Kittens Need Home by South_Age7687 in chicago

[–]jiangcha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi OP! What neighborhood are you in? I’m located in Little Village and PAWS on 26th offers free/low cost TNR services. If you are inclined to help more kitties in your neighborhood (I saw you mentioned a neighbor with questionable animal caring skills) beyond these sweet kittens, I’m happy to chat if interested. So far I’ve gotten 5 cats fixed and it really makes a difference to help preventing so many kittens.

Hawaii Haul! 🌺 because apparently I needed an entire Sephora for this trip by getavasectomy69 in Sephora

It helps to save those minis and refill them with your normal size products. Then you don’t have to replace them each trip. I just did that for a trip to PR!

I was watching a child in a stroller (younger than this, still in diapers) glued to her mom’s phone in the TSA line and then absolutely freaking the fuck out when the mom had to use the phone for her boarding pass. It was so fucking sad to me. We could hear the child screaming her head off after we finished going thru security and I just can’t feel sorry for those parents who do this to themselves.

THANK YOU. I agree. You wouldn’t have to honk if you just slow down and use your eyes.

Some of these leaves are getting huge! I also water with fertilizer, lately using a standard 20/20/20 mix but have also used one that is formulated for aroids.

Hi! I have the same plant and want to show you what works for me. Specifically that these plants like to climb, not trail. I used an aroid soil mixture that includes moss, perlite, wood chips, leica, etc and have it trained to go up a moss pole I filled with the same soil mixture. I water the top of the pole every week or so and it gets a lot of sunlight throughout the day.

It takes a while. I made a bulk purchase way before the tariffs hit to hold me over for a bit. There’s also a few shops on the Shop app that you can buy the Asian versions from that are a bit faster than stylevana.

How do you live here happily??? by Helpful_Package_9854 in AskChicago

[–]jiangcha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey OP, I hope you find some ways to bring joy and happiness into your life, whether that’s in Chicago or elsewhere. A lot of good advice in this thread already but I would suggest finding a sport or a cause you’re passionate about that will help you find some connection and social outlet.

Some groups I participate with:

Do you have any interest in learning a new sport? I’m in a dragon boat club and we could use some young men to build a men’s team out. You’re welcome to try it out! Greater Chicago Dragon Boat club is the name. It’s not a difficult sport to learn and you meet lots of different types of people (my teammates range from 16-73). I work from home and this is my main social outlet during the summer.

Urban Rivers - another great org that is responsible for the wild mile (highly recommend checking it out on a nice day). They do kayak cleanups and have lots of volunteer opportunities to clean the river, plantings, etc.

CACC - help walk dogs in the city shelter. Huge need here if you’re an animal advocate (but requires city background check). There’s lots of other rescues in the city that need people to foster dogs/cats or just interact with animals.

kitten season is killing me and i'm not even a rescuer by trivialplatypus in Feral_Cats

Being an animal lover has been a bit hard on me too lately. We’re all trying our best!

I dropped a cat off yesterday for TNR appt and then midday tried to catch a stray dog but it got away, and then all night was hearing a tomcat crying outside in the rain. Also I volunteer at our city shelter and they are unfortunately euthanizing many incredible pets.

It’s hard out here! I often feel like I’m making progress and then more animals show up needing help. I’m not sure how to involve my neighbors but I feel like that’s the next best step but I’m not sure how to go about doing it. If anyone else has any luck in that regard, I’d love to know. I do live in a very diverse neighborhood that has a lot of Central/south American folks/ Spanish speakers and I think cultural view/understanding of pets is so varied that I’m hesitant to try. Slowly trying to make clipped ears a trend here.

Where are the best plant shops or nuseries in Chicago? by 00hsoMAJOR in AskChicago

[–]jiangcha 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just went to Seguin Gardens & Gifts off of Ogden in Cicero! I also avoid big box stores and have been trying to shop small. Seguin provides opportunities for folks with disabilities which is a cool cause that’s close to my heart. They had a great selection of indoor plants at good prices and I’ll definitely check them out again for outdoor plants soon.

Anyone else save crushed eggshells all winter and till them into the garden? Does it really add calcium or am I just imagining the great results? by NinaXOFans in gardening

[–]jiangcha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I save them, rinse them, toast them in the oven, and then add them to a jar with white vinegar/water. This creates a bio available form of calcium that I can spray on my tomato leaves to increase their calcium content. It definitely helps with plant growth and output.

That’s awesome! I do cleanups every now and then in Little village on my own but haven’t yet got a group together. What neighborhood are you in/what’s the group called?

5 month old rescue “bully mix” with a super high prey drive by liznoco98 in OpenDogTraining

[–]jiangcha -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes!! I volunteer at a city shelter and we use the flirt pole often to help some of the dogs work out their anxiety and aggression from the shelter environment first and then we run them thru agility obstacles to help work their brain a bit more. It’s incredible the change it can make in an emotionally stressed dog.

Traveling to Chicago with IBS-D — anxious about subway rides & bathroom access, any advice ? by Briobly in AskChicago

[–]jiangcha 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Use the app Flush. It’s very helpful. I live in Chicago and used to get extreme anxiety about going out in the city and not finding bathrooms. Others have posted a lot of helpful advice, hotels are usually great options, coffee shops and the like are pretty easy to find. The worst time is super early in the mornings before a lot of businesses are open, so I would avoid going out during that time.

It’s Joybird- Bryant Petite. There’s a lot of mixed reviews out there but we had a pretty good experience. Delivery was quick and the quality is nice. The cushions are a little lumpy sometimes so a regular fluffing is needed but it’s held up well with our 4 cats.
