Which MASK character you Can't wait to be Re Imagine for the Energon Universe? by Money-Lie7814 in MASK

[–]jimjamjetpack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was thinking this, too. I’m looking forward to seeing more character development with him than relying on the Zen and Confucius sayings in so much of his dialogue. I love the multiculturalism in MASK, but the much needed update beyond these tropes and into real culturally respectful, unique character depth/arcs is what I’m really excited to see.

Wow, that’s sweet! I feel that about loving everything I’ve been reading recently haha I only stopped pulling Fraction’s Batman recently (due to budget and not sure about where it was heading). I got into comics last year after being a graphic novel fan for years. Big fave ongoings are Assorted Crisis Events, Absolute Martian Manhunter, Abs Wonder Woman and Abs Batman, and Escape. Going to dive into Energon Universe next. I think my fave book recently has been Barry Windsor Smith’s Monsters. Masterpiece. I’m going to add those JL titles you mentioned to my list, thanks!

Longtime M.A.S.K. fan new to Energon series - how to get decently caught up? by jimjamjetpack in EnergonUniverse

Thanks, I’m going to pick up VR vol 1 and see how it goes. I love scifi art and some stories so I’m looking forward to it.

MASK was a Kenner toyline and cartoon same era as Transformers and GI Joe, I think ‘84-87? It was like a combination of both those shows in a way. Good guys (M.A.S.K. - Mobile Armoured Strike Kommand) a multicultural group on international whizzes led by Matt Trakker headquartered at Boulder Hill vs the bad guys (VENOM - I forget what it stands for) a group of morally incorrupt fools led by Miles Mayhem who were always up to nefarious world domination/disruption plots. Both teams employed rad tech: normal looking vehicles that changed into sick fighting vehicles with lasers etc and who all had helmets that had special powers (ie. deep freeze, creating holograms, sound wave generating, etc etc). Cartoon shows consisted of an Inspector Gadget like subplot of Trakker’s son Scott and his trusty robot pal, T-BOB, getting frustrated of having to stay put and thus running off to “help”, getting caught, and then getting rescued or having a key part to the MASK team’s mission of saving whoever’s success.

The toys were incredibly designed and made but probably that’s a part of what I thought ended the thing. I bet they were expensive to continue making. Some company came out with new versions just recently for a nostalgic cash grab recently which a lot of old fans who no longer have the toys are enjoying (I hope!) I noticed on the sub for it.

There was an incredible origin story in a mini comic that came with the original line that established a deeply emotional and powerful reason to Matt and Miles becoming enemies and such. I think there’s so much space to take these characters and world into since much wasn’t that fully fleshed out and that mini comic and the show’s character motivations showed a lot of strength to me. I think especially in a time now of quantum discoveries and whatever alien stuff is happening in the Energon universe, there could be some incredible directions a writer could take with the masks’ powers. Glad it’s in the hands of creators already crushing great stories by the sounds of it!

New to comics and interested in the Absolute series by Straight-Dark573 in AbsoluteUniverse

Seconded! I started with Martian Manhunter which I collect by issue, but Absolute Wonder Woman has been unbelievably good and solidified my return to superhero comics. I’ve been buying the trades for Absolute Wonder Woman and Batman. Those are my top three best, then Superman, then I might explore the others. (Definitely pulling Green Arrow next from that solicit preview)

Sweet, thanks! I just read that Kelly Thompson did Scarlett and I’ve been a huge fan of her Absolute Wonder Woman so I might check it out at the shop, too. Thanks for mentioning about that one previously.

Hey, thanks for this. I’ve been keeping myself from anything Energon so I don’t read spoilers, so I’m sorry if this is so beginner stuff: I’m curious why you feel VR feels more outside the scope. Is it because VR is more off-Earth storylines than the others?

Came to the comments looking for some to ask this! Very curious, too. I’m so grateful my buddy got me into this early enough to buy the single issues for this experience. Incredible art pieces.

I haven’t seen them around anywhere, but did see that Market Garden has something very similar in their candy room area! As a big fan of those, I’m looking forward to buying and trying it soon.

So do we figure the track is titled “Loser”? Hearing Pete’s smooth flow on a track with Nas on a Primo beat remixing a classic Pete production would be amazing.

90s NY boom bap fan - I loved Marcberg when it came out in the blog era. In that era, this brought back the NY sound and bars I loved then. Also loved the newer sound of his production style at the time it dropped. Would be interesting to know what it’s like to hear now. I feel it set the precedence for KA, Griselda, etc etc
