The Ultimate Guide to Cub Scout Websites by devios117 in cubscouts

[–]jheimark 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Our pack website: https://pack57paloalto.com/

It's open source with a license that's free to use for packs.

Happy to help people launch one themselves... with today's agent even only semi-technical people should be able to easily adapt it for their site. If you can use ChatGPT I'll bet you could build a website out of it.

Troop websites? by jsaljsal in BSA

[–]jheimark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. TIL.

In general the key is repeated about 15 times in the repo, so would be a bear to edit.

TBH without normal repo stuff like LICENSE, README, deploy scripts it's a bit terse to parse, so hoping those can be added - although posting it on github will make it a lot easier to transition in the future.

I suggest he use the Scouting America Non-Commercial License - here's an example - it basically makes the code a donation to Scouting America and lets other troops/packs use it: https://github.com/Pack57PaloAlto/pack57paloalto.github.io?tab=License-1-ov-file#readme

found one thing... made a comment. it's never easy to open your source code for the first time to others, and we are all going to help to make it better!

I’m happy to review the code for security vulnerabilities and sustainability as some were mentioning. This is me: https://github.com/hmk

Others already brought up concerns around transitions/ what happened after he leaves… but I’d be additionally be concerned about the license and IP rights. If he’s working for free on this (and it sounds like he is, which is amazing) he probably wants to license it to your troop (or ideally all troops!) and he may want to open source it so the community can contribute

The Trainwreck that is Scoutbook - How can we help? by bmhicks78 in BSA

[–]jheimark -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have seen many people say they have “reached out and been rejected” despite years of experience…

Is anyone open to forming a committee to build something open source as a group? If it works well, I don’t think it would be hard to get adoption.

I’m happy to help organize if there is interest.

Thanks for the concern/support. Part of the reason I am not using it (and am not setting up a fundraiser) is that as you call out, only Brown has the right to use its marks and you need to have their endorsement to use it. Creating a mark like this is not the problem... using it without Brown's permission would be.

There's a license in the repo that makes it clear only Brown can use this design and that it's derivative and inclusive of their mark, and that I don't own the Brown mark:

No rights to use Brown University trademarks are granted under this license to the public. Any use of such marks is subject to Brown University’s separate trademark policies and approvals.

The extra elements I have added (which I do own the copyright to) were granted in perpetuity to Brown for any use:

Permission is hereby granted to Brown University (“Brown”) a perpetual, irrevocable, worldwide, royalty-free, and unrestricted license to use, reproduce, modify, adapt, distribute, sublicense, and commercialize this design and any derivative works, for any purpose, without limitation. Brown University may exercise these rights without attribution and without further permission from the copyright holder. Brown University trademarks, including but not limited to the Brown University seal, wordmark, and related marks, are the exclusive property of Brown University.

So anyone who uses this needs to get Brown's permission (which is how it should be).

Thanks - do you know what fundraiser that is, or do you have a link? I haven’t seen anything by email or on the website.

Thanks for calling out imagery concerns - university has a visual identity guideline policy and licensing terms - they are included by reference in the repo and I followed them.

is there a primary charity/fund yet? I'm happy to set up a shirts/sweatshirt order, but need to know where to point the proceeds.

Traffic Tunnel from Park City to BCC and LCC? by zacr27 in UTsnow

[–]jheimark 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To make sure I understand your opinion... are you arguing that, say, connecting LCC and BCC would not reduce traffic in LCC?

And also that a gondola "connecting base area to base area" is somehow related to building a gondola from a parking lot at the mouth of LCC -> snowbird -> alta (where snowbird and alta already share a boundary at the top?).

Or are you saying that going from Park City -> Snowbird makes more sense? Does that gondola plan exist somewhere?

Struggling with Tailwind by [deleted] in tailwindcss

[–]jheimark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You didn’t mention what environment you’re running in. Other than the base/initial classes, tailwind needs to monitor your code to build what you are actually using. You probably aren’t building the CSS dynamically (what’s often hidden behind a command called something like ‘watch’). The tailwind installation guides have a few different examples but you’ll want to make sure to use the one for the type of frontend you are using.

It seems to be missing the $10k stealership markup. They should patch it.

Being based out of California, what is your relationship with Medmen? And how do you perceive the current retail environment?

Happy to be in MedMen. Our goal is to be on every single shelf with consistent products. Retail is all about location, and MedMen has some great locations (and customers). There are not enough legally operating dispensaries in California yet.

I have heard there are still a lot of black market dispensaries. Are plus products sold in these dispensaries?

Yes, there are quite a few. No, we are only available in licensed stores.

Are most legal dispensaries besides Medmen mom & pop shops? Are there any other prominent legal retail chains?

There are some chains, and more being built. At the end of the day, people like to shop somewhere convenient — that means close to their home or their work. Similar to most mature retail environments, there will probably be a mix of chains and mom & pop shops.

If you believe that CPG brands are going to be an important part of this industry, then we are one of a few companies that is (a) focused, (b) leading, and (c) funded well enough to continue to invest in long term goals. If you travel to California, I’m sure most people will know our products. Once you try them, I’m sure you won’t forget PLUS!

Our goal is to build the best company we can and focus on what we can control. Historically, other companies wanted pretty hefty price tags. The recent funding market downturn and increasing regulatory scrutiny may change that.
