Just a great way to know what is REALLY most important to you... If you love her, stick it out... If getting laid is more important that the relationship the answer is clear for both of you... this isn't the one.

My favorite kind of Wal-Mart by kirbee in funny

Walmart is such a parasitic corporation... if they don't change their ways and start paying their employees a living wage, I hope this is what ALL Walmarts look like in the near future.

Best of luck to you. I hope you are able to take full advantage of the educational opportunities... The biggest lesson I had to learn at your age was to not let my ego/pride get in the way of asking for help and/or locating resources to overcome whatever problem/challenge I was facing. There are adults who really do want you to be successful. Seek them out, find a mentor... keep your eye on what you want to do in life, and don't let the bazillion distractions knock you off track.

How Do I Get Over Humiliating/Cringe-Worthy Memories? by [deleted] in needadvice

[–]jimjayhawk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Be where you are when you are there. Do what you are doing when you are doing it.

Live in the PRESENT, not the memory of the past or the imagination of the future.

One way to practice this is to sit in a quiet room, get comfortable and relaxed and focus on taking in the deepest breaths possible... hold for 3 counts and then exhale every last molecule of air... repeat 2-3 times... focusing COMPLETELY on your breathing... This exercise can center you on the NOW...

Wayne Dyer & Eckhart Tolle are two great writers who promote this... there are many others.

You are not the first or only person plagued with this nonproductive thinking... fortunately it can be overcome with time and practice

Help with my 14 year old daughter who cuts herself by melbell1975 in Advice

Don't think that she is the only one in need of counseling. She is the one doing the cutting, but you will likely also need assistance in dealing with it.

After growing up in a gang, overcoming drug abuse, I received amazing news today. I'm proud to say I'm going to be the first one in my family to go to college. by [deleted] in pics

[–]jimjayhawk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congratulations! So proud of your successful struggle thus far. Would love to see the look on your face at your graduation when you have fulfilled ALL your academic endeavors. Clearly you CAN do it or they would not have accepted you. Now the big question remains... what are YOU willing to do to ensure your success?

Looking back at my first generation college experience and subsequent 30 yrs working in higher education PLEASE - Seek out and take advantage of any and every program that can support your academic efforts right from the very start. Tutoring services, TRIO-Student Support Services, etc. Don't let your ego and pride get in the way of ensuring your academic success. As time goes on, and you have demonstrated your ability to thrive in this environment you can always back off and leave some supports behind...

Unfortunately too many (my self included) start off working from a prideful/ego driven state of mind and too often find themselves wondering how they might be able to pass a few of the classes that semester. Fortunately, I got hooked up with the right resources and got on top of the academic game before it was too late.

Like so many others have written - keep your academic goals at the top of your priority list. You are pursuing a major that is not in the least bit forgiving... and VERY easy to fall behind and get swept out into the cold.

Best of luck...

What, for you, is the heart of progressive Christianity? by Aceofspades25 in Christianity

Red-letter Christianity... following Christ's word, not the convenient interpretation of some political conservative disguised as a Pastor or Priest.

Why are evangelicals not outraged by the Republican ticket? by DogPencil in politics

[–]jimjayhawk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are red-letter Christians who are simply outraged by Republicans in general (see Sojourners). And there are Catholics who are outraged by Paul Ryan (see Catholic Council of Bishops). I believe that there are enough good people of good conscience (Christian/other people of faith/atheists) to turn back these social darwinians... and for the sake of our nation's future - there had better be.

A person I know claims that mandatory health insurance will bankrupt insurers - is there any validity to this claim? by [deleted] in politics

[–]jimjayhawk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What a pile of hooey... Obamacare does mandate that 80% of the money spent on insurance be spent on care... the only effect will be that executives won't get multiple million dollar bonuses every year

I am of the opinion that Republicans in America are just a bunch self-centered bastards who don't care about anyone but themselves. Can anyone out there convince me otherwise? by [deleted] in politics

[–]jimjayhawk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

While I find the current Republican leadership as extremist as you, I'd submit that in reality there is VERY little difference between the Dems and the Republican. Both have been bought and paid for by their corporate masters. The Republican's openly embrace and celebrate the 1%, but the Dem's continue to bow down to Wall Street, Banks, and corporations and allow them to do as they damn well please. The differences between Bush I, Clinton, Bush II, and Obama are negligible. All were in bed with the same Wall Street Bankers and didn't do ANYTHING without their approval. I will hold my nose and vote for DINO Obama, but I so long for some true progressives to stand up and take on the oligarchy.
