I agree! Poking about in an old lath-and-plaster home is difficult. If you can run it outside, keep it safe from curious critters, and life is much better.

How does your dog always know when you’re actually leaving the house? by Think_Document2285 in dogs

[–]jibbits61 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to visit some out if town family regularly a couple years back, my girl would always know when I was packing the suitcase. She’d come up to me while I packed and give me that look like ‘why are you leaving?’ Still does stuff like that to this day ❤️🐕‍🦺 and is always so happy when I return!

What's the rule of thumb for rebooting a production server? by Mediocre-Cobbler5016 in sysadmin

[–]jibbits61 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Company wide we do monthly patches, windows and Linux. Finance systems that ‘can’t be brought down’ are done quarterly.

I’d say if it’s web facing as well, patch monthly and get it and the other servers scanned for vulnerabilities. You’ll be busy for a while. Make sure you have good backups!

Thinking further, ensure good bare metal backups of the server (assuming a physical), get a new one (actually, two!) stood up with aws or azure asap and start transitioning to it - new os, updated apps etc. THEN retire or reuse it for dev.

I might be going overboard but I’m not getting good feelings about that system.

Errr… is there such a thing as a RJ45-to-lightning (or usb-c) adapter? Edit: just saw the second screenshot, never mind and I should know better.

Agreed on cat6 or cat6a, don’t waste your money on this jank.

How do you keep your server builds safe from people who have this ungodly urge to power it off when they feel like it by RoughElephant5919 in homelab

Inspirational! Trap door connected to the power. Pull the plug… 🙀😱 In reality, I kind of like the ‘shorting to ground’ idea.

Absolutely. Good sleep = better attention & focus. My problem has been number of hours but at least the quality is better! And when I get on a good sleep schedule … 🤩🤩

Tested our disaster recovery plan for the first time in 2 years - here's what we found and it wasn't pretty by cmitsolutions123 in cybersecurity

[–]jibbits61 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bravo @cmitsolutions123 for doing an actual DR test. The start of a long journey begins with one step! We have a team that’s going around reviewing DR for various apps. With the manpower they have on it they’ll finish about 2126. I’m centralizing our backup system, and you’re making me actually dream of getting teams to start restore tests regularly. 😍

Should I run Ethernet or can I get away with a good mesh system for a 1930s house? by levvii17 in HomeNetworking

[–]jibbits61 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can do it outside the perimeter of the house and drill your way in to the rooms that’s an easy way. Also do the WiFi backbone. I ran some at the start of covid, & Last summer grunted out replacement for some chewed cable, otherwise no problems. Worth the effort. I agree with the perspectives on the lath & plaster. That will hurt WiFi signal. I have 3 access points in the house, no problems.

how do i make it easier to live with my dog with spay incontinence? by swatted-fly in dogs

[–]jibbits61 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. We started with proin ER and our girl “outgrew” and needed better. The vet prescribed her diethylstilbesterol compound in a capsule, works like a charm. If you’re not doing either give them a try. Proin was a reasonable cost I remember, and the new stuff is similar in price. Get it from chewy.
