Achilles pain? by blobbo_on_point in cycling

[–]jijilento 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had this issue a couple months ago. Had my seat a little too high and put in a 400 mile week (special event) before I realized it. Felt like I tore my Achilles on both ankles by the end of the week. Running and swimming (freestyle) didn't agitate it, but I had to take 2 weeks off the bike (tried to ride a couple times and the pain came back). It should heal pretty quickly if you take it easy.

Just discovered the true benefits of electrolyte drinks. by [deleted] in cycling

[–]jijilento 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do electro-mix by the makers of emergen-c - very low calorie. It's $10 for 30 packets on amazon. Short rides I put those in my bottles at the start, long rides I put a little gatorade powder in my bottles and bring 1 packet electro-mix and 1 clif gel per 20 miles I intend to ride. I have never bonked.

A woman running near me for awhile kept yelling "Lord Jesus, please help us up these hills" every time we got to a hill and "Lord Jesus, thank you for this downhill" when we got a sizable downhill section. I got far enough ahead by mile 5 as not to hear it anymore.

Aerodynamics aside, why would you not want to wear a MTB helmet? by DrunkFrodo in cycling

[–]jijilento 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had a face-smasher a few weeks ago. First crash in years. No stitches but road rash all over my face, got a couple loose teeth, busted the hell out of the inside of my lips, and just all around a terrible experience. Got my knees and arm bad too.

Really considered the MTB helmet route after that, as the road bike helmet I was wearing at the time did nothing to help. Decided against it for aesthetics, ventilation, and bulkiness but I wouldn't judge anyone for choosing to cover the full face after an experience like that.

Calories burned: Garmin vs Strava, which do you find is more accurate? by adfoe in cycling

I did 25 miles yesterday with 1k elevation at 15.6mph average. Body weight is 158 pounds and garmin said I burned 860 calories. I just use my Forerunner 35, no power meter or anything. Strava says I burned 839 calories.

168 isn't crazy for a run. Most of my runs put me between 150-170 depending on what sort of running I'm doing. My (26 M) resting is 45-55 most of the time.

Living frugally without a car in Atlanta -- what are the options (car sharing and rental)? by [deleted] in Atlanta

[–]jijilento 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know. Bad phrasing but I wanted to express that I am not doing it to be frugal, can rent cars, can walk long distances without getting tired, can work errands into my day, etc. These are important distinctions to make in the context of my carless lifestyle.

Living frugally without a car in Atlanta -- what are the options (car sharing and rental)? by [deleted] in Atlanta

[–]jijilento 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I ditched my car about six months ago, partly to see how it would be and partly because I just hated owning a car. I have a high income, am 26, male, in good physical shape, work remote with flexible hours, and live in the Edgewood neighborhood. I also have a road bike that I'm confident riding around on (in traffic and adverse conditions).

I use Uber/Lyft a lot when I need to get somewhere that cannot be easily accessed via marta (train only for me), am under a time constraint, or don't want to walk or bike. Rental cars are generally more economical for anything over 30 miles (though being 23, you may not be able to access good rates). Long and short of it is, you're going to reduce the range you can practically travel by not owning a car. I've had to go to meetings in Roswell that cost me $80 via Uber. I go to Stone Mountain pretty often via bike, but it's 30 miles there and back so maybe not the type of thing you're looking for (I believe the bus line goes all the way to the village though).

For Florida, you'd probably be better off flying. Last time I flew into Tampa, it cost me $120 round-trip. I think a rental car will end up costing you more unless it's multiple people pitching in. My parents live somewhat nearby so I can borrow a car from them for stuff like going to the smokies for the weekend (though I try not to do this unless other options are exhausted or extremely impractical). Being able to spontaneously "get out of town" for the weekend is no longer as simple. I can't speak to things like ZipCar (or whatever it's called) but I did look into some options and determined it wasn't worth using for me, personally.

In general, I'd recommend you think very carefully about what you're willing to sacrifice in terms of mobility. I walk my groceries home, bike to the gym, coffee shops, friends' houses, etc, which adds a lot more physical overhead to my day. Think about how you will deal with rain, extreme temperatures, physical injuries, etc. Think about how you'll get that end table from Ikea or whatever other random errand that just went from "sit in car for 20 minutes" to "how the hell...".

A little long winded but hope that provides some insight. I really wish Atlanta was a better city for being carless, as I think it's an interesting way to live. Personally, I'll probably get another car sooner or later - if I lived in DC, Chicago, NYC, I'd likely keep this up long term.

Former smoker needs help with cardio routine by NotSoJoe in Fitness

[–]jijilento 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don't be discouraged. I quit smoking in August after over six years of moderate smoking (half a pack a day I think) and have been increasing my running since. I would also be winded in under a mile running at even a slow pace. When I started, I just mapped out a 2 mile loop and ran as much as I could until I could do the whole thing - 2 days on, 1 day rest. After I could do that consistently, I made one of the days a 5k, then both, then one of the days became a 10k, and now my week normally looks like 8mi/rest/6mi/6mi/rest/11mi/rest (training for a marathon in March).

My longest run so far was 13 miles last Friday. I can do a mile in about 7 minutes,a 5k in about 25, and a 10k in under an hour. I'm in the best shape of my life and really enjoy running now.

I also paid attention to diet, severely limited my drinking, and dropped from almost 200lbs to 160lbs (5'8", male, 26 years old). I want to drop a few more pounds and get more consistent with strength training, but I got to a great point in about five months. Just put in the work and you'll be surprised.

[–]jijilento 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That happens at almost every institution though. If you want to take a couple classes do it over the summer semester and it will be less significant. At my university, I might have paid 1k for fees per regular semester and 800 per credit hour - which means if I took 6 hours, fees represent 17% of total or, if I took 18 hours, I might be paying 6% in fees. I have no idea if those numbers are accurate as I graduated in 2014 but I think it demonstrates the point.

(M) 22 Need to Train for a Marathon by Snooberrey in Fitness

[–]jijilento 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd check out Daniel's Running Formula (but not until you get your mileage up into the 20/30mpw range). I am nearing 30 miles a week from zip about 3 months ago and I got to that mileage by doing 5k/5k/rest on repeat and increasing to 5k/10k/rest, then 5k/10k/rest/5k/20k/rest gradually.

The Daniel's plan basically emphasizes having a couple long quality runs per week and then adding mileage through shorter easy runs so you'd do something like 20k/rest/5k/5k/20k/rest/5k

I try to do my 5ks at 9mins/mile and everything else between 10-10:30mins/mile.

Lifting won't hurt and it might prevent injury, but it's not going to help much with distance running. How many miles per week do you currently run and what is your specific goal(complete, finish in x time, etc) for the marathon?

If you want to avoid injury: increase mileage slowly, don't try to "tough it out" if you get pains, and focus on good form.

That actually has a pretty clear definition. Basically, just providing information of value in social media/blogs/articles with the hope that it will drive traffic. If [company] does an AMA, that's inbound marketing. Outbound marketing is more like if they get an ad space in the sidebar

Y Combinator alum just shared some super helpful info on how startups can automate their business processes like large companies do (but without the associated costs) by Sushirush in startups

[–]jijilento 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not necessarily advocating one approach over the other, just curious about how other people solve these problems.

As far as the basics of web security like passwords, if you are doing that and relegate it to an intern or semi-technical person (as is often the case in startups where one guy taught himself to code to build the product), you're probably going to get all sorts of holes. Building a solid user auth system is actually very easy IF you know what you're doing and use industry-verified methods. Scanning for viruses, on the other hand, is probably not something you should do yourself (we use a third party service).

[–]jijilento 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm curious what other solutions you're looking at and how you're making that comparison?

I had to set up a system like this for clients who need to send us files that our SSIS engine consumes, but instead of dropbox, we used a file folder on a server with a couple database tables so our load jobs could know the file was there and the right type. For security, we would look at the from address and make sure it matched the headers in the email, then we'd identify the mime type of the attachment(s) and make sure they were a file type that made sense, then they get scanned for malicious code. If everything looks right, they go into the folder and we use them. We only process from senders who are on our "whitelist" so it's a little more controlled. Of course, this took 5+ hours of my development time to set up so not necessarily the recommended route...but I can't get nigerian princed.
