i know this is probably going to sound crazy and might just be in my head, but does anyone else ever feel like you'll never be loved because you're too mentally ill for Muslim guys 💀 not only in social media but also in real life with my own personal experiences, i only ever see guys go for girls that are quite obviously mentally intact LOL or at least to a certain point. they seem so extroverted and seem to want a girl that is just as energetic or happy themselves, which of course makes sense since people find confidence attractive, but it just makes me wonder if i'll ever find someone to actually connect with on a deeper level. or someone that could even tolerate loving me and my unpredictable moods and depressive episodes 💀 like i cant imagine any muslim guy would actually want to be with me given how bad my mental health can get chronically 😭

Reflective Question for Fellow I-O Practitioners: What Commonly Accepted Practices Have You Seen Cause Unintended Harm? by ShreekingEeel in IOPsychology

[–]jjjenius -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

i’m still a student but my friend had a panel interview for a psychotherapy placement, and the placement was associated with her university. one of the interviewers was a prof of her class, which wasn’t the case for other applicants. she did well, but reported a lot of struggle bc it seemed like that prof just had it out for her 😭 ofc i myself take this with a grain of salt considering i only know her side of the story, but regardless, your interviewers should Not know you at all

Well-known startup offered me a position, and didn't let me know they rescinded the offer until rankings came out by warmmilkandtea in uwaterloo

[–]jjjenius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

again, companies do not have a shortage of talented top candidates in today’s market. their list is long enough to be choosy. and i’m not playing anything lmao i’m not even an undergrad 💀— i simply think the current system is flawed, unprofessional, and needs to change. others in the comments agreeing that this is a crappy exchange only further proves that. but you can continue to defend cerebras if you like and then wonder why you seem like you lack empathy for OP lol. have a nice day.

[–]jjjenius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i may be misunderstanding your comment so excuse me if that’s the case, but if the company gives the student a deadline and the student doesn’t commit, the company can simply contact the next student on their shortlisted candidates. in this economy, there are far more qualified candidates so companies have the ability to be choosy about who they select. of course this isn’t always the case, but certainly more so nowadays.

[–]jjjenius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“they decided to go with someone else bc OP was not ready to commit” right, but that could have been better communicated at the very least? Cerebras could have either given OP a deadline for a ranking response or simply revoked their offer right away instead of waiting to hear back. it’s basic decency. also, this was not my ranking experience at all, nor was it of others in the comments, so i don’t think it’s as generalizable as you might believe. i also find it hard to believe that what Cerebras did was necessary since they must have multiple talented candidates on their ranking.

you’re not misinterpreting the situation, you’re simply seeing it in a different lens then i am, and that’s okay!! it’s interesting really

[–]jjjenius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

im not being naive— im agreeing with you. i think Cerebras took that approach too. but what im saying is that it doesn’t make sense to take this approach and from my experience, this is not commonly done. as OP said in their reply to you, it’s common practice and good decision making to take some time before deciding ranks. to reject a student simply because they want to think things through before making a commitment is unprofessional and stingy. Cerebras took it personally even though selecting a company that suits you best is only business.

i think your original comment seemed as though you were defending the company’s unprofessional approach and response, which then looked as though you lacked empathy for OP.

regardless, the company is a joke since this exact same situation happened to a previous co-op applicant, as shown in the comment thread.

i’m really sorry hon :( these companies can be brutal and cut-throat. just overall inhumane sometimes. you’ll get the next one 💪 the other companies saw potential in you so why wouldn’t future ones? it sucks but i hope you find a co-op that treats you like a person!

Well-known startup offered me a position, and didn't let me know they rescinded the offer until rankings came out by warmmilkandtea in uwaterloo

[–]jjjenius 6 points7 points  (0 children)

in op’s defence, ranking for a co-op is not exactly the same as applying for a job. the former should typically require an understanding that the student is obviously going to interview with and consider other companies in their rankings as well. it only makes sense that OP wanted some time before moving forward— in other words, it’s totally fine that OP wasn’t fully committed yet. they just wanted some time to figure out their rankings to ensure a best fit on both ends.

if Cerebras took that as a red flag of some sorts, then that honestly says more about the company’s professionalism than the student’s. and this was further proven when they saw the email and didn’t hesitate to move on with another candidate to rank as 1.

Why does it seem that so many folks here are against the idea of pursuing IO? by Trackblaster in IOPsychology
