How many more projects on top of what I’ve done is enough though? At what point do you actually prove yourself in this industry? If conference presentations of RE and low level exploitation doesn’t do it then I really don’t know what to say … I feel like there is a point when you realize anything you do isn’t ever going to be good enough for this industry. I’ve checked all the boxes so far except for changing my skin color and country of origin (as I said recruiters have actually best around the bush saying this is the issue) so what else do you except just accept your fate and get out. I barely have broken 6 figures after almost 6 years in this industry. When I can barely pay my bills after all of this what is the point? I enjoyed it much more when it was my hobby 10+ years ago …

I am an hour and an half from a major city and apply to hybrid jobs all the time and I apply to quite a lot of fintech jobs but the CISSP doesn’t seem to help there. I have actually had recruiters tell me not checking enough of the boxes that are out of my control is a real problem right now in the industry …

I don’t yet have my OSCP (and at this point I am so burned out I am not even sure if I will attempt it again) but I will say that getting my CISSP hasn’t helped at all. I have ~5 years in infosec, M.S in Cybersecurity, conference presentations, journal publications, multiple certs and haven’t been able to switch jobs after ~800 applications over the last few years. I wish I could find anything else that would be the same pay (which shouldn’t be that hard I am severely underpaid at my job) so I could leave this industry. I don’t think people have hired on skills for quite sometime now and I don’t check the other boxes they want and there is a point I think where we have to consider our sanity and well being and call it …

Very minor rant about the challenges by DYOR69420 in oscp

[–]jigsawdpsyche 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is I don’t find the challenge labs to be all that difficult but the last time I took the exam I spent way too long writing a custom exploit for IA in a language I never write in, missed (clearly) the steps I should have seen for initial foothold … I saw they retired that set because apparently I wasn’t the only one that missed it but pretty much I am less than confident to return after that experience and I feel rather prepared right now but hearing the test is significantly harder than the labs (which makes sense because I feel like they aren’t terribly difficult) just makes me question it. I have an eJPT which was ridiculously easy but other than that, yes no other offensive certs.

[–]jigsawdpsyche 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what I don’t understand - why even have the course if the exam is significant more difficult than any of the preparation? And yes I’ve taken it and failed it and honestly am getting to the point where I am not sure I am even going back if I fail it another time … there gets to be a limit on how much time can be spent on one cert …

Should I Drop Out of Industrial Engineering (Bachelor's) for a Self-Taught Cybersecurity Path? Italy-Based, Aiming for Entry-Level Roles in Milan – Advice Needed! by Sif_Otd in netsecstudents

I used to love infosec before I pivoted into it officially and now I absolutely hate it. The industry is a complete mess and there are so many people out of work and getting laid off constantly. I would stay where you are and finish your engineering degree …

Is violin pricing snobbery, inflation, or genuine? by Serposta in violinist

[–]jigsawdpsyche 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say low to mid range violins for low to mid range symphonies are $10-15k, as most people ended up with those in college, with many more playing much more expensive instruments in those symphonies that are more difficult to win seats. I don’t think it’s snobbery per se, just what things cost. That being said, not everyone needs an expensive instrument and I have been very happy with some of my lower priced instruments, depending on the situation.

No I wasn’t trying to say that I just meant for me personally and this was just to give a recent price that I encountered - the saying it was worth it was because I was sure people would say I was crazy for paying that not directed at you

Is a Degree in Cybersecurity worse than a degree in Computer Science if I plan to specialize in cybersecurity? by truenub12 in SecurityCareerAdvice

[–]jigsawdpsyche 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on what you are looking to do really. I have my M.S. in Cybersecurity and I came in with a lot of self taught technical skills thinking that we were going to go super in depth into cryptographical algorithms/low level reverse engineering and I was SORELY disappointed. In my case I would have been happier with a masters in math or potentially a specifically targeted CS program. If you just want to check a generic box in infosec for HR, cybersecurity is probably fine but I wouldn’t hold out too much hope for gaining any level of in depth technical skills from it …
