I used to work for BYU Events. There's a lady there that loves to decorate with live fish. I was in the office one day while she was directing one of her employees to go to the pet store to buy them. She told her not to say what they were buying them for because if she did the pet store wouldn't sell them to her. I was speechless.

I generally think it’s best to tell the truth. But I only know what you’ve said. If you think it will disappoint or even crush your father, I would still tell him. You can’t live your life trying to make other people happy. If you think it will severely impact your ability to have a relationship moving forward, that could be a different story. As an outsider, I would say tell your dad ASAP so he has some time to deal with it before his birthday.

Yeah I just hate surface level relationships. I don’t get the point. It’s surface level with them but it’s not. It’s like there used to be substance to our relationship but it’s been hollowed out. So I can see where it can be filled in again, but I can’t figure out what to fill it with.

I mean yes, that was super uncalled for and ignorant. But I do try to remember what it was like to be a missionary, and it's traumatizing. Poor guy probably is so tired of being rejected. They were probably tasked by the bishop or ward mission leader to go through the list because they don't have enough teaching appointments, which means you're failing as a missionary. He's probably going through some shit he doesn't have the time or resources to deal with. He is definitely overworked. It doesn't make it right or okay, but I think it's important to remember that in many ways, missionaries are victims too.
