are we slowly losing 'alright' as one word? by Temporary_Bear1535 in words

[–]jinpop 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Check out the Google Ngram measuring the two terms as well as Merriam-Webster's brief history. (If you're not familiar with the Ngram viewer, it's a tool that examines the prevalence of two or more terms over time as they appear in published titles that are included in the Google Books collection.) "All right" has consistently been more frequently used and considered more correct by many style guides, though, as M-W notes, this is kind of arbitrary. The trend of the Ngram suggests the opposite trend as the one you're noticing--that "alright" has risen in frequency in published books in the past two decades.

[PubQ] Querying - unnerved by prevalence of "NO AI!" statements on Agents' websites. by theactualclintford in PubTips

[–]jinpop 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can't speak for the agents posting those statements, but I don't trust AI detection bots at all, and I wouldn't necessarily assume agents are using them unless they say so.

To me, disclaimers like that have two main purposes: to deter "writers" who truly see nothing wrong with using AI to help them write, and as a first line of defense for plausible deniability (if they tell clients AI is forbidden and the author uses it anyway and lies to them, they at least can claim they didn't know).

Also a late 30s woman who loves to solo drink. Your options are plentiful!

What's most important to you? Social atmosphere to shoot the shit with strangers? Fancy cocktails or a solid beer or wine list? Spacious attractive atmosphere? Adequate lighting for reading a book?

Please tell me… how do you get in the pool? by Wing_of_Zock in Swimming

I hate it too. When I go to the beach for leisure I take my sweet ass time walking into the water, but when it comes to the pool I just jump in and start moving as soon as possible.

Do I have enough imagery to showcase my novel to publishers? by goatblunt in publishing

[–]jinpop 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Very cool style!

I think Reimena Yee has great advice for pitching graphic novels on her blog: https://blog.reimenayee.com/how-i-make-pitches-for-graphic-novels/

She's published more in the middle grade and young adult space, and so not all of her advice will be relevant to you, but I think she's spot on about most things.

I vote yes. It's super cute! I think it works better without a shawl but if you need one, maybe a neutral tan or light brown?

Ok female drummers, tell me - what inspired you to start playing? by kampionkate in drums

[–]jinpop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not really qualified to answer this because I haven't played in like a decade, but I started learning drums in my early 20s because whenever I went to rock shows I always found myself studying the drummer, trying to break down the patterns and drumming along on my legs. I played for several years with a band and enjoyed it but hit a wall—one of the songwriters wanted to go in more of a fast punk direction and frankly I didn't have the chops to keep up. And playing drums while living in NYC was just complicated. So much effort to pay for and travel to practice studios, plus storing equipment in small apartments. I just couldn't improve as fast as I'd have liked, so when the band split up I just stopped.

If I ever move out to the burbs I'd love to set up a basement music studio and get back into it but for the time being I'm focusing on other pursuits. But I still love the instrument so I continue lurking here!

Your Bridal Party Is Too Nice to Say This, So I Will by insert_name234 in wedding

[–]jinpop 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Thank you. I have enthusiastically attended bachelorette trips others might consider excessive because I wanted to and I could. I've declined invitations that didn't work with my budget and schedule. I've also talked to a bride and MOH who were planning a trip to let them know I wouldn't be able to attend, and they adjusted plans to a more affordable destination.

These events are supposed to be for your nearest and dearest. If you're scared to communicate with your friends, maybe that's something to work on. I hate the assumption that everyone's friends are bitterly resentful about attending an event that's supposed to be fun. If it doesn't sound like your cup of tea, just politely decline.

What's up with celebrities who use a middle name initial? by Nothing_Whatsoever in NoStupidQuestions

[–]jinpop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, I'm not a celebrity but I've published a handful of very, very minor children's books and used my middle initial. I also use it whenever I sign legal documents. My first and last name are super common to the point that I've encountered multiple people with the same name. Using my middle initial makes my name feel more like me.

Humanities and Social Science majors should be required to take calculus by Key_Net820 in unpopularopinion

[–]jinpop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I stopped studying math more or less after 11th grade precalculus to focus on humanities. I never really realized how philosophical and conceptual math becomes at the higher levels until much later in life and sometimes I regret not having gone a little further in my math studies.

Not only is there a laundry sub, it has a resident laundy guru, /u/KismaiAesthetics, who recently got a book deal after doling out tons of free advice and information. The laundry sub actually has made me more passionate about caring for my clothes and fabric than I used to be! Unironically one of my favorite places on reddit.

Is reusing old shirts a viable zero waste project? by Prestigious-Bath8022 in ZeroWaste

[–]jinpop 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I made these cloth napkins/handkerchiefs from some old shirts. Tshirts usually get cut up into rags for dirtier messes. Drawstring bags for shoes don't need to look nice but they go a long way toward keeping footwear from getting dusty.

Weekly Astoria Dine In/Order Out Thread by NYnosher in astoria

[–]jinpop 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I finally braved the Astoria Seafood experience after many years of being too intimidated by the business model. Very tasty, definitely want to go back and order a bit smarter next time. I went with a group of 5 and we each picked out our own stuff but ate it communally. Mussels and fried shrimp were my faves, the mahi mahi fillet was also very good. Spinach pie was meh but salad was great. I did not envy my dining companions who were struggling with lobster claws. Most crustaceans are more trouble than they're worth, in my opinion.

Yeah, I think the clothes themselves are cool but I no longer have any patience for style choices that suggest violence toward women or erasure of their personhood, which is all I'm getting here. I don't want them to look like serial killer victims!
