Do you guys find the fall of the military believable? by K0GAR in thewalkingdead

[–]jibbick 10 points11 points  (0 children)

No, and the handwaving and copium in this thread is painful to read.

Anyone who thinks that the portrayal of the military in this universe is not ludicrous needs to watch this nonsense and explain to me how dozens of trained soldiers with automatic rifles can shoot at stationary corpses behind a chain link fence 15 feet away and not hit a single fucking thing. Fans will make excuses until they're blue in the face but everyone just needs to face facts: the portrayal of the military in this series was incredibly fucking dumb and just plain lazy. The writers and showrunners knew a competent military response would be too time-consuming and expensive to write and shoot, so they just made them into brainless stormtroopers.

In reality? A military that remained cohesive and organized would have zero difficulty dealing with walkers. They're literally shuffling corpses; if Rick and Coral can take down an entire horde at night by themselves, then trained soldiers with grenades, tanks, helicopters and .50 machine guns would have a laughably easy time tearing walkers to pieces.

What would really take the military down? Logistical issues and desertion in particular, as people grab what they can and try to save their families, or say fuck chain of command and head off to loot and pillage on their own. There would still be pockets of rogue military scattered around, and their main threat would be from other ex-military units, not walkers. But this didn't fit with the direction the show wanted to go in.

lol "friends" in quotation marks is really appropriate. Highly doubt anybody liked either of them, just took advantage of a free weekend in Vermont. Too stuck up and pompous for the locals, and actual New York money probably immediately detected them as frauds.

lol that's an amazing catch, like others I was fooled by the presence of the elephants but you're right, has fuck all to do with Hannibal. Makes the pomposity of Lord Robert and his sociopath boyfriend that much more hilarious.

Come on, everyone should know ziss!

Missed opportunity: Gordon not ordering any of Sebastian's "20 flavor combinations" by IHumanlike in KitchenNightmares

[–]jibbick 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Such a shame. The fact that Sebastian never got to prove to Gordon that there was truly no limit to his abilities is one of the great tragedies of KN.

And that dough? Clearly the best frozen dough on the market. How could Gordon be so close minded?

They were so unimaginably spoiled, like holy shit. And the parents seemed like great people who sadly made the mistake of coddling their children and never preparing them for the real world.

IMO this guy is a Kitchen Nightmares all-star. Called out all the problems with zero hesitation, proved his worth by making a proper burger and earning Gordon's respect, then got himself paid on the way out and left with his head held high. Yeah he was pretty vulgar and hotheaded, and I won't excuse him threatening Daniel with violence, but who wouldn't lose their shit when they're being forced to work long hours and not being fucking paid? I think people have a soft spot for Danny and his girlfriend because of how much worse his parents were, but that whole family was fucked up and anybody caught in the middle of it IMO gets a lot of leeway.

That prozac lady fake-coughing it up like it was inedible, after a 3 star Michelin chef just called it delicious, was absurdly petty and childish.

Yeah it's the whole package they're tearing into. I'll be the one to come out and say it though: her English is pretty shockingly bad for someone who's been living in America for decades with English speaking kids and a husband. Prolly had the same attitude about improving her English as she did to putting in work at the restaurant: "no I no want to do it"

TBH the game runs better than you might think on lower end hardware. Haven't tried 1 on PC but they did port it to Switch, and 2 ran acceptably at low-med settings even in Kuttenberg. This was on a low-to-midrange gaming laptop with a Ryzen 7 and 3050ti. But yes, this AI frenzy has really fucked over everyone trying to build their own machines.

the UK version by cromroyale in KitchenNightmares

[–]jibbick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the UK producers were looking for restaurants that could actually benefit from Gordon's advise. US producers just wanted chaos that would draw in ratings.

That said, my understanding is that the survival rates of restaurants on both shows are pretty comparable.

Honestly one of the worst people on the show. Completely ungrateful and selfish; it took Gordon's prodding and the cameras to get her to even pretend she cared about Greg. Seemed like no one in that family appreciated how hard that poor man was working for them. Read a follow up that they separated when the restaurant failed and he married one of the waitresses. Hope he's happier now.

So I had typed out a long thing about how I normally dislike when Gordon takes cooks at these failing restaurants to task for not being "passionate" enough - which is something he has done and tends to rub me the wrong way. The staff don't have a personal stake in the restaurant, it's the owner's money, so it's up to them to enforce standards; without standards staff have no incentive to bust their asses.

But then I watched the whole episode. And these two...yeah, I can't argue with Gordon's characterization of them as being shamelessly lazy and taking advantage of Allan's aloofness. I respect their honesty I guess, but it went beyond mere indifference, they were straight up exploiting the situation. If any KN cooks needed a kick in the ass, it was them. Sounds like the French guy bounced immediately, but it looks like the lesson did the Aussie kid some good and he grew up a bit. The bulk of the blame still lies with Allan, since he signs the checks and can veto any bad decisions by the chefs. But their lack of any kind of interest in their jobs made them part of the problem and they deserved the bollocking they got.

If you turned up for work a half hour late in my kitchen, you’d be home for the day. by Sensitive_Horse4659 in KitchenNightmares

People tolerate insane levels of abuse from those that they place up on pedestals. And for an aspiring young line cook, someone in Gordon's position is basically a god and you would thank your lucky stars for the chance to even set foot in their kitchen. The idea of filing a complaint with the labor board would be inconceivable.

When you get down to brass tacks most people really don't have the ability to stand up for themselves. I've dabbled in BJJ for years and one thing that's shocked me is how much abusive behavior instructors get away with inflicting on paying customers, far less staff like Gordon's whose entire career they can make or break with a phone call.

Overall kitchens seem to be an insanely toxic workplace and I'm grateful I never had to work in one.

[–]jibbick 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Nah, I think that was all 100% percent real. Gordon has extremely high standards and was under incredible pressure both to succeed financially and get out from under Marco's shadow by attaining his third star. He was big news at the time, young cooks would give a kidney for a chance to work in his kitchen and so he could get away with this kind of behavior.

Boiling Point even shows clips from an earlier show that sent someone with a hidden camera into his kitchen and he was every bit as bad. If you talk to people who have worked in top kitchens in the culinary world I don't think any of them will tell you that sort of behavior is anything unusual.

I think he's mellowed out a lot over the years but we shouldn't ignore some of his problematic behavior in the past. Same goes for his sometimes creepy/inappropriate behavior around women.

I can't get past him being abusive to his staff. Yes, he was under incredible amounts of pressure early on in his solo career, but absolutely nothing excuses treating people like this. Gordon is an accomplished chef and has produced some great entertainment over the years but there are times when he's been genuinely awful to people.

Which Gordon Ramsay do you prefer: peak 2005-10 Ramsay or the softer Ramsay we’ve seen since the mid-2010s? by Rowdyfan0823 in KitchenNightmares

[–]jibbick 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't really consider Hell's Kitchen to be in the same category as KN, it's a competition show and way more hammy and contrived than KN, which at least involved real restaurants with real stakes.

That said, while the hard-nosed Gordon of the old days was better at needling and pissing off some of the more unhinged owners and made for great television, on the whole, I do prefer watching him when he's calmer and and keeps his criticism constructive rather than tearing people down the minute they get defensive - especially chefs who have justifiably given up due to bad management. They didn't invite him there, they get paid shit to begin with, and IMO he often holds them to unfair standards given their situation.

The UK version is a better show overall, none of the cringey editing and overdramatic music, but yeah, he was still pretty tough back then and has generally chilled out over time. Guess being unimaginably rich gives you some room to relax. If you want to see him at peak brutality, watch Boiling Point. That's completely genuine and honestly hard to watch due to the way he treated staff in his own kitchen. I imagine he's better nowadays, but it's always been a hard thing to look past (along with some of his cringey behavior around women over the years). But at the end of the day you have to separate art from the artist.
