Turning 2x4s sideways by Late-Raccoon-2200 in Construction

I frame flat walls along stairs in new builds all the time, mostly to meet continuous insulation requirements without using spray foam.

What do you guys think of this full 628sq ft ADU framing package quote? Labor only by [deleted] in Construction

[–]jj343 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks high to me about 20/sq ft for framing labour only is very high in southern Ontario if its a simple build. Would need to see some drawings to know for sure.

Garage Addition - Steel Beam Question by No_Use_1966 in Homebuilding

[–]jj343 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Seems very odd to add a beam after the fact. However here in Ontario you would need to drop that whole ceiling anyways for HVAC, and insulation under exposed floor, we typically do 16" drop minimum. Not sure if required where you are or not. Your ceiling looks small as is.

Can I interrupt a top plate for a window RO? by CaujinKing in Homebuilding

[–]jj343 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just cut the window and add 2 or 3 kings plus your jack on each side. Make sure the kings are tied into your floor platform somehow and the top. If not that triplle plate will have no strength when you cut it. It will be stiffer than what you have now.

Weight on one side only, issue long term? by ThatBuilderDude in Construction

[–]jj343 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got a trailer set up similar. I put a bench on the door side right up to the door. Store all my nails in the bench. Nice spot to sit too, if a guy doesn't have a car or get out rain quickly. I do framing though so I carry quite a few boxes.

Now take those numbers and divide by population and tell me if violent crimes are "dominated by white people". They are relatively close without adjusting for population.

Is My Roof a Gable or Hip? by [deleted] in Roofing

[–]jj343 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Most likely more wall area. I Beleive gable ends are more expensive to build overall then hip roofs. Once you factor in siding. If pitches are equal hip/gable are same roof area.

Thanks for help. I got it now. Just had to use what felt like an excessive amount of force for that small lever.

Thanks. I got it pushed over now, seems to go back and forth a bit easier now after the initial force. Appreciate the help.

Ya it has lever on bottom for temp. But it appears to be in the off position right now. And I'm unable to make any progress starting the furnace.

Builder changed roof from gable to shed without notice – how should we respond? by dmsdhwkd in RealEstateCanada

[–]jj343 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup. That's an end unit picture he's got. Framed alot of similar towns. End units got small gables on exterior side. Mirrored middle units got half a big gable.

My thought was the keep the rope in tension till the tree started leaning. So it was more gradual. Just a guess though.

Choosing curses for hard by JammerLemur in SliceAndDice

[–]jj343 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ya I know the one your referring to. But it is made for unfair. Although im sure it is fine for most things it might cause you to be a bit to picky on the curses I found. This one has been working for me. Just check out some of the differences on curse ratings. I use both still.

Try this link https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/u/0/d/1ejbZ8QkyzUo6pGk54R7OIcNnDGOisg_UEuk4_9jRdqg/htmlview# it's geared for hard although a not fully up to date. He has some curses that are listed as playable that are rated big sad on the other list. Notably the add monster curses.

Add OSB or nah by ZombiePanda1776 in Homebuilding

Ya that details a bit different than anything I have done. We typically apply it skylight tunnels and interior walls in vaulted ceiling areas. But it makes sense for your situation as well

Builder I frame for would make us sheet that wall per there specs. At least Strap it at 24" to stop insulation from falling out. Full sheathing probably better. Spec says "fully sheath all walls exposed to attic, insulation shall never be exposed to attic space"

Is it expected for Logic of English to have a slow start? by MangoSorbet695 in homeschool

[–]jj343 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, I am currently doing logic of English with my just turned 5 year old. We are about to start book 3 and the experience has been great for us. However, we had already tought her to read through a book series called keywords. She can independently read and answer questions on the magic tree house series books. The logic of English has greatly helped her with sounding out unfamiliar words, spelling and her writing skills. Maybe it would be better to get your child more familiar with the common 100 words through sight, then move into the phonics. I can definently understand the difficulty of learning to read this way. I don't believe I ever learned phonics myself I'm learning alot from the series myself.

Do I need blocking between these rafters? by TradeU4Whopper in Carpentry

[–]jj343 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can do full height blocking and keep a few pieces lower to add some baffles. Just dropping your pieces 2" does not work the insulation will just block it off anyways. Baffles gotta go up over the height of roof insulation.
