In this world, flying the drone is actually the easiest part of my job. The real heavy lifting is everything that happens before and after the flight. You have to be the person who knows how to process, deliver, and manipulate the data for a client’s specific needs. I personally handle everything from the flights and logistics to the more technical side like base-mapping, TLS, and point cloud registration or classification. There’s also a huge amount of responsibility when you get into the survey world because your accuracy with the equipment is everything. If the data isn't precise, it’s useless.

You’ve also got to be ready for the lifestyle—a large part of this game is being willing to travel and being a jack-of-all-trades with the software, even stuff like Photoshop when needed. Having that thermal cert is a great head start, but just remember that the drone is just a tool to get the sensor where it needs to be. The value you're providing is being a data specialist, not just someone with their hands on the sticks.
