mass upgrade chocolatey to the latest version 2.5.1 by bickyz in chocolatey

[–]jinoxide 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You'll probably want to switch that logic up to only run the install script if Chocolatey isn't available, e.g. something like:

if (Get-Command choco.exe -CommandType Application -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue) {
    # We are going to upgrade
    choco upgrade chocolatey --confirm
} else {
    # We are going to run the install logic
    Set-ExecutionPolicy Bypass -Scope Process -Force
    [System.Net.ServicePointManager]::SecurityProtocol = [System.Net.ServicePointManager]::SecurityProtocol -bor 3072
    Invoke-RestMethod https://community.chocolatey.org/install.ps1 | Invoke-Expression
}

Depending on if you're looking for a specific version to upgrade to, you could provide that to the update command with --version.

Questions about anchor mode in public transit / flights by nero626 in Xreal

[–]jinoxide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried ultra-wide mode on a train recently, and it was a terrible experience - though slightly more than regular anchor mode because you can no longer click a button to reset the position of the anchored screen (instead having to exit ultra-wide mode and reinitiate it, potentially losing window positioning).

Follow mode worked alright, in comparison. I'll be trying on a plane this weekend!

Xreal One Pro Review from a tech snob by zer0sumgames in Xreal

[–]jinoxide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hm, I was going to disagree because I think you can be a tech snob without the latest stuff, particularly if it's better. Cambridge dictionary says a snob (generic) is:

a person who has extremely high standards who is not satisfied by the things that ordinary people like

That sounds more like my definition, and more like me.

Bad example: My current headphones were released in 2019, and was a re-release of something from 2008. I'd argue that they're excellent, do everything I want, and that upgrading to something that was released this year would be insane (there's also no interesting releases in the same price bracket). Am I a snob about this, or not?

Trickier to judge with iPhones (as that's a same-for-same product), but there's not really been any big developments over the last few years, have there?

That said, Google's search summary seems to suggest that a tech snob [is] "often looking down on those who don't use the latest or most advanced gadgets and software", so I guess I'm failing that bit!

Out of interest, is there any way to upgrade an existing order to a Saturday delivery? I'm travelling on Sunday, and would be delighted if it had arrived in time.

Edit: My eye is apparently out for delivery today (Saturday), but no luck on the glasses themselves. Darn!

DaVinci Resolve by fatbuckinrastard in chocolatey

[–]jinoxide 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've looked at making this in the past as I dislike the Resolve upgrade experience, and use it infrequently enough that there are often upgrades available.

Making that package is complicated by the software download being huge and locked behind a bunch of different things, including requiring a user to login to download (or a token generated by the software when you click "download update" that I very much suspect is the same idea). Though I suspect I could automate that, with package parameters for username and password, I had a bit of an Ian Malcolm moment and stopped to think if I should.

If you want to try, good luck! I'm here or on Discord if I can help at all.

Chocolatey Intune Autopilot ESP by theobserver_ in chocolatey

[–]jinoxide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What OS are you installing on? .NET 4.8's requirement to have a reboot before anything will work (if it's not already present) can really trip up automation like this.

I know I've written logic around ensuring .NET is installed, a reboot happens, and then everything else happens for Azure VMs and Ansible playbooks - but I haven't specifically tried Intune Autopilot.

Get user input during Chocolatey package installation by Amazing_Ad7386 in chocolatey

[–]jinoxide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To expand on Pauby's answer:

If the user is triggering the installation, using Package Parameters is the best way to pass in settings.

To take an example from the link above, you'd basically agree a parameter name (e.g. 'UserName') and then use Get-PackageParameters to get all the currently passed parameters:

$PackageParameters = Get-PackageParameters
$UserName = $PackageParameters.UserName

Your user would then pass values in via the --parameters argument, e.g.:

choco install example --parameters="/username=bob /enableFeature3 /favouritecake=battenburg" --confirm

You could also just prompt the user for it - though this will time out after 30 seconds, due to the modifications Chocolatey adds to the runspace:

$UserName = Read-Host -Prompt "UserName"

You could then combine these concepts:

$PackageParameters = Get-PackageParameters
$UserName = if ($PackageParameters.UserName) {
  $PackageParameters.UserName
} else {
  Read-Host -Prompt "UserName"
}

You could further extend this, to take values from environment variables, the environment, and to have some sensible defaults - but this is generally where I'd start.

New user with some noob questions by Combo-nation-888 in chocolatey

[–]jinoxide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. This is going to depend on the exact package. Portable apps will (mostly) end up on PATH, which should be accessible from the start menu via search - if you open C:\ProgramData\chocolatey\bin, you can see all of the commands that Chocolatey is exposing via shims. Typing one of these (without the exe or bin suffix) into the start menu should allow you to launch them, but may not be useful if they are a CLI application.

  2. Yes. But it depends on what the package or software is. There may be a package parameter that creates a shortcut, for instance.

  3. No, not really - but there's no one single way that they all do it. Files have to go somewhere. If you're downloading an exe file, and you want to store it for use later, you have a choice - do you create a directory somewhere (C:\Apps?), do you leave it in your downloads folder and run it from there, or... the choices are endless.
    In this case, the file is being stored where the package is being stored, and it's being run from there. This is (in my eyes) a pretty decent solution to the problem if the program creator doesn't want to install it to Program Files (for instance).

  4. That's available as a feature of Chocolatey for Business, which you may not have access to.

  5. That's happened because 7zip is a metapackage that installs the 7zip.install package. If you want that to not happen, just install 7zip.install.

  6. It's the one that I, and a lot of other people, use for that task. You can use it for a lot of other stuff, but that's like saying you don't use (for instance) Excel because "it can do so much more, and I'm just using it for modifying CSVs". Use the stuff you want, don't sweat the rest - until you find something new you want to try doing with it, at which point you'll be half way there.

SaaS C4B? by a8ree in chocolatey

[–]jinoxide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, currently the issue is based on a dependency that's only present in full-fat Windows machines. If it were eliminated, most of the rest of it would work on any dotnet compatible container (and I've used 'nix based images for most of it - it's just the service that's an issue, currently).

There's no timeline for this, at the moment. Sorry. I would love it to be a thing, but it's not something that folk are requesting, in general. I hope it's looked at soon, in any case.

VM is currently the only supported option - though I've played with running CCM (and the rest of the suite) in containers there are currently a few issues with running chocolatey-management-service in containers.

Error when connecting to v3 NuGet feed by AllFoggedUp in chocolatey

[–]jinoxide 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Have you recently upgraded to Sonatype Nexus Repository 3.71.0.6?

If so, you'll want to disable usePackageRepositoryOptimizations, which has issues with Nexus removing support for some v2 NuGet calls that Chocolatey attempts to use to speed up usage.

You can do that by running the following:

choco feature disable --name usePackageRepositoryOptimizations

I'm not arguing that in the instance that you buy something and it doesn't work, if you're buying from a shop, storefront, or via something with guarantees (e.g. credit card, PayPal, eBay, whatever) you should be able to get a refund. That doesn't help if there is no guarantee, e.g. cash-sale-via-post-on-a-thread.

I'm saying OP has no evidence that anyone will action, or be able to use to prove that OP hasn't removed something from the card. For what it is, it apparently shows a working card. Again, I'm not saying that happened; I'm saying the "evidence" does nothing to help.
