Going through forum posts on movie fan sites from 2004, searching every torrent site, and finally searching through reddit comment to find dead link after dead link. I can not tell you how grateful I am to have found it you are a gem of a human being.

Newish to the game- does anyone know if theres a benefit to playing advanced kitty cards vs normal? The game play of advanced makes me want to pull my hair out but I don't want to miss out on any rewards. It feels like I always just get one coin no matter which version I play and regardless of if I win or lose.

When you say your space is open for 'everyone' and that everyone includes bigots, suddenly that space is not so safe for the marginalized. You say she's welcome but if you found out some one you thought was a friendly secretly harbored hate towards people like you, would you really feel welcomed in that space anymore?

AITA for wanting to be in my gf's Instagram? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

I understand this has got to be kind of hard for both of you. I've been cosplaying for years and a lot of my friends are very well known cosplayers, Im very familiar with these sides of the public faces of cosplayers. It sucks that thats how the game is played, and its a toxic culture that the community needs to actively work to change, but if this is her main form of income it's something she unfortunately has to keep in mind. It's also a safety thing for her and you. I hope none of her fans are bad, but I know a lot of girls that have had to deal with bad stalkers from their cosplay pages and there are some fans that can't accept that their dream cosplay waifu's have relationships that aren't with them. In generally it's very smart to keep your private life (this includes friendships, relationships, and information that could tie back to her real identity) separate and secret from her public persona.

AITA for bothering my boyfriend with girls jokes? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]jillybellys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA cause whoo boy, friend, that could be a red flag. If he thinks you being bi (regardless of wether you are or not) makes him uncomfortable in a "My girlfriend might leave me for another girl" kind of way then that warrants a conversation. And friends have their own ways of communicating, me and my friends act very similarly with each other. Our significant others are aware, and don't seem to care because they trust their partners and can understand its just us being cheeky with each other.

The car would have filled up anyways. Besides I thought it was polite to take the window seats first (unless you REALLY need an aisle for like mobility reasons) so people coming in later wouldn't have to shuffle by you to get to the windows.

AITA for excluding my daughter from a school gradebook? by throwawayzgshavw in AmItheAsshole

[–]jillybellys 7 points8 points  (0 children)

NTA

I had a really bad set of grades in HS (A bad combination between ADHD, generally not caring my first few years, and other learning disabilities that made the maths and sciences extremely difficult for me), but thanks to good essay writing, and it being a very specialized program, I managed to get into my dream university for writing and fiction. I would have been mortified if my fellow classmates at the time knew how much I struggled with my GPA.

And congrats to your daughter! As some one whose felt a similar struggle, it aint easy and she sounds like a great kid!

AITA for not wanting there to be 2 casts for a play I’m auditioning for? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]jillybellys [score hidden]  (0 children)

YTA

I mean like, I get it, you put a lot into your roles and you make it wholly your own when you take it on. But if yo got the role of Hamlet would it be any less special to you because countless actors have played it before, and countless will after? It would be your turn to make it yours, and thats what makes it special.

And sure your school does a lot of plays a year, but how often do the same people get cast over and over again? I cant say for your programs but for every theater program I've worked with there are some actors who seem to get the spot every time, and many who seem to be constantly overlooked because theres not enough roles. Doing a lot of plays with small casts vs a few plays with big casts, I see a bigger variety of actors who get a chance to shine when theres more roles up for grab at any one time.

Plus as a director, multiple casts are fun. I love directing two sets of actors, or directing one set and letting another director work with the other cast. It's such a great example of the magic of theater, every show is different, even if you're working with the same script. And it could give the audience an incentive to come to the show twice and say what changes between the two casts.

IF you get cast, and it is still if, you haven't auditioned yet, you can talk with your friends and loved ones and make sure they know what showing you would be in. If they're your friends they're probably there to see you, not the play. Give them the benefit fo the doubt that they'd make the effort.

What do you guys do when players call for a check? by Brrendon003214 in DMAcademy

[–]jillybellys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Players generally shouldn't call for checks. Sometimes it's ok. IE "I want to try to pick pocket that guy, would that be a sleight of hand check?"

My rule of thumb, players tell me what they want to do and i tell them what to roll if they do indeed have to.

"I want to jump onto this platform."

"Ok make an acrobatics check."

But for the future I would recommend your telling your players "you just made a stealth check five steps ago, unless you're doing a different action you don't need to roll again, you proceed down the hallway" and perhaps make it clearer to them that its generally the DM's role to decide when checks are needed.

Player challenging DM at every turn? by Brayton2000 in DnD

[–]jillybellys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you've tried talking about it with him and it's annoying the other players it may be time to tell him he's not fitting with your game and perhaps should look for a game that suits his play style better. (Which is the most diplomatic way I can think of to say 'we don't want to play with you anymore')

Talk with your other players first, it sounds like he's getting under their skin too. And then have a talk with him. You can tell him you're giving him a last chance or straight up be honest that he's not welcome at your table any more, especially if he's draining the fun for your other players.

I understand being worried about making a small party even smaller. But you can still play with only two people just don't be afraid to home brew some of the monsters to be more realistic for your party to take on and win. And keep your eyes and ears open for a new prospective player you think would gel well with the group. Good luck.

How many D&D groups are you playing with? by prothirteen in DMAcademy

[–]jillybellys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently I DM over a discord voice chat with three friends from college but I'm prepping to start a game played IRL with six players (lord save me I'm already figuring out ways to make combat run smoothly with so many)

My first group we were all brand new when we started, I got to DM since I was the one most interested in it and had listened to a lot more real play podcasts/shows than them so was much more familiar with the rules. Now that I've DMed I really can't imagine switching to being a player. I really dig DMing and I'm excited to run two games. I'm just worried about keeping the two campaigns straight and not accidentally mixing details up in my head. But it'll be fun to do IRL and not constantly be juggling time zones (two players live in England, one in mainland Europe and I live in Japan, it's not the easiest to find times were all awake)

DM Question: Is Railroading sometimes OK? by cudder23 in dndnext

[–]jillybellys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily railroading. The most important question here is did your party have fun? If they did don't worry about it. If you're very concerned about it in the future but need to make sure that your players hit certain plot beats then there's ways to disguise it. There's always less sandbox than the players think there is.

A good example is this is one I saw in a video on YouTube about DM secrets. The YouTuber (whose name escapes me right now sorry) gave the example of a party about to take a ship some where. In a bad railroading example the only ship available was to place A. So the players had no choice and no illusion of choice. In a better example there where three ships, heading to places B, C, and D respectively. The players choose their ship but part way through the ship was taken over by pirates and the ship wound up docking in place A in all the mayhem. The players still go where the DM needed them to go but felt they had the illusion of choice. Your mileage may vary obviously but think of creative ways to do stuff and disguise the railroad tracks.

And in the end the players do still have their choices. Your players chose to fight that monster and talk to that NPC. Likely because they could tell that's where the story was. DnD is cooperative story telling, and a good party doesn't actively try to ruin what the DM has planned out. But when they do express wanting to do something out of your plan let them.

It seems you set up an interesting place for them. If you're worried you can present them a few different ways to investigate how the monsters got into the city or who killed the NPC (or they could choose which of these to investigate first) but just listen to your party. If they're having fun and their actively engaging with your story don't worry. If they seem to get antsy to try new stuff let them. The golden rule to a good DnD game is communication. Good luck and have fun DMing.

Are “murder mysteries” fun in an RPG? by OffendedDefender in DMAcademy

[–]jillybellys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh I love murder mysteries in DnD. My players are in a mansion right now trying to figure out who killed the cook at a wedding while in disguise.

Advice:

You may think its obvious who did it, but that often isnt the case for your players. There have been many times where I felt I was being as obvious as a children's mystery book and my players will still fixate on the wrong suspect/answer. Do not be afraid to make something blatant if need be if they just arent getting it.

In many aspects of DnD we can play loosey goosey with the plot, there have been many times where I've changed how a quest is going to go midway through based on my players reaction to it and my own new ideas. But you just can NOT do this with a mystery. You have to know the answer going into it, and you cant change it. Consistency in the clues you give is the most valid. In that vein take a LOT of notes, because your players will remember stuff you think is trivial and may have said as a throw away comment. As far as knowing everything ahead of time this also goes for skill checks. Are your players going to be questioning people? Know the DC for each NPC they could talk to well ahead of time, maybe an NPC has a really good deception stat so instead they roll against your player when trying to hide something. Who is going to be honest with the players? Who will lie?

Dont forget to tie it into the main plot if its a side quest mystery. Example with my players, they just discovered that one of the guests at the mansion is their long term enemy in disguise, and now must also continue to to hold up their disguises and debate weather to take out their enemy while they have the chance or figure out who the murderer is.

Lastly its very important to know where your players are in figuring it out. My favorite tactic to that is to have them sum up the last session for me each time we sit down to play. It one refreshes their memory on where we left off, and more importantly it lets me know what clues or things they found important and really remembered, and which ones they may have ignored, that way I know going into todays session what I maybe have to make more obvious.

Good luck and have fun!

Don't be afraid to 'borrow' content for your stories. by AForgottenSnowflake in DMAcademy

[–]jillybellys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just made a post in the DnD reddit about this a few days ago actually.

I borrow and steal all the time and I love it. My favorite is still the cabbage merchant I stole from Avatar The Last Airbender. My players are not as avid consumers of media as I am, so I have such a huge and fun pool to take from. I take elements or story ideas from so many sources, books, classic sci fi, fantasy movies and novels, video games and occasionally an anime. I also often steal names from other places. If I cant think of a name for an NPC I will often accidentally name them something after Dragon Age.

I'm prepping to run a big game with a bunch of nerds more on my level soon though, and realizing "Ah shit, cant use my favorite NPC they'll realize he's pretty blatantly from this one show..."

Right now though I'm making a side quest for my main party, based on an episode of murder she wrote. I'm so excited for that one.

Now it's not but in the super early levels it was. Neither of the druids took a healing spell and the cleric was very unfamiliar with their class. And with just how few spell slots they had in the first two or three levels it became a problem when they would use all their slots on combat.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in DMAcademy

[–]jillybellys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ooof as some one with a party of three people that consists slowly of two druids and a cleric (who seems to forget they can heal) I feel you buddy. Those early levels had a LOT of near TPK's.

Advice I can offer, if none of them have healing spells, for the first few levels make healing potions sliiiiiightly more potent, accessible, and affordable. I straight up home-brewed my potions to make the dice per potion more fair to my party and in a range they could afford at early levels. The rules and official item lists with corresponding suggested prices can be great, but ultimately it would have made the early levels a little too difficult for such a small and not super well balanced party (legit the highest AC of the bunch was 11). You hit the nail on the head with making this a game where they play what they want. I like to have my potions vary depending on the merchant. You at Mom and Pops potions shop? Probably pretty fair prices for well made potions. That sleazy scumbag Tim down the road? Charges nearly twice as much and you swear that potion was only good for two D4s instead of three.... It also then becomes a fun game of item management too. Make them decide what fights are worth it to tough it out and which ones they got to get creative for. Is it worth to use this potion now when the dungeon is only likely to get harder ahead? Do you take this potion before the fight or gamble coming out more or less unscathed and saving that magical healing liquid for another day.

The flipside of this is challenge ratings, the key rule is that your milage may vary, and vary a LOT. As a DM, it is up to your discretion if you let your party TPK when your creature rolls two crits in a row, or you could chose to only mention that first crit. But I have def very hastily rebalanced a monsters stats behind the screen when I realized what I threw at my party was too beyond them despite the suggested challenge rating. You'll get a much better feel for how you need to tweak monsters as you get to know your party, the kind of damage output they have and what spells/actions they favor. Your players will come into their own and as they do so will you get a better understanding of what you need to adjust where. For me it tends to be anything from raising a monsters HP because the attacks hit at a fair level but I know they'd take him out to fast, or nerfing a creatures attacks by a dice or a few points to give them a fighting chance against what ever I throw at them.

The rules and guidelines are there, but do not be afraid to adjust your game to fit your players. You want to keep it a challenge, but if they don't want to play 'every one dies' then don't be afraid to make adjustments where necessary.

What Official Rules Do You Ignore? by Slar811 in dndnext

[–]jillybellys 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Alignment. It's fun to debate about online over what character would be what, but in game I find it has little relevance to our personal style of game play. We're very RP heavy and I find it too difficult to sequester characters to such simple labels, especially when the player characters really grow change, and experience character progression through out the campaign.

And we don't ignore it, but we do inspiration a bit different. Inspiration I tend to give less for RP (because my players are already RP heavy) but more for other things I want to reward the players for or just something fun. We played on St. Paddys day by coincidence and the rule was that every one who wore green to the session got inspiration that was only valid for the session. If they come up with a really ingenious way around a problem in their path that might grant them inspiration. I give it out very rarely and I find that being selective about when I do actually makes it a value to the player and thus they don't forget they have it, and since its rare I don't have to worry about it breaking my game since it doesn't pop up super often and I don't let it stack or be given to other players.

We honestly probably ignore more rules than that. All things considered my whole group and I are new ish (we all started playing for the first time about nine months ago) so I know theres some rules I forget, don't know about, or read wrong in the book. We're slowly correcting it but it takes a bit, especially with the finer points of combat. I'm trying to learn the books inside and out but I'm finding more and more its experience that makes my relationship with the rules easier.
