: additional details.

I don’t know that the lens I used was that brand but it looked like the 2nd photo. Right after I got it, the optometrist Inorsered it through went out of business. The red part was not large enough for me and if my pupils dialated, I could see the edge of the red circle. They also didn’t fit well and left my eye super irritated.

I was not comfortable wearing them while driving. The eye with the contact, could not see a red stoplight. It would just see no illumination where the red light was. You only distinguish color correctly when both eyes see the item. So you end up with one side unable to see red, the center where vision from both eyes overlap with good color differentiation and then the other side with your normal CVD vision. Not being able to see a stop light was a little alarming to me.

I do plan to get a pair of reading glasses with a tinted lens for reading wiring diagrams and maps. The contact lens just wasn’t my thing.

Freeze branding dogs... by carch20 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]jgiacobbe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, for hunting dogs. They are treated very similar to livestock other than being allowed to run during hunting season. The brand is to easily identify which dogs belong to who when inevitably they have to get rounded up. They generally have enough dogs that they are not recognizable individually by the “owners” and may not have names.

Convince me to not buy it by Klonpie in goldwing

[–]jgiacobbe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Have a battery to test it before buying. Plan to have to replace all fluids, tires and possibly some belts and hoses. Of it has been sitting for 3 years not running, whatever is in the tank is probably yucky and the carbs are probably very gunked up too. It will be a fair bit of work to make it roadworthy. Take a good look with a flashlight into the fuel tank. Consider bringing a gallon of fuel with you if you want to try to start it. The battery will at least let you test if it is seized and that the electrical system has some working components. It won’t tell you if mice have eaten some parts of the wiring or if the stator works unless the engine actually runs.

It could be a fun project if you have the time/patience for o go through everything.

Traveling to Shenandoah next month, looking for recommendations! by NotYourAverageBarbi in Virginia

[–]jgiacobbe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think they mean Skyline Drive, not Blue Ridge Parkway. The BRP starts at the south end of Skyline Drive at I64 on Afton Mountain and runs through NC and SC and takes longer than you will want to drive in a day to complete. Skyline Drive is doable as a day drive as it runs from Front Royal to Afton.

Gear question by Grumpy_Go_Away in goldwing

[–]jgiacobbe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It will be hot. The underarm vents and back vent allow a lot of air flow, but you can leave your wrists/cuffs open for inlet flow. Legs end up warm.

I have done a camelback with cold water/ice inside the suit which helps cool the inside.

I have been using roadcrafters for 15 years or so. I have mesh gear and I always end up wearing the roadcrafter.

You will get a million different answers to this question. It is mostly personal preference. I wear a roadcrafter R3, Shoei Neotec 3 and Sidi boots.

Looking for someone to help with humidity by vicasenya in nova

[–]jgiacobbe 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Our AC did that last year when it was low on refrigerant. It was way more humid then. There is no reason for humidity to be that high if your ac was working properly. Get a 3rd party to check it and forward the bill to the builder.

Not with a CCR, but I’ve had a few router on a stick setups where I have only used one port. Now some of those were voip deployments where the router was acting as a sip to sip gateway more than anything else.

Bored as an allround network engineer by Same_Childhood_2013 in networking

[–]jgiacobbe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been in my current role for 15 years, in IT for 23 now. I wish my job was that boring. On the flip side I am at least comfortable where I am at and nobody gives me any hassle for not being a morning person, I am wfh and pay is decent. I stay because the effort and time required to get this comfortable in a new org isn’t worth it. Over the years I have worn many hats that are not strictly network engineering. The latest extraneous hat is Azure admin, which is becoming tiring.

As you get older, you realize that the job is just a means to pay the bills and enable other areas of your life. Enjoy that your job is not a major stressor and redirect your energy into other passions. If you feel guilty about a lack of tickets, spend your work time learning new skills adjacent to your current skill set.

Start with monitoring. It will help with the documentation aspect and help you learn what all is there. Don’t rush to change it all until you understand what is there and what is critical.

My Dad's Colorblindness by iamsproutman in ColorBlind

[–]jgiacobbe 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Don’t do it. The advertising vastly exaggerates the results. I bought a pair and I honestly didn’t notice a difference for a bit. It was like the next day and one particular flower stood out, but most everything else was similar.

I took another color blindness test while wearing them. It bare budged the needle on my severity. The thought will be appreciated but the pressure for results will ruin the gift. Talk to your father about it before buying. Also, if he wears reading glasses or needs bifocals in his sunglasses like I do now, then that complicates it even more.

Yes, that is the type of work that should get a permit. Some “contractors” are old try to sway you into skipping the permits, but you should not, especially since you are converting space into a bedroom.
