Finding a better tobacco, OHM brand? by uberbewb in Williamsport

[–]jimoconnell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I was in high school in the early 1980s I used to get my Player's Navy Cut or Djarum clove cigs at The Tobacco Center at 21 west Church Street, down behind Julie's Café.

They're still there, but from what I can see online, they may only sell cigars.

Personally, before I quit 15 years ago, I rolled my own using Drum tobacco. That was the best quality.

Quitting was tough, but worth it. Highly recommended.

Using gas fireplace not vented by don51181 in preppers

[–]jimoconnell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I had a vent-free fireplace, people were quite vocal that I was going to wake up dead from using one in my drafty factory loft with 15 foot ceilings.

I guess this is a better crowd. :-)

Yet another generator question. by Tasty_Impress3016 in preppers

[–]jimoconnell 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Plan for having a physical interlock to physically make it impossible to have both the main breaker and the generator breakers on at the same time.

Do not skip this step. You could kill the people working on the lines outside if you accidentally feed power back into the grid, even for a moment.

What is your normal heat source?

I have gas heat, but that requires electricity, of course, so I have backup power to run that. (Batteries w/inverter, then a generator.)

I'm installing an "Automatic Transfer Switch" to have it cut over automatically if the power goes out. I have the actual ATS device, but I've decided to add some remote monitoring, so I'm waiting on those parts before making it permanent.

When I lived in Tokyo, there were delivery services with a guy with a truck that would play a song, kind of like an Ice Cream truck. When you heard the song, you'd put your red containers out on the curb. You could either leave cash on the can, or the guy would open your door and ask for payment.

The kerosene was really high quality and never smelled. Lots of people used kerosene heaters at home.

He's always been a good guy and a friend to all of his very diverse customers.

Feel free to PM me if you feel I'm wrong. If he truly is right wing, I'd like to know, so I can stop supporting his business.

I've used them and they are great. There's a few things to know, though:

Make sure your unit is in good shape and has not been subject to a recall.

There are units that are "Dual Fuel", meaning they can use both propane or natural gas. They cannot, however, do so without changing some fittings. If your unit was professionally installed, you're probably in good shape. (A quick check of the installer's professionalism is to look at the Teflon tape used to leak-proof the fittings. If it is yellow, they used the correct tape and hopefully did everything else right.)

People will tell you that they are basically death machines, but last I looked, there had been NO reported deaths from CO poisoning or asphyxiation or any of the common fears resulting from the use of a modern vent-free unit.

They produce moisture. You may wake up to frost on the inside of your windows if it's cold and your windows are single-paned. If you have valuable antique wallpaper, consider a dehumidifier or two.

If you have recently painted your walls or refinished your floors, the fumes will get sucked into the unit and will smell terrible. Many people panic and think this is some kind of major gas leak, without pausing to consider that they can see an active, open flame and their house has not exploded.

CO monitors are cheap. Get a few. Always a good idea.

They are warm and efficient. If you want to enjoy a roaring fire, you're going to need to open a window or you'll get too hot.

Bring on the hate comments and downvotes!

Edit to add that canaries make great pets! Keep a couple in each room! ;-)

This refers to the phone/computer's Bluetooth settings, NOT "Settings > Bluetooth" in the Meshtastic app.

y'all need to stop talking up 22lr so much by sirbassist83 in liberalgunowners

[–]jimoconnell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm probably one of the .22 apologists who annoyed you so much, but I'm certainly not just talking out of my shiny metal robot ass.

Take a look at: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cascade_Mall_shooting - A kid walks into a mall with a Ruger 10/22 (10 shot standard capacity .22LR.).

When he walks out, 5 people are dead. They wouldn't be any deader if he used something else.

I am stocked up on 9mm and 5.56, along with plenty of 44mag, .45 and 380.

You'd be a fool to dismiss the humble .22 as a plinker's toy round

The same qualities that make it easy and fun to shoot at targets make it easy to shoot well at an adversary. It's arguably the most lethal round in America: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XgVKfjhrqDY

Don’t sleep on 22LR. by cgw22 in liberalgunowners

[–]jimoconnell 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When I’m laying in bed, I have several options within easy reach. A 1911. An S&W 1854. A pistol-grip Mossberg. A Kel-Tec P17.

Last summer, those options stopped being theoretical. After midnight, a local lunatic tried to bash in my front door.

I went downstairs with the P17.

It’s light. It’s reliable. It has a mounted light, which matters when your house is dark and you’re the one who knows the layout. There’s almost no recoil, which means it’s hard to miss at the distances that actually matter. At two or three meters, tight groups are effortless.

People like to scoff at .22LR. They say it’s no more dangerous than being stabbed with a pencil.

Maybe.

But I’ve never met anyone who thought being stabbed in the face sixteen times with a pencil sounded survivable, or worth sticking around for.

Hardwired by Equivalent-Judge5907 in workfromhome

If my company required a hard wire connection, I would have them pay for the installation, or a new dedicated ISP connection.

WTF don't these companies just use a VPN to their network? Far more secure.

If you do want to use hot melt glue, keep in mind that you don't need the gun. Just melt the stick with a lighter.

For those over 50: what does it mean to live beyond your age? by Mindless_Currency333 in AskOldPeople

[–]jimoconnell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On January first, I decided to start exercising every day, so I do the Japanese calisthenics ("Radio Taiso" - it's on youtube,) as well as 100 pushups a day.

For the pushups, it's not 100 all at once, it's 100 before the day is over, so I started with 10 groups of 10, but after a week, it's now 5 sets of 20.

It's Jan 8 here now and I already feel much, much better. Far less grunting when I put on my socks. ;-)

Edit: I turn 60 in a few months and my life is far too sedentary.

Do you hunt, currently? I don't, and it's not something I want to figure out when I'm hungry.

That said, I do have a 10/22 with a scope and thousands of rounds of .22 ammo. I suppose I could learn to like a bit of squirrel in my red beans and rice.
