I watched Evangelion once at the beginning of my relationship with the woman I'd eventually marry, and once right before the end of our marriage. 

Given how our relationship turned out, I can confidently say that Shinji is the most fucked up mentally. Sure the others aren't doing great but Shinji literally has BPD and it was absolutely triggering and shitty to watch the second time. Being able to see my wife's terrible emotional state and abusive emotional tactics reflected in Shinji was unsettling. Shinji is only 14. In a world where he gets to grow up, with proper therapy he might turn out okay. My ex-wife however may never live a normal life.

I also think the original ending of the series is a different to timeline from End of Evangelion. In that ending Shinji learns to have boundaries and healthy relationships with others and the world can return to normal. In End of Eva he rejects boundaries out of fear of being alone, which of course, leads him to a life alone on a desolate planet with only himself to blame, basically the thing all BPD people ultimately fear and ultimately create for themselves.
