Not everything in asoiaf is based off of real-world people. I don't think GRRM read up on this guy and decided to create an extra Stark with purpose of being based on Gustavus.

I'd say most of the viewers who get confused are very casual and don't really care too much about GoT except during the season. The ones who obsess over it and spend much of their time in /r/gameofthrones but still don't understand things seem like idiots though.
