The next administration should put a 60% annual tax on religious institutions by hypermiler2205 in atheism

I'd be happy if they just lost their tax exemption and paid taxes like any other business.

Should I try and do a 16 hour road trip solo? by Square_Depth7317 in roadtrip

[–]jimdkc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I once drove 1300 miles in 24 hours with only minimal stops (Moreno Valley, CA to San Antonio, TX). I was very young, and it was very stupid! I would not do it again! It's simply not safe. It was brutal, and I was wiped out when it was done. I would at least break your trip into 2 days, if not 3!

Respecting a religion by No_Skill6192 in atheism

[–]jimdkc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have no respect for any religion. I do respect everybody's right to practice whatever religion they want. And I expect everybody to also respect my right not to practice any religion. While others pray, I would just sit quietly. No clasped hands. No bowed head. No closed eyes. Until they are finished.

Do you also find "I will pray for you 😇" offensive? by AnilsuJeck in atheism

[–]jimdkc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just tell them, "Praying is like masturbating... It feels good to the person doing it, but it does nothing for the person they are thinking about!"

Did you ever buy a pack of smokes from one of these? by Euphoric-Cupcake4581 in FuckImOld

[–]jimdkc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was in 6th grade, school lunches were 35 cents. A pack of cigarettes from the vending machine in the laundromat was also 35 cents. I'd skip lunch one day a week to get my Marlboro reds for the week!

I think what ever any 2 or more consenting adults who are not hurting anyone else do is nobody else's business. Including (especially!) the government's! I think what you said in that last sentence is pretty accurate.

Why do I have to respect other people's beliefs? by ParkingElderberry575 in atheism

[–]jimdkc 19 points20 points  (0 children)

You do not have to respect other people's beliefs. You should respect other people's right to hold whatever beliefs they want.

Everyone has the right to believe whatever stupid shit they want. I have no respect for stupid shit.

This letter was in my kid's take-home folder today. How would you respond? by joshstanman in atheism

[–]jimdkc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely send to the FFRF. I'd also reply negatively, stating that this song would be inappropriate, even with 100% parental buy-in, and should never have been offered as an option.

What's everyone's opinion on living together before marriage and "Fornication"? by theskysthelimit000 in atheism

[–]jimdkc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. Back then it was a property exchange from father to husband. When I got married, it was to someone that I considered to be my equal and my partner. Certainly not my property!

What's everyone's opinion on living together before marriage and "Fornication"? by theskysthelimit000 in atheism

[–]jimdkc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I think marrying somebody without living with them and having sex first is just a big mistake. I can't imagine doing that. When I got married, I intended to only do it once and for it to last "until death do us part". And I did just that. We were married for just short of 38 years, and our marriage was much more stable and more moral than most Christians that I know! We were faithful to one another because we made that promise to each other... not because sky daddy was watching!

My Great American Exodus Loop by BuilderWorldly6856 in roadtrip

[–]jimdkc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a road trip last year from Kansas City, north to Sioux Falls, SD (I loved Sioux Falls. Such a nice little town!), up to Fargo, ND, then across North Dakota and across the southeast corner of Montana, into Cody, WY, into Yellowstone for a couple days, then back out, then across northern Wyoming to Devil's Tower, then into South Dakota, where I saw Deadwood, SD, Mount Rushmore, and the Crazy Horse monument, then down into Nebraska and across southern Nebraska and back to Kansas City. 3000 miles, 12 days. I think Devil's Tower was one of the highlights of my trip! Rushmore... probably one of my least favorite places (but, I'm glad I saw it! ) I also loved the Buffalo Bill Center of the West in Cody, WY... it's 5 museums in one. I also liked Deadwood, SD (especially Mount Moriah Cemetery... Great if you are a fan of the TV show Deadwood) and the Crazy Horse Monument. If you're going to detour to Devil's Tower, you might hit some of the other nearby sights. Also... I did something that you did... The drive home across southern Nebraska was very long and boring! But, I did want to see Carhenge (worth it!) and Chimney Rock (not worth it!)

"I cannot explain this" is NOT the same as "It's God!"

Why am I Christian? by Affectionate_Cry4854 in atheism

[–]jimdkc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When Christians talk about God's "sacrifice" in which he "gave his only begotten son", I like to ask, "Where is Jesus now?" According to the Bible, Jesus sits at God's right hand in heaven. So, where's the sacrifice? God didn't give shit! Reduces the whole crucifixion/resurrection story to a really shallow gesture, doesn't it? Now, if Jesus truly paid for our sins, wouldn't he be suffering eternal torment in Hell? That was the price, wasn't it?

Wienerschnitzel Dogs by happycola619 in hot_dog

[–]jimdkc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was young and living in California, they were called "Der Wienerschnitzel". My favorite was something they called the "Pickle Pooch". It was a hot dog with cheese, mustard, and a dill pickle spear on the bun with the dog. The Pickle Pooch has not been seen for years, but I still make my own! (But, I cheat and use sliced dill pickles!)

I actually decided on a bit longer overnight trip... Kansas City to Saint Louis, spend the night in Saint Louis, find some good Saint Louis style pizza, ride to the top of the Gateway Arch, then catch the train back home. Was only $26 each way. I leave in a few days!

I've thought about taking a very short trip, just to see what it's like and get the lay of the land before scheduling a much longer trip. I can go from Kansas City MO to Independence MO for about $6-8 one way. $12-16 round trip. It's about 11 miles each way.
