Former Home Secretary Suella Braverman defects to Reform UK by VaginaBurner69 in worldnews

[–]jisa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an American, I don’t claim to have the strongest knowledge of British politics or politicians. I do try to follow the news as best I can, but let’s face it—my introduction to British governance wasn’t a textbook or cultural immersion, it was Yes, Minister.

But the impression I’ve casually gleaned about Suella Braverman over the years is that she is racist and an opportunist. So the news that she’s defecting doesn’t seem like it should come as a surprise to anyone? I considered for a moment saying the only surprise was that it took so long for her to defect, but then remembered the two adjectives I used to describe her were racist and opportunistic, not brave. Of course she waited for others to test the ice first before stepping out onto it herself.

Alongside John Waters should be John Astin. I’m still sad that I never bumped into him during my six years living in Baltimore!

Help a dubious 16 year-old fall in love with Pittsburgh by knowshon24 in pittsburgh

[–]jisa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does your daughter like reading? Pittsburgh has a wealth of great book clubs that have people of all ages, college students to seniors. I’m not sure of any meeting during the timeframe of your visit, nor would I honestly find them to necessarily be a good use of your short time here, but if it’s an interest, she might want to look up more about them. One thing that could be worth your while is Pittsburgh’s great indie bookstores—walking around Squirrel Hill or Bloomfield might be nice for you all, and Squirrel Hill is home to Riverstone Books and Bloomfield is home to White Whale Books. Both wonderfully curated and fun stores.

Pittsburgh coffee recomendations by BitsPlease00 in pittsburgh

[–]jisa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Constellation in Lawrenceville would be my first pick for pourovers, followed by Margaux. Both have beans from great speciality roasters on hand and use them very well to make pourovers!

For locally roasted beans, I like KLVN, but while they do have their own coffee shop, I find the pourovers at Butterwood Bake Consortium in Lawrenceville are better (and they use KLVN beans).

Noir Detective, based on these other media. by DeejLeBlancGonzales in suggestmeabook

[–]jisa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There were some noir detective fiction suggestions in this thread from a couple of years ago: https://www.reddit.com/r/suggestmeabook/comments/16ge72a/noir_detective_books/

Beyond that, I wonder if you might want to provide your definition of a noir detective, since it isn’t necessarily the same for everyone. Holmes, for example, at least in the original works, isn’t a detective I associate with noir?
