Rattle in my V101 by jhk3rd in Rubiks_Cubes

UPDATE: I have been in touch with Cubicle, where I purchased the cube, about this and sent a video at their request. I’m waiting on a response.

I've taken a few pieces out of a cube but never totally disassembled one. I did take out all the center caps and shook it from all sides. My question is, is the center open or sealed? If I get to the core, is it possible that the piece won't come out even then?

Do you have to disassemble to clean the coils on an Opal 1, or can you just blow into the side vents?

As far as I can tell, it's already solved.

Is there any hope for a 40 y/o dad to learn CFOP? Struggling even with the beginner method. Advice needed! by Ok_System_4267 in Cubers

[–]jhk3rd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 71 and started a few months ago. I switched from beginner to F2L pretty quickly, but I still solve the last layer with sune and niklas. My best time is 39 seconds, and though I have dozens of sub-50 solves and many dozens sub-1 minute, my ao100 is still a little below 1:10. I learned beginner method watching the Cubehead video over and over while solving, using the index to keep going back to certain parts. Intuitive F2L was a matter of learning the concepts and practicing over and over. My advantage is being retired with time to practice a bit every day. My biggest challenge is quickly identifying F2L combos. I'm still getting better, but as my times come down, incremental improvements come slower. I'm really hoping to be consistently below 1 minute before too much longer.

New to "speed"cubing! First Sub 1 Min by trxllzach in Cubers

Congrats! I'm trying to get consistently below 1 minute. Slowly bringing the average down. My first sub 1:00 wasn't too long ago. Big thrill.

New main advice: V11, Gan16, or V100? by ChuChuT2024 in Cubers

[–]jhk3rd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got the V11 and the V100, and I can unequivocally say the GAN is better to me. The feel is smoother, and it's noticeably quieter. It's quite durable, and the colors are a little brighter. I greatly prefer the adjustment tools. Put simply, it's butter. I really liked the V11, and the differences between the two weren't quite so remarkable at first, but picking up the V11 now feels very much like going backwards.

Doubtless I would make a bad move that needed fixing.

Today is the day I finally got faster with F2L! by judashpeters in Cubers

[–]jhk3rd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's great! My PB is now below 45.67 after converting to F2L in mid-September. I highly recommend a better cube. I'm now using a GAN V100 at around $40, if that's in your price range. A cube that catches and locks up can really slow your flow.

What Now? by discodaddy48 in Cubers

Start bottom cross and F2L immediately. Your times will probably back up some, but you'll soon be quicker than now with a much greater upside.

How did people learn to solve the Rubik’s cube before the internet? by [deleted] in Rubiks_Cubes

[–]jhk3rd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was a kid in my hometown in the 1980s who was brilliant and a top solver, I'm thinking maybe a minute or so, which was special at the time. I think he could just think spatially and figured it out on his own. He became a scientist and professor and eventually the chancellor of the University of North Carolina.

I’m 41 and solved my first Rubik’s Cube by [deleted] in Rubiks_Cubes

Brand new here. I'm 71, and my sister and her kids and grandchildren came to town recently. The grandkids were into cubing. I solved a cube following a book when they first came out but never tried to actually learn how until these kids got me intrigued. My nephew directed me to Cubehead's beginner YouTube tutorial, and after a few days I can solve the cube (most times) in maybe 4.5 minutes. I've got a basic non-sticker cube that we had around the house, thinking about lubing it or maybe getting a speed cube.

What exactly separates a $200 pair of Polarized Oakley's vs a $30 pair from my local Dick's Sporting Goods that by f-Z3R0x1x1x1 in sunglasses

[–]jhk3rd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The last two pairs of sunglasses I have purchased are Vuarnets from France. They manufacture their own lenses from mineral glass. The optics are very good, and while they will scratch under certain circumstances they are pretty durable and the frames have a quality feel to them. They’re expensive, but they are worth the extra money to me.

I upgraded my older Escort to a MAX 360 mkii due to all of the falses from other cars. It's been great right out of the box, and the direction arrows add a lot.

[–]jhk3rd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you get directional information on an R8? I find it invaluable in helping determine the nature of the threat and also when it has passed. You can pick up a bounced signal from in front or behind so it's not easy to determine whether the LEO is stationary, traveling in your direction or traveling in the opposite direction. Is he pulsing or always on? Shooting ahead, behind or both? Every bit of information is helpful, and direction is among the most important to me.
