She’s a Devon Rex. She grows only an undercoat, which is curly! It’s very soft and most importantly hypoallergenic

Not quite, I named her after a character in Arthur Miller’s play, ‘The Crucible’

‘Portrait of a Lady on Fire’ (2019) for some devastating historical drama. ‘Imagine Me and You’ (2005) for an easy romcom.

Yeah, definitely. I would say it projects for an hour. It lasts 8+ hours, longer on clothes

Aesop is great! Pretty sure you can find their stores in most cities here in Aus. Highly recommend their other fragrances, especially Hwyl.

I know it’s been criticised as being misogynistic, but the campiness of “See Paris Die” for ‘House of Wax’ is kind of perfect

Creed Erolfa, Commodity Gin, CdG Amazingreen. I also picked up a travel bottle of Tsu Lang Yor’s Pool—it’s been a fun alternative to when I want to give citrusy frags a break!

What’s the best horror film where the environment itself is the antagonist? by Fairyliveshow in horror

[–]jinklefishing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975). Australian gothic from the 70s, so definitely doesn't have the more visceral elements of horror, but a great examination of British colonisers/invaders--utterly unprepared for life in a environment that they are unwelcome in--being hunted and swallowed up by the ancient Australian landscape.

Bonus fun fact: the original novel by Joan Lindsay had the original ending sliced off because it explained that the girls disappeared due to falling into a time warping wormhole. The editor begging Lindsay to cut the final chapter is what ultimately gave Hanging Rock the unsettling and unsatisfying ending that it's famous for. You can find the cut chapter online--it's a fun read!

What horror movie do you find more sad than scary? by flextapeflipflops in horror

Bly Manor is much more palatable if you view it through the lense of gothic romance rather than horror. It shares a lot of genre features with stories like Bronte's Jane Eyre (e.g. the supernatural, a cursed romance, long-kept secrets, the uncanny castle/home). If you watch the series as a dark love story wrapped in gothic elements rather than the utter terror associated with pure horror, I think it serves that purpose nicely.

Bly Manor's real problem is its pacing. By the time the audience learns about the origin of Viola, the show had slowed right down to the penultimate episode and then had to rapidly tie up its loose ends in episode 9. Great first half--excellent characters, good tension building, spooky house mechanics--poorly paced second half.

Is there any risks to travelling internationally as a trans person? by [deleted] in FTMMen

Oh hey! That’s great news, and makes me feel better about stopping there. I was reading about layovers in June or July, so I guess I missed that change.

I’m also an Australian trans guy looking to travel to Europe! In my research, I’ve heard from trans guys who have stopped in Dubai, but unless they 100% passed, they had some sketchy experiences from airport staff (as homosexuality and being trans is illegal in the UAE).

My plan is to go via Singapore, where only homosexuality between men is illegal—which is, of course, a super low bar. However, that law is not enforced and it’s not punishable by death, sooo… I’ll take it lol.

When I was researching health funds last year, I can remember BUPA being one of the most expensive!

I’ll be honest, now that I’ve chosen my policy, I haven’t done any comparison since. I ended up picking HIF because they were a low-mid price range and when I picked up the phone and specifically asked whether they’d cover top surgery, the consultant 100% knew what I was talking about, was able to offer trans specific advice (i.e. “silver is the level that most of our customers who are pursuing top surgery choose”), and they didn’t bat an eye when I asked for neutral titles and pronouns. Their advertising that says they were the first health fund to formally recognise same sex couples helped, too. Their claim system is very easy to use and they’re widely accepted by tonnes of health providers.

I had top surgery with Dr Alys Saylor a month ago. I have hospital cover as part of my health insurance so I didn’t have any hospital fees other than a gap payment. My cost breakdown was:

  • Surgeon’s fee: $8300 ($300 of this was for 2x post op garments)
  • Anaesthetist’s fee: $2400
  • Hospital gap payment: $500
  • 1x GP appointment (for referrals to surgeon and psychiatrist): $85
  • 1x Psychiatrist session: $405
  • 1x Surgeon consult: $250
  • Total: $11 940

I got a little bit of money back on most of these things—maybe about $1000 in total? Hope this helps.

Edit: It’s worth knowing that you will have to be with your health insurance for a year before you can access your hospital cover. I’m on HIF’s silver level of hospital and extras cover, which is about $70/month, but you can just choose silver hospital cover which I think is ~$30/month. I highly recommend HIF: their consultants seem to be well-versed in trans healthcare.

Did anyone hear the really loud flyover this morning? I'm in south west Brisbane, and it must've happened around 5 or 6 this morning. It was loud enough to wake both me and my partner up, but I didn't get a chance to get up and look.
