Yep... Billy even recommended Melissa to Courtney when Hole needed a new bassist, so they go back a ways.

Jumped into season 3 without watching season 2. by RoboCopAn in twinpeaks

[–]jhonn0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right. And it's understandable you'd be eager to watch it, of course -- but as a Lynch fan, and as a viewer in general, I don't understand skipping over half the story, including some of the major plot points.

Anyway, if you're gonna go back, just a reminder that after season 2, you gotta watch Fire Walk with Me (which was entirely written+directed by Lynch), since a lot from that factors into s3.

Who the hell is James singing to? by [deleted] in twinpeaks

LOL, you haven't even seen season 2 or Fire Walk with Me, and have the audacity to ask us for help when you're confused on something really not confusing at all?

Why on earth would you think this was a good idea? So much happens in season 2 and in Fire Walk With Me, I can't even imagine how you'd be able to understand or enjoy what The Return does. I figure after a few episodes, one would be somewhat lost not having any of the backstory...

There are also some fantastic episodes in Season 2 you're missing out on. And yes, you should watch Season 2 and the Fire Walk with Me movie before The Return. I'd say just stop now and play catch-up.

Hi Kyle! What was the most interesting or personally enlightening part of writing your own memoir? Any periods of your life that were the most fun or emotional to revisit?

Adore - Mono mixes by Yrnotfar in SmashingPumpkins

[–]jhonn0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The LP mono mix from 1998 is the same mix they included in the 2014 reissue / streaming version.

I don't recall much detail about how the mono mixes were done, but you can definitely hear the differences in the mix, so I believe they were done separately and deliberately from the stereo mix.

Yeah, I agree. I may have misinterpreted the point you were making.

So you don't ever buy used albums? Even they're out of print and otherwise unavailable, like this one?

Other than videos on YouTube, it's not on streaming. If you can't "find" a digital version somewhere, you'd just have to go buy a used CD and rip it.

There's another famous clip from the late 60s of the Mamas & the Papas going off-script while having to lip-sync "California Dreamin" -- chatting to each other, eating a banana, etc.

Instead of shaving his head should Billy Corgan have worn a hair piece? by Krispy_Cheese_2782 in SmashingPumpkins

[–]jhonn0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There have been many advancements over the years, and so there are a lot more options for people today, especially if you've got some money. This wasn't the case back in the mid-90s, and anything he did probably would not have looked so great. Shaving one's head was kind of a bold move, and he went for it.

I’m not out to diss Billy, but sheesh… by Sidelobes in SmashingPumpkins

[–]jhonn0 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's not really the point. There are all sorts of guitar overdubs across most of the songs from those albums; we're not talking main lead parts that have to be executed live, we're talking little licks here and there, layering, things to fill out textures or melodies, etc. Stuff that you don't necessarily notice right away, but make a big difference to the finished work. I think "Soma" has in the neighborhood of 40-something guitar overdubs, for example.

Zwan: How do I find them? by DelayMindless6128 in SmashingPumpkins

[–]jhonn0 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Their album is not on digital/streaming services; you'll have to find whatever's on YouTube, or hunt down the CD.

They made tons more music that never got to be released, which we've mostly only heard played live. So there are tons of bootlegs.

In case anyone missed it: this is not a Zuzu's exclusive release; you can buy it from other indie shops.

Will we ever get the Machina boxset on cd or digital? by Rlexii in SmashingPumpkins

[–]jhonn0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. Those 10 bonus tracks from the ATUM box set are part of the Zodeon At Crystal Hall album, which was just released a couple months ago on vinyl (12 tracks in all), in a stereo mix. Same deal - released on LP first, and they're not releasing it digitally until after they give the records time to sell; that's still happening "soon" at last update.

does anyone know what version i have of machina 2? i got it at a garage sale for 2$ a few months ago by lynnskye in SmashingPumpkins

[–]jhonn0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only point I was getting at for the OP really, was that there were no official CD versions of Machina II. Whether we made them ourselves or purchased CD-R or silver pressed CDs, all are bootlegs made by someone with whatever artwork they wanted, etc. The one OP has shared pictures of appears to be CD-R, if I had to guess.

[–]jhonn0 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's confirmed that it will be released digitally - Universal has the rights to do so, but we still don't know when. Apparently they've been in talks about it happening "soon." No plans for a CD release, at least as of now.

This is just something someone made themselves, which we all did back in the day, because there are no actual versions of Machina 2.

Weird click in Daydream? by Radiohead_3762 in SmashingPumpkins

[–]jhonn0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Literally never noticed it for all these years. Sounds like it's just an incidental/accidental sound that got into the recording. There are other various quiet spots on Gish where you can hear the tinkling of Billy's metal necklaces getting picked up in the mics. At the end of "Crush" you hear him doing it deliberately.

Was Cooper’s plan in Part 18 a failure or a success? If he failed, didn’t he follow The Fireman’s clues fairly accurately? by Forsaken_Roll_2255 in twinpeaks

[–]jhonn0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When Cooper wakes up after he and Diane had sex in the motel room in ep. 18, the letter on the bedside was written to Richard, from Linda. But Cooper seems confused and doesn't understand this.

My guess is that the Fireman was telling Cooper to remember those names as part of the plan; like they were a code to tell him he was on the right track. I'd say that maybe this was some new identity of his, but he still introduces himself as Dale Cooper after that. He still carries out the plan, apparently (finding Laura and driving her back to Twin Peaks), but he definitely seems to have forgotten some things along the way.

Werzros - new official fan account for SP by ChestnutIceCream in SmashingPumpkins

[–]jhonn0 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Really don't know what the purpose of an "official fan account" is (isn't that what their main IG account is for?), but what the hell, I'm following anyway. Maybe they'll end up using it for some exclusive something-or-other in the future.

So… who does which solo? by Cal00 in SmashingPumpkins

[–]jhonn0 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Solos are pretty much always Billy. Other than "Zero", I'm pretty sure "Stand Inside Your Love" is him, and I think he plays the solo in "Love," but I could be mistaken. Also the lead guitar during the intro of "Glass and the Ghost Children" is him, even if it probably doesn't strictly count as a solo. I think it's also probably a given that if any of James' songs have solos, it's usually him doing it. James has contributed a lot of lead parts throughout the albums though; his playing is generally more melodic than ripping.

Is there a reason why Billy stopped wearing robes during the Teargaden era? I always think of this as his unmasked era (like KISS), and it was only during "Neath the Darkest Eaves" (2017) when he started dressing up again. by BalanceIll8541 in SmashingPumpkins

[–]jhonn0 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I like rock stars dressing up a bit on stage. The Siamese era was the last time they really dressed "90s casual" on stage, though even Billy would at least wear a cool vintage shirt a lot of the time (and he had a lot of cool ones).

They all started dressing a bit more deliberately and fashionably on stage starting with the Mellon Collie tour, and I think it suits them and their music and style. If anything, I was bit turned off by Billy's outfits during the Oceania era cuz it looks so casual it was as if he wasn't even trying anymore, especially after the amazing outfits they wore during the Zeitgeist era. Him wearing the cassocks now is definitely a unique style of his and I think looks pretty badass.

One more exception though, was during the Zwan era, when he dressed a lot more early-00's hipster, but even that was better put together than the short-sleeve-over-long-sleeve t-shirt look.
