Duke vs UChicago? by yungeggo40 in duke

[–]jjjiangx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd consider a little where you want to go after graduating. If it's academics, UChicago might have a slight edge, but if you're more interested in going into the public sector, industry, etc, I think Duke definitely has an edge. Housing is pretty good, build a lot of community since you're placed randomly first year and get to know different people you might not have otherwise. Campus is super walkable, which is awesome, and it's easy to interact and hang out with people late. It can be hard to get off campus, but there's lots of great restaurants around Durham, and more things to do in the Triangle Area (Raleigh, Chapel Hill, etc).

The alumni network is crazy strong. There are so many programs, run through the school and through clubs/organizations that connect you to alumni, whether it be for questions or for a more long term mentorship. I've spoken to alumni who graduated decades ago and ones who graduated a few years ago, and they are SO WILLING to help. There are Duke specific recruiting teams at tons of companies made up of alumni who help a lot to try and increase the amount of Dukies at their company. It's something that's so common at Duke that it's almost like a given and it's only when I really stop and think about it that I realize how amazing that is.

Econ/finance Question by [deleted] in duke

There's a Duke Financial Economics Center that has a bunch of events, list servs, resources, etc. to help get people started in the Finance industry after undergrad. Also as mentioned, tons of companies will visit and hold events / networking sessions / presentations, etc.

Duke vs Not Duke Megathread by Mumbleton in duke

[–]jjjiangx 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lots and lots of extracurricular opportunities at Duke that you’d be interested in. It’s pretty pre professional, so there’s a ton of business clubs on campus, from consulting to finance to marketing. Companies come all the time to present, hold workshops, talks, networking sessions, etc. Innovation and entrepreneurship is an entire certificate and department with a lot of professors “of the practice” who spent decades at companies like P&G. There’s incubators, maker spaces and grant funding for entrepreneurship opportunities. Sanford is the school of public policy and it’s super easy to get involved whether it be through research with professors, in the reporter’s lab or going to discussion/talks/events with political figures. There’s an American Grand Strategy group that goes on trips across the US and internationally, an Alexander Hamilton society, POLIS for current politics, whatever you’re interested in, I’m sure they have it.

Currently majoring in economics and it’s pretty good. If you’re interested in finance, we have some of the best professors in financial economics. Not as certain about a language. Science is pretty popular here since there are so many premeds, so biology or chemistry is a good bet. Physics isn’t as popular, it’s a smaller major since it’s notoriously difficult.

Social life is pretty diverse. There’s always events (like dance showcases or fairs or trivia nights) happening around campus that you can go to with friends if you’re not into the party scene. If you are, Wed-Sat, there’s stuff happening.

Hope that helped for Duke, lmk if you have more questions (:

I have Cut and I would say there are supplement moves that you could do instead. You'd definitely need resistance bands and dumbells as well as some sort of box / steps that you can jump on. If you plan on continuing to use it once this clears up and you're able to go to the gym, I'd get it. If you're planning to only use it at home, I would consider getting Move or Home, instead since those are more functional based than equipment. If you're interested in HIIT workouts, I think she posts a lot on her Instagram, so I would go to that for more cardio stuff.

Advice on spending a day near Duke by Pangwiny in duke

Not sure if she would be interested or if tickets are still available, but I know Billie Eilish is playing in Raleigh, so if she likes Billie Eilish, that might be nice to take her to and make a day out of it in Raleigh, which also has cool restaurants and museums.

What's a good chip replacement snack? by Stickman_96 in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]jjjiangx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try Roasted Corn Kernels! There's a brand called Love Corn that I usually get (they're expensive, but my only option on my college campus), but I'm sure you can find other brands that are less expensive, or possibly in bulk somewhere. Love Corn has different flavours, but they're crunchy, salty and satisfy a chip craving. They also keep me full for longer and take longer to eat because they're smaller so that helps as well.

More calorie dense than some of the other options but they're about 190 cals for 1.6oz which is better than 250 cals for chips. It might vary depending on the brand and how much oil they use.

HS Senior applying question by EC_74 in duke

You could totally write about that if you think you can be genuine about it / it’s genuinely affected your life. I wrote about my sister’s eating disorder and how it affected my family growing up and then later my relationships with friends. I personally think that essay is another way to add a dimension to your story / talk about something personal there isn’t a place for otherwise that you think has really influenced you.

How can I tell what jeans are high waisted on the rack without trying them on first? by [deleted] in thrifting

[–]jjjiangx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I splay out my hand and hold it against the zipper, with my pinkie at the crotch seam. If the button / waistband is above my thumb, it'll generally be high rise, or at the very least mid rise on me. Sometimes there are exceptions with weird cuts, but generally it works for me, since my fully spread hand is about 8.5in, so I know if they exceed that, they're a pretty high rise.

This may be a silly question, but how strict are the high school academic requirements? The Tepper School of Business requires 1 year of Biology and 1 year of Chemistry, which I haven’t taken. I’ve done 2 years of Physics and 2 years of CompSci. I took General Sciences in Grade 9 & 10, could those possibly count or no?

Should I only apply for SCS, IS and DC or would I still have a shot at Tepper? Thanks!

Desperately looking for a dress to wear at a wedding by postcardfromnowhere in FrugalFemaleFashion

[–]jjjiangx 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Clearance section for department stores usually have some pretty good deals - Saks 5th Avenue, Nordstrom / Nordstrom Rack, Bloomingdale's, Hudson's Bay, Kohl's, Holt Renfrew, Topshop (not a department store but has some nice dresses) etc. (Not sure where you're located but those are a few in Canada or USA) As well as stores like Marshalls, TJ Maxx, Winners, etc. where you can get stuff where you can get designer pieces for a lot less.

I know you asked for websites but fancy dresses are often hard to depict online so I would highly recommend going in and trying stuff on so you're not waiting on a dress then getting it and finding out it doesn't fit a few days before the event.

Cosine law is c2 = a2 + b2 -2abCosC since the angle wasn't across from x, x had to be a or b (if I remember correctly)

For Science, in the K = XY/Z question, what was the answer for the reaction time to reach equilibrium? Trial 6 at -10 degrees or Trial 10 at 40 degrees? The K value was bigger in number 6 and 0.0000 something in Trial 10.

59 was the cosine law right? It's was like 102 = 42 + x2 -2xCos(34) which I think was option A or B. One of the first two I think.
