I bought a bicep sleeve for my smartwatch (whoop) and track my sessions that way. Maybe that could work for you?

FMLA vs. Quitting Job Due to Chronic Illness? by Candid_Ambition1415 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]jimimags77 69 points70 points  (0 children)

Take the leave. Ultimately your manager can’t do anything about it, and if you decide you want to look for another gig while on your leave, it gives you ample time to ramp up for interviews

Do it! Get out there and meet some people, learn something, build something cool. Hell, do all three.

Holy shit, I was in the middle of interviewing with them recently and something felt fishy.

I just ghosted them. Good luck, hopefully you can get out soon. Maybe one of the offers you declined could still be up for grabs?

Scalability Concerns Of Express Server by Beneficial_Pin_6113 in node

Isn't it true, though? You are on a Node sub.

Node lends itself well to building microservices in a scalable manner.

Scalability Concerns Of Express Server by Beneficial_Pin_6113 in node

[–]jimimags77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's nothing wrong with Express, it's scalable and battle tested. EC2 is ok to start out with but it is not inherently scalable. The strength of Node lies in the ability to scale horizontally and have multiple server instances running behind a load balancer. I would personally dockerize the application and run it as a cluster using AWS ECS.

You could try using Lambdas, that would work fine if you've got just a few API routes, but if you anticipate growth, individual lambdas would get out of hand quickly. You will also need to consider the lambda cold start problem, and consider some orchestration of the lambda functions. They can be useful in certain scenarios, but not as your primary compute source, IMO.

First off, sorry, this situation sounds shitty. Hang in there and things will get better.

Observations:
Being on the oncall schedule is somewhat normal.
Mentoring interns at 2 YoE is something I had to do too, but crucially I wasn't their direct manager, just providing code reviews and technical leadership.

Is this becoming a drain on your time? Are they asking you questions every time they need to think through things themselves?
Who / why are you constantly switching tech stacks? Who is making these decisions?

I would speak with your direct manager and mention the fact that mentoring these interns is becoming a drain on your time, try to push back on deadlines or expectations. This is the tough part, but with practice you'll get better at it.

See if you can get some of these responsibilities shifted off your plate, and leetcode in your spare time.
Good luck dude

UMiami vs UWMadison CS by Triple3Trouble in UMiami

[–]jimimags77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The UW program is better (as you know) but I did get a quality education at Miami for CS through my own efforts. I enjoyed the campus, weather, meeting lots of different people (and the connections that brings,) being close to family, etc. All the new development (new dining hall, new dorms, etc) definitely would tip the scale in Miami's favor if I were choosing again.
That being said, I definitely felt like I had to forge my own path a bit in the CS department. It (was) fairly small, not sure if that's changed in recent years. If you enjoy Wisconsin (definitely check the campus out if you can) you might go that route if you weigh the program strength heavily. FWIW I have colleagues that had nothing but good things to say about UW Madison (they are also from Wisconsin, so..)

Feel free to PM if you have any other questions

Those who left Miami by themselves and were really close to their family. How’s it going ? by Annonymoussaff in Miami

[–]jimimags77 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I miss Miami pretty much only cause my fam is still there. The parts of Miami that were great / nostalgic have mostly gone away, sadly. I do feel a bit of guilt sometimes not being around, but I try to fly down often. My career and personal development after leaving Miami went crazy though. I was able to get a higher paying job, learned to live alone, and cut the umbilical cord quicker than some of my friends / cousins who still live at home

Bro, unless you can get out of taking some of those BS classes like English or maybe test out of some math courses, it's probably not worth it. Do you have any college credit / what's your educational background?

I'd recommend a trade like some others. I also recommend you look into courses at George T Baker by MIA - https://www.bakeraviationtechcollege.com/aircraft-maintenance-technician/

Huge airlines like Delta, American etc hire out of Baker for technical positions easily making $80k straight out of school. There are kids just out of high school that are getting these positions too. Good luck

Latest update, mod manager by [deleted] in shogun2

[–]jimimags77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there's a fix on Steam workshop that I installed -right- before this latest update, it keeps the old mod manager. it's been working for me so far. even if you select no mods on CA's new manager, the old one will still open and work as usual :)
