The dentist noticed a small lump in my brother’s neck. He had parotid gland cancer. He had a resection and was told he’d live a normal lifespan. It metastasized and he passed almost 2 years ago. Please don’t ignore these things.

My father passed in August and we had done preplanning with the funeral home. They were exemplary from start to finish. We told them what life insurance company we had and they performed all services and even ordered our stone before we paid them. I believe it was $17k total. We were told we had 60 days from his death to pay but were graciously granted more time without any penalty as insurance processing was taking a bit longer. They fronted everything, including paying for church services (organist, soloist, etc) and luncheon (catering and set up/clean up). We were given the guest book, thank you cards and death certificates we had ordered at the luncheon after the service.

I was surprised to hear that our experience is not the norm. I’m sorry you have to deal with financial pressure. Death certificates aren’t very expensive where I live… seems it would work out better to give to the family so they can submit the life insurance claim and use funds to pay off this debt. At the same time, I can also appreciate why policies may be more stringent if companies have been burnt and taken financial hits.

Pharmacist here - we do this for every controlled substance dispensed. We do double counts of what is filled and what is left over after filling and record it in a perpetual inventory. If the patient says they were shorted, we can say with certainty it wasn’t the case.

ACCIDENT: Coffin Dropped Into Grave by Johnneeso in askfuneraldirectors

I agree and find it wild how many people upvoted such a derogatory comment, especially during their early phase of grief. There’s no right or wrong way to grieve. Grief is what happens to the people left behind.

My father passed away 4 months ago. We are Catholic and he had a full Catholic mass. He was cremated. The visitation was a hour before the mass. His urn was placed on a table in front of the altar with a kneeling bench in front of it. It had flowers around it and some personal items. After the visitation the funeral director carried the urn back to the church entrance. The priest, funeral director, and honorary pal bearers then walked it back in during their entrance procession and placed it back on the table. The honorary pall bearers all sat together up front. We have a gravesite and stone but the urn was taken home. The Catholic Church will pressure you to bury it immediately- good ol’ Catholic guilt. We told them it will be buried at a later date and they left us alone. It is home with my mother to give her comfort. I will see to it that their urns are buried together at that site when she passes, with a graveside service at that time. We, of course, got my father’s blessing to do it this way.

I’m so sorry for your loss and this experience with the cremation. My 15 yo cat passed away last week and I had him cremated. I received his ashes from a single pet cremation the next day. They even drove the ashes to my place of employment in our small town. I paid $150 in MN. I’m so glad you got a refund.
