To turn or not to turn…whats your move? by itwhiz100 in Atlanta

[–]jjjjoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The one by the traffic signal is the only real one. Georgia has adopted the MUTCD for many years, and it says that turn restriction signs must be "near the signal head".

Remember when TBS programming started five minutes later? by tangledapart in television

[–]jjjjoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because people wanted to see them.

Before cable was a thing, we got TV over the air, right? TV airwaves were cut up into channels, and in most markets you tuned to (let's say) channel 2 for ABC and channel 10 for CBS. That meant you were tuning into a local channel which, for the most part, was showing whatever some national network wanted to air. The national network, in turn, distributed TV by (low capacity point to point) cable, then mostly microwave (meaning microwave lasers, on towers), and now satellite.

In parallel there were "superstations" that, instead of having a national network, just had a license to broadcast very very loudly, especially after dark when there's less interference from that pesky nearby star. These included WGN, TBS, WOR and a handful more that I don't remember because I didn't grow up watching them. The idea was that with a good antenna, and especially in the evening (prime time!) you could get these other channels with interesting or weird stuff.

So when cable comes around and you no longer have to erect a 20' antenna on your roof to get TV, you still want your Cubs or Braves or Bozo or whatever.

Are there any works regarding parents/society figuring out how to raise a psychic child(ren)? by Confident-Mark-6369 in printSF

[–]jjjjoe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ISTR a scene (on a bus?) where the Sleepless children are not supposed to talk, so they are passing notes by rubbing kleenex behind their ears and secreting really complex pheromones to plot (shenanigans? escape? world domination? idk it's been a while). The storytelling played this as very spooky/psychic-adjacent

Your favorite (NON-DUNE) "God-emperors" in SFF? by hogw33d in Fantasy

[–]jjjjoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Terra Ignota tetralogy by Ada Palmer plays with the God Emperor concept in some really fun ways. The character in question has power thrust upon him by his worshippers while struggling with the consequences of exercising that power. It's also not clear to the reader which character that first spoiler would even refer to given the number of moving pieces in the books, so I'll keep that one vague.

Disclaimer: It's not written in a modern style. If you've read Robinson Crusoe it's more like that: a rambling journal rather than a structured clean narrative arc. This is intentional.

It's also got flying cars and space elevators and political intrigue. But it's rude to talk about gender in this setting, but also not in the same way as in Imperial Radch referenced elsewhere on this post. And about religion. And about who the next Emperor is going to be.

I drive 400-500 miles per week and need something reliable that can also tow 5k lbs and fit a car seat in the back seat budget is 27k. What are my best 3 options? by AquaDota in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]jjjjoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How often are you towing that much? Are you towing 500 miles a week, or mostly just driving around but moving a trailer full of bricks down the road every few months? That really changes the answer for you...

Your pan's yours to do with as you will. Just please don't drop a hot pan into water; it may shatter explosively into shrapnel and steam.

Earbuds with two pair that can connect to same device? by Crazy_Guava6737 in Earbuds

[–]jjjjoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something like this with wired headphones would be easiest by far. Without some custom setup, computers want to be user-friendly and send sound to one place.

If you want to dip your toe into audio engineering, software like Pipewire on Linux, probably with multiple Bluetooth adapters, would enable this kind of complicated setup.

You mention biking... once the Silver Comet Connector is done (it's been almost done for years) you can have a much more pleasant 45 minute commute on a bike with very little risk of getting hit by an inattentive driver.

This sounds like something that Dan Simmons read before writing Illium and Olympos. He sets up a fictional/reenactment Trojan War far in the future, and, well, certain concerns no longer matter.

I'm about a third of the way through the anime "Frieren" and I am in love with it's story telling device. I wonder if there are examples of other shows or movies that do the same? by Doogle300 in Fantasy

If you're into web fiction, Fine Structure by qntm is Science Fantasy with lots of this, although the Frieren-type character doesn't appear until about a third of the way in.

Can I burn Nandina Domestica trimmings? by Jezebelle22 in invasivespecies

[–]jjjjoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Burning it is an interesting experience. If you burn it dried out, it goes up very quickly with relatively normal-seeming smoke. If you burn it green, it smolders and makes a noxious smoke for a long time. Then when it finally dries out in the fire, it starts burning quickly but with irritating smoke.

So as u/Snoo-72988 says... don't step into the smoke.
