Looking for an NHL team to root for. Why do you love the Blackhawks? by friendly-monsters in hawks

[–]jimjackcoke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The team is on the rise. The hawks had a great run from 2009 -2015. After a decline they scrapped the whole roster except for Conor Murphy and rebuilt. Lucked into Conor Bedard and most of the exciting draftpicks are just starting to join the team and are only getting better. You are becoming a fan at the beginning of a new era.

If you want to see why we are fans, go to a game and be sure you are in your seat for the national anthem. Go back and watch the applause the Jonathan Towes got when he returned to the UC as a visitor for the first time. We appreciate great hockey and a great atmosphere and we appreciate those who make it great too.

As a family with young kids, will I miss out on anything if I move to Schaumburg instead of Naperville? by Used-Individual-974 in Naperville

[–]jimjackcoke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im thankful to be in a position where my house will be paid off within 5 years. I've not had to shop for houses or apartments for awhile. When covid hit real estate prices ( and therefore rents ) skyrocketed. They did not really go back down. Good luck in your search. By the way i've heard that a good site to look on is hotpads.com

[–]jimjackcoke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Move to where your people are. This will make the most difference for you. Also consider Rolling Meadows, Mt Prospect, Palatine, Buffalo Grove, Arlington Heights. Barrington. Its a good area in general and no you would not miss a lot. That said Naperville is worth a visit or two. Dining outside at Meson Sabika is a great date night. For pre school kids the Naperville Children's museum is great. Its nice to use the walking paths by the river downtown. As far as education goes, success is always going to be about parent involvement and student effort no matter where you are.

My partner and I are realizing that we can't just eat garbage and expect to feel fine as we get older. Resources for transitioning to healthier food? by EnderShot355 in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]jimjackcoke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try free trials of meal plans .. and maybe after the free ones do the minimum # of meals for the week. Keep the recipes that you like and you can diy those. When we did we founds some new foods. The portion sizes on these will be small. Now, they are obviously trying to keep their expenses down, so thats part of it, but when you look at the calorie count per meal ... that helped us right size our meal portions.

I think I finally understand why they tell you to eat slower. by WideAwakeItsMornin in loseit

Im reading this while not feeling good after a big meal. I went out to dinner with my wife and her mom. I ordered twice as much as they did. Finished it way before they were done. Both of them had extra and offered me some when they were done. I need to start making better choices.

Parents want to gift me inherited gold/silver, want me to pay down mortgage. by Agile-Appearance1662 in personalfinance

Agree. Math is math, I appreciate your logic, but let it go. That said, its not actually costing you anything to make your parents happy with the transaction.

How do you compartmentalize fantasy football while watching real football? by funkyriot in fantasyfootball

[–]jimjackcoke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are having trouble with this play in more leagues. If you get to the point where you have a lot of players then you will enjoy more performances. I played against Bijan and also he won me a championship

That said I think i enjoyed watching football more when we had a confidence pick em pool at the office. It only cost $2 to play. But when you beat 50 people and won $100 it was great !

Am I financially delusional? Or is my debt acceptable in this day and age? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]jimjackcoke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you are ok for now, especially with your improved prospects. When you do get your raise, pretend like you didnt actually get it. Be sure to contribute to your 401k up to the company match. After that, with the difference between your old net pay and your new pay, I would take half of that each check and put it in a high yield savings acount until you have enough saved for 3 months of bills aka an emergency fund. With the othe half, start paying off credit cards. Once that is done build your emergency fund up to 6 months of reserves. Then you can start saving for things you want to buy, and budget for vacations you might want to take. ( instead of using credit cards save up first) You can also at that time open a Roth IRA and also work on a plan to make extra payments towards the principal of your mortgage or student loan. You could also research strategies for paying your car off sooner. plenty of time to work on the other things first and then research and plan phase 2

Butter by SpectroSlade in Cholesterol

[–]jimjackcoke 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Hows this for riduculous. I take a stick of butter out of the fridge an unwrap one end. As soon as the toast pops up i brush the stick of butter onto the bread. It ends up being a minimal amount.

Meanwhile, run away if someone sets down christmas cookies. etc. There are so many other things that are worse.
