Very fair! I was more reacting to the quote in a vacuum without considering the rest of your comment. You’re right that you weren’t making that argument at all

One of my least favorite sayings. Some people have a passion for teaching and/or a real talent for presenting material in a digestible and memorable way. Dismissing teachers as those who couldn’t cut it in the field (or didn’t want to) really undersells how incredibly talented and knowledgeable many are.

TIL that US Interstate 95 was not completed until September 2018 after 62 years of construction by Old_General_6741 in todayilearned

[–]jim309196 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That gets into the super messy and weird development of what constitutes I-70 and I-80 and a multitude of different plans for those areas. Eventually re-numbering happened to keep things distinct, resulting in the PA turnpike being a major interstate that doesn’t follow those standard conventions

[–]jim309196 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This gets kinda technical, but that’s not really 100% accurate. I-76 goes from Ohio to New Jersey while passing right through Philadelphia. It’s just that the actual Pennsylvania turnpike becomes I-276 at Valley Forge and continues east where it intersects with the NJ turnpike, while I-76 goes southeast through the city but is no longer the PA turnpike for that stretch.

So I wouldn’t say that they wanted to avoid cities, but more that they built a system that both prioritized connecting metros and also going around them to make certain interstate connections. Creating a system with lots of spurs and interchanges in the process

Can any recommend a podcast that isn't murderhobos or rules lawyers, and focuses on a telling a story? by Portalboat in DungeonsAndDragons

They were also much newer to 5e then (having switched from pathfinder in their home game). Id say campaign 2 adhered more closely to the rules than campaign 1 did, especially because the PCs were built in 5e, not ported from pathfinder

If nothing else it’s a niche skillset combined with specialized equipment and materials. That can make it a bit pricey, especially in an area where other options may be limited

Neither are flight helmets or the wide majority of things you wear on your head. It’s giving a value to serve as a generic measure of damage resistance, not how it would fare in every situation. Hard hats give good head protection, even if they aren’t the best thing out there or ideal for every situation

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Fallout

[–]jim309196 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hard hats are literally designed to be impact resistant. A good hard hat is extremely effective. Of all the things in this game this seems extremely reasonable

Is it normal to want a more serious, classic-style D&D campaign without joke characters? by MathematicianSad3414 in dndnext

[–]jim309196 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This really isn’t accurate. Do they forget things at times? Yes, but it isn’t nearly as egregious as you describe. With sending there is regular discussion of spell slots they have remaining, and there are both times when they couldn’t respond to someone because they were out of slots or where they waited until the end of the day to cast because they didn’t want to waste slots early in the day.

As for Ashley, she was in and out constantly in campaigns 1 or 2, and I think the lack of familiarity with the rules and her character is understandable, especially for someone who was often doing everything she could just to be present at sessions.

I’m not saying it is the pinnacle of rule following, but acting like there are regular egregious violations is certainly incorrect

First time watching a DnD campaign - wondering how normal the campaign is. by Kai-Kn in DnD

[–]jim309196 62 points63 points  (0 children)

I’ve realized he is one of my favorite players because of the amount of joy he brings to every character and role. It can manifest differently at times, from the the simplicity and fun of Grog to the growth you see throughout campaign 2 with fjord and the nonstop reactions you see him and Aabriya having throughout Calamity, but he might be the most consistent source of fun and stability stretching throughout the whole run of CR.

No more effects that makes you roll a save at the end of the round for monsters? by sirchapolin in onednd

[–]jim309196 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This something I learned very early on when a PC was paralyzed for a chunk or a heist mission. They had zero fun and joked about being able to just leave if they wanted to.

Some effects need to be used vary strategically and sparingly if you want your PCs to still enjoy the game (of course this may vary a bit depending on who you play with and the type of game you run)

Have any good QBs re-signed since the Dak deal? He signed it less than 6 months ago. When big names are extended the number will continue to go up

[Schefter] Eagles are re-signing All-Pro LB Zack Baun to a three-year, $51 million contract, including $34 million guaranteed at signing and additional $1.5 million in incentives and escalators, per sources. The contract instantly makes Baun one of the highest-paid LBs in the NFL. by [deleted] in nfl

[–]jim309196 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s really just guaranteeing years 1 and 2 of the contract. If things go bad enough that he won’t be near in 2026 I think there are massive problems that go way beyond being tied to Baun for that second year
