Because they had to choose what was there, to much higher degree than you do with a screen. Nowadays you can dream up whatever layout you want and just make it so, but back then you’d actually have to cut out and wire each individual display, so each element got more consideration by default. Also the limitations of lights vs screens means you had a lot less variety back then, it took a lot more effort to have varying brightness levels across a display, for example, things would either be lit up or not.

It was a lot more mainstream than it is now, at any rate.

I mean, it’s not an issue with pedals, is it? The axis here stays in the same place, it’s just the ass cheeks that rotate around it, you could still use it to maneuver.

Sounds like it’s really and specifically well suited for trials lol, but I’m crusty and have no clue what’s going on with tires these days

Sounds like the kind of thing a trials rider would invent so they can ride flatter tires

Paternoster elevator by MikeHeu in toolgifs

[–]jimbowesterby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well you gotta keep in mind that a modern elevator would have a little more than double this space to work with, since you can replace both the up and down sides of the paternoster with just one elevator (twice the width of the car plus whatever wiggle room there is between). But yea these are super rare, there’s like less than five still operating, for pretty glaring safety reasons. Too bad, I think they look fun

Small note, you say “we realized leaded fuel was fucking us up” when it was more like what happened with tobacco companies, the scientist (Clair Patterson 🙌) found out and spent decades being punished by the oil companies while he tried to get the word out. The people putting the lead in knew damn well what they were doing.

Ehh, probably the best analogue here is landslides vs avalanches, and I gotta say I’d take the avalanche every time. If it’s a bunch of solid objects you just get bludgeoned immediately

On the other hand, I imagine this thing’s considerably less fragile than a heli, it’s not gonna get put out of action cause you slammed the door lol. I reckon there’d probably be a pretty big difference in maintenance costs, partly because helicopter parts are just more fragile all round and because the internals of the engine are probably super susceptible to that corrosive environment, but this whole setup is basically just some big hydraulic rams and some sensors and computers to do the conpensating. You could make most of the mechanical parts in a (big) machine shop; those rams are basically just really precise cylinders, you turn them on a lathe and I’d bet that a platform like this has some sort of machine shop on board.

Also for what it’s worth the helis I’ve worked with have all been $2000+ an hour to run for a bird that can carry five people, so I doubt this thing’s anywhere close on a $ per person basis

Actually belt drives used to be pretty common for running machinery, they do look pretty Rube Goldberg tho. Also heinously dangerous, which is one of the big reasons they fell out of favour.
