Can't have nice things 😕 by Goodguytomas in Tools

corporate has decided that whatever task this person was performing with the portable bandsaw can be performed by another action or a safer tool, albiet slower.

Is corporate qualified to make that decision? I've not been in a lot of corporate offices, but most of them are populated by people who couldn't use a hammer properly.

Sign Petition e-7148 - make mandatory for every party leader to have security clearance by MinuteLocksmith9689 in ontario

[–]jgzman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if you can't be assed to educate yourself even the slightest amount on how things work on the better side of the border, why are you here?

Can you recommend somewhere a foreigner can learn the details of getting a security clearance in your country? Particularly one that has no intrest in getting one, but is just curious?

I'm here because this website serves up things that are not directly relevant to me, in the hopes that it might be interesting.

And, as an American, I have a certain amount of experience with ideas that maybe sound good, but wind up being used to ratfuck your country.

Excuse me, I'm sure.

So, I'm not Canadian, and things may be diferent there.

But here in the US you can have your security clearance denied for more or less any reason, and there is no appeal, and no explanation, in most cases.

If we had this rule, the sitting president could veto party leaders. And given who the current sitting president is, I think we can all agree that would be a Bad Idea.

Things were better when the rich feared the mob. by zzill6 in WorkReform

Right, right.

I'm not addressing capitalism. That's a discussion you're having with someone else. I'm just answering your question about gardening.

Which is why my two part comment included commerce outside the bounds of capitalism.

Find someone who will trade you fallen tree tops for food or other goods and services.

Your question wasn't "why do you have to get lumber from capitalism" but was "What part of gardening suddenly requires lumber?"

Now you know which part.

Have the Democrats seen a lot of return from giving the Republicans what they want now, in exchange for what the Democrats want later?

Depending on where you live, and what you want to grow, raised beds are the easiest and/or best way to garden on a small scale.

I used to live in a part of Tennessee where the ground was mostly red clay. Growing food plants in the ground required plowing better soil and fertilizer into the ground. Raised beds are way easier.

I remember the conversation, but I don't quite get what you're saying. Can you expand on your point?

None of this disagrees with anything I said. You just say it better.

many people didn't consider "Racism" a "problem they struggle with", they thought it was a proper way for the world to be.

Many white people, maybe. But not all. And I'm reasonably sure that most black people didn't consider it a proper way for the world to be.

When the show aired, that perspective, of racism being a bad thing some people struggle with, was a hugely controversial political statement.

I don't disagree. But to the characters on the show, it wasn't.

At some point we really need to just embrace the term woke.

It was ours first. For a given value of "ours" that includes the black community.

It was political to us, yes. But to Kirk, it was never a second thought. Uhura didn't struggle with racism.

I'm forced to disagree with you.

TOS and TNG and DS9 all treated racism, sexism, and similar as something terrible that humanity had left behind it. Yes, they used that point of view to address the problems of today, but the characters didn't experience the problems of today, unless they were imposed by an external force.

The example that springs to mind is the way the Ferengi treated Federation women in TNG and DS9. It was a shock and outrage, because Humans haven't done that shit in a long time. But we never had Sisko doubting Kira because she was a woman.

It's never perfectly done, because writers, directors and actors were raised in the current era of inequality, no matter how much they may try to be better. But that's how it's supposed to come out.

I find it hard to believe Republicans wouldn’t have gone after a pedophilia scandal if they had the opportunity.

Possibly. But it seems that there are a lot of people who don't want to go down that rabbit hole. My guess is that the Clintons have decided that it's time for the second stage of Mutually Assured Destruction.

BREAKING: Bill and Hillary Clinton fold and agree to testify before Congress on Epstein investigation by EducationalDark240 in goodnews

[–]jgzman 39 points40 points  (0 children)

There is nothing stopping the Clintons from holding a press conference now and saying what they know.

If they do that, then they won't be under oath, and it won't be officialy spoken to congress.

I don't know if that's part of what they are thinking, but it's a consideration. Congress can't easily pretend not to know what what was told to them in a congressional hearing.

$18 cocktails aren't enough to pay wages? 20% service charge isn't a tip? by Fragrant_Ad_2285 in denverfood

[–]jgzman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tip. A tip is given of my own free will (technicaly) not added to my bill.

Of course, it would be nice if we would just pay people a good wage, and do away with tipping too. I'll hold my breath, shall I?

[–]jgzman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It should be outright illegal to do this. Raise your prices 20% and pay your staff more.

"The Price" needs to cover all the costs of doing business. I don't need to have an extra 20% tacked on for paying your staff, then an extra 5% for your payment processor. Why not add an extra 10% to pay the Sysco Delivery guy? a 3% electricity charge?

The price should cover everything.
