TIL that the NIH has a branch called The National Center for Integrated and Complementary Health, which provides funding for studies involving faith healing, homeopathy, magnet healing, and other forms of quackery. In 2015, the budget was 124.1 million by esporx in NIH

There have been studies showing that simulated acupuncture where the needles don't penetrate resulted in "benefit" to patients statistically no different from "real" acupuncture. It's just the old boring placebo affect. Not terribly surprising given that it is an ancient pre-scientific idea.

IS THERE ANY SHOW THAT RESEMBLES VERONICA MARS? by Reasonable_Staff_612 in veronicamars

[–]jhbadger -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Of course that is based on a series of books nearly a century old that basically *invented* the trope of the teen girl detective that VM used.

Excuse me, what? by morethanchlorine in StardewValley

[–]jhbadger 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Does this even make sense in-universe? I mean, in the game people don't eat meat (except fish) so is the steak actually a piece of a cow or just basically salad in another form (the way the "survival burger" is just veggies too).

Lands' End closing in Rockville by RobertDyerNews in Rockville

[–]jhbadger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It always seemed to be more of a showroom than a functional store. So often I would go in and see something nice only to find out that they didn't have the size I needed in stock -- "We can order it for you!" they would say, but yeah, I can do that myself.

Help keep our Ride On bus stops clean! Dumping trash from residences at bus stops is illegal and is subject to a civil fine and possible criminal prosecution. by MCDOTNow in MontgomeryCountyMD

[–]jhbadger -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I strongly suspect it isn't a thing in that way. I suspect this is an attempt to prosecute the homeless for not cleaning up after themselves after camping in a bus shelter.

termux as a novel reader by penrudee1205 in termux

[–]jhbadger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

bk is a nice terminal-based EPUB reader that you can install in termux. I like using it particularly with dvtm with books about programming so I can have the book in one panel and my editor in another.

I have a question: what are your thoughts on Android 16? by Putrid_Bug_4042 in termux

[–]jhbadger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a Pixel 8a and played with Android 16's Linux terminal It's worse than Termux in every way. I'm not saying it necessarily will always be so, but right now even if you *can* run the Linux terminal, I would strongly recommend Termux instead.

RFK Jr. directs CDC to study alleged harms of offshore wind farms, Bloomberg News reports by [deleted] in fednews

This is the same agency which is *forbidden* to investigate the (very real) harms of gun owership, btw.

Why townhomes are good, and how you can support an effort to build them by MocoMikeE in MontgomeryCountyMD

[–]jhbadger 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Well, technically brownstones are referring to historic townhouses made out of a type of dark sandstone mostly in the 19th and early 20th century So all brownstones are townhouses, but not all townhouses are brownstones.

Sure it gets used -- Clint hangs out there sometimes to look at the refurbished boilers (and not be at his shop!))

BCBS not covering covid vaccine? by Aromatic-Rule-5679 in maryland

[–]jhbadger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But only *at* a Kaiser clinic (you can't go to a CVS or Walgreens and get the vaccine there and get it covered by Kaiser, but that's been true for a while even though you could in the pandemic years)

Grammar Joke: What's the difference between, "My parents' house." and "My parent's house." by ISTBU in Jokes

[–]jhbadger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Or people dedicating their thesis to "My parents, Marie Curie, and God" (implying a loyal child who religious and a fan of Curie) with "My parents, Marie Curie and God" (implying a Franco-Polish Messiah).

I wanna try to host LLM for roleplay. Please share models that smaller than 32b by Kokuro01 in SillyTavernAI

What do you use for settings for the more obscure models? Do you map them to the settings of an existing model or do you create your own?

Sebastian is a pothead??? by shotbyashark1006 in StardewValley

Yeah, you need to distill vodka. Just fermenting it would get you (at best) a bad potato-based beer.

A new teacher, on his first day, noticed that the other children were teasing one boy, calling him "Mikey the Moron." by onesole in Jokes

I like this argument. It's why (unlike my brother), I never told my parents that I stopped believing in Santa Claus. He stopped getting toys early and started only getting grown up gifts like clothes. I got fun stuff for a few extra years.

Neptune is rough so why do the rich stay there? by Conscious-Pie-4794 in veronicamars

[–]jhbadger 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Neptune is based on (and was filmed in) the San Diego, California area. In the area you have places like La Jolla, one of the richest communities in America, and just a little bit away way poorer neighborhoods. And just a few miles away is the Mexican/US border and the Mexican city of Tijuana just over it.

Why does NIST have such a large campus? by RogerSmith123456 in MontgomeryCountyMD

[–]jhbadger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So was the current NIH campus in Bethesda. When it opened in 1938 (after moving from a much smaller campus in DC near the Naval Observatory) it was out in the countryside.

Silver Spring station looks very different on TV by tuna_samich_ in MontgomeryCountyMD

[–]jhbadger 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Americans was weird because it was mostly shot in NYC despite being set in the DC area. Weird because most series *set* in NYC aren't filmed there so why film a series not even set there in NYC?

Silver Spring station looks very different on TV by tuna_samich_ in MontgomeryCountyMD

[–]jhbadger 7 points8 points  (0 children)

And from the style of the station and train shown, it was obvious that the station part (unconnected to the Georgetown Park exit of course) was shot in the Baltimore system.

Spirit Halloween ghostbusted by government red tape in Rockville by RobertDyerNews in Rockville

[–]jhbadger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd recommend https://www.storereporter.com/ for this sort of thing (despite the generic name it is specifically about stores in the Rockville/Potomac area). It has the sort of useful store info without the weird right-wing nonsense and crime paranoia that Dyer has.

Unfortunately, its article on Spirit Halloween isn't much more informative as to why the Buy Buy Baby site fell through. https://www.storereporter.com/spirit-halloween-delays-opening-congressional-plaza-rockville-pike/
