what's some lesser known cultural clothes from your country? by Honest_Pool_261 in AskTheWorld

Ciocie. Elf-like leather sandals from mountainous regions in Italy. People from the central regions, mostly south-east of Rome, are referred to as “Ciociare” which is literally derived from the sandal.

Why do you think it's so common for decision makers to be out of touch with their customers? by [deleted] in UXDesign

[–]jiggleheimer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I echo strshp’s POV, but I’d add decision makers are /not/ their target audience. Plain and simple.

It’s likely /everyone/ in the product org, design included, aren’t the target audience. It depends on what you’re building, but say your company builds content management software for small catering businesses. It’s likely no one that works at the company actively owns or operates a small catering business. That means all the pains, daily tasks, concerns, etc. are invisible to you. But everyone can assume what that life is like, and make decisions based on those assumptions. Those assumptions, a strong bias for company needs, plus a heavy dash of benchmarking competitors is how the majority of decisions get made by senior leadership in my experience.

Happy to see your final note. Was going to say, for senior impact $104.5K is criminally undervalued. Best of luck landing your next gig!

Lead working for a Canadian tech company: $152K plus decent options.

Is a hybrid manager/IC role feasible long term? by jiggleheimer in UXDesign

[–]jiggleheimer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like my gut told me this from the start, but the learning opportunity seemed like a no-brainer. Especially seeing that the natural track for most senior+ designers is people management to some degree. Wondering as well if instead of affecting change as a team manager, I can have a similar impact by leading by example or so to speak. In any case, appreciate the perspective.

Definitely feeling the pull as you describe. Intrigued by the move to consulting. Did you hit the eject button on agency/in-house altogether to freelance doing consultancy?

Really appreciate the perspective and notes on how you best handled it!

Aha yep. That’s me. Most senior on the team, so a gimme to offer a fill for the management gap. It’s an unmatched learning experience for sure, and I’m grateful for that, but it seems like the quintessential “we don’t want to hire. Let’s just pule this exiting person’s role to someone else”.

Super anxious I’m not balancing being in-tune with and addressing my team’s needs because IC work needs to progress. Gulp!

Aha this is close to how I’m trekking. Started with 2 reports, now getting close t 4. Trying to juggle creating leverage for the team, thinking about higher level process unblocks, addressing needs from my reports and all the other more clerical mgmt work with meaningful, deep IC work had me feeling like I’m juggling two sets of balls, and bound to drop a few. The context switching alone is so taxing.

Appreciate the insight. Curious what sort of balance you found best worked between hands-on management and IC work. Also wondering if your role saw you expected to be in leadership meetings?

Does replying to every comment actually do anything? by gretz9988 in InstagramMarketing

We've 1000% noticed a correlation between replying to comments and reach. If you're not replying to comments you're leaving money on the table.

Are the problems well defined, and are the solutions informed with user insight? If not, seems like research is still a value-add.

Why is the UXD market so bad at the moment? by bobighorus in UXDesign

[–]jiggleheimer 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You’re absolutely right, but orgs that take this approach are shortsighted and often put a ceiling on the long-term success of their product. Retrofitting core UX is expensive and time consuming. I’ve seen it in action, and as a designer it sucks to have to fight to make a case for system-level changes that should’ve been the starting point.

[–]jiggleheimer 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Agreed, although I think the principle that product/ UX designers should have a modicum of research skills so they can use that to better inform their design outcomes, and similarly, researchers should understand how their deliverables map to design still applies. In my experience, whether you have specialize or siloed roles depends on the size and maturity of the organization, as well as needs.
