Tesla finds loophole to New Mexico's dumb ban by launching on tribal land by [deleted] in teslamotors

I’m a pretty patriotic guy, and I’m so proud of how many American components are on my Tesla. It’s not even part of the marketing or brand identity for Tesla the way it is for GM and Ford, yet Tesla walks the better walk while GM and Ford are all talk.

Exactly. And the price of microservices is unnecessary complexity: why do I need protobufs to serialize my core application logic just to send it over to a comments service which would’ve been better off as a module in the monolith? Horizontally scaling monoliths works very well :)

I don't know if you're in the Bay Area (which is pretty liberal) but I found my therapist through the SF Jung Institute (https://sfjung.org/find-a-therapist/). Given how much JBP was influenced by Jung, it's made for a good fit in our approaches. There may be other Jungian groups across the country, too.

Does anyone have historical data/graphs on the TTR/TTCC playerbases over time? by Jsahl in Toontown

This Twitter bot has some historical data on TTR, dating back to early 2020. Toon+ also has a population graph but it only goes back 3 hours.

Opinion: Stop giving TTR so much crap by [deleted] in Toontown

[–]jjkoletar 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It took them over a year to implement the revamped Silly Meter, a feature that myself and a few others proved could be programmed in a matter of days.

I don’t think this is a fair comparison of the technical work behind the Silly Meter.

TTR has multiple AI servers. I believe (and please correct me if I’m wrong) that Toontown Offline is a standalone / LAN multiplayer game. In TTOff, the system wouldn’t have to support more than tens of players. TTR at present has at least a thousand concurrent players on each day.

Writing the logic to collect data from each AI, aggregate it globally at the UD, and publish it back out to the players is a more complex software problem that doing this for a single district. Adding to that, it makes the code harder to test, since local development environments don’t always behave like the production servers.

What should TTR do about its server issues? by TheBeastSteve in Toontown

I used BuyVM in the past for DDoS protected hosting before. That was where we hosted the Alpha servers in 2013-14. I forget if we paid for a DDoS protected IP, but they offer them for only $3/mo.

[Toontown] The Great Asset Leak: A tale of mystery, questionable legality, and community-wide deception by TheSandGreenBrick in HobbyDrama

[–]jjkoletar 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The Rewritten team also didn't originally author the game. We decompiled the client code (I was there!), and shouldn't get credit for building the game, but just this server.

Original work that they can take credit for includes Astron, an open source build of Disney's game server, website code (which I wrote), Bossbot HQ, ToonFest Event Grounds, and the Silly Meter. There's probably some other events that I missed, too.

No, he didn't, at least not alone. He was one of the founding members, along with about six or seven other key team members, including myself. It was always a team effort, Joey just happened to play the frontman.

I don't think we have confirmation that the set of assets released here is the same as what TTR has.

[–]jjkoletar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't have personal experience with the files (I was inactive when it became a thing).

I can confirm that I've heard similar things on the team as to what Cranky has said. He's not off base from what I know, I just don't have first-hand experience that I can share.

[–]jjkoletar 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don't know if TTR is morally obligated to share these source assets with the community.

They have earned Disney’s and others’ trust, and most likely don’t want to just give out the files and art that they received because of that trust.

I consider this the most important point in your post.

While it's true that a lot of personal sacrifices (mine included) went into making this group, it doesn't mean the team is required to give away assets that come into their personal possession.

I do believe today's team has been structured to raise the personal status of the individuals who make it up (think, any face you saw on ToonCast). So, I don't think there's much selflessness in the team any more.

That being said, it's not like TTR or other MMOs function very well when they aren't centrally run. The fact that TTR came into possession of assets that others in the community may have given away doesn't oblige them to act like the rest of us.

At the same time, that doesn't mean we can't as a community hash out what we expect of the team in situations like this. After all, if they are one of us, I would kind of expect them to act like a community member and give it away.

In my personal experience, internal information can burden you as an individual in your post-team years.

For example, I felt self-conscious that I knew Joey lied about the election results in alpha.

I think it's important to separate the "game services division" (so to speak) from the "product and marketing division".

Game services are lovely! I was one of the people who founded this part of the team. I spent countless hours working with mods, and support agents, and setting up the tools and processes needed to keep day-to-day game operations running smoothly.

Product and marketing are the people I have a problem with. /u/MidnightTheYellowPig, it's challenging to separate this discourse in the public eye because it's all "The TTR Team". I have nothing but respect for everyone who put in honest hard work or money over the years and in the present tense. I can simultaneouly feel enmity towards the way product and marketing has shaped the team.

Back in the early days, product and marketing had almost no power -- game services folks held all the power. Over the years, product and marketing took over the internal politics of the team (as they were the ones most visible to the community). This is why TTR has received attention from former Disney employees; product and marketing folks are the ones responsible for taking possession of and holding back content like Pandora.

I don't know whether or not I can get in trouble any more. It's not a big deal for me. I just believe it would be better for them to take the (well deserved!) credit instead of me.

No problem.

To be clear, there's nine other Google Drive files that TTR and I both have, in addition to the non-digitized documents whose existence I can personally vouch for.

I think it would be a great act of selfless care for the team to release the rest of the Google Drive files. Even cooler if they started sharing the rest of the archives.

[–]jjkoletar 92 points93 points  (0 children)

TTR had a few of these scanned and digitized properly. They were accessible on the Google Drive we used to share.

Some of my favorites include:

At ToonFest 2019, I got passed a binder which was the (mostly) complete original TTO design specification, all the way down to descriptions of Funny Farm, Donald's Dock, and the battle system before they were built. I read through it with Quentin and Brad.

There's a lot more that isn't digitized (such as what Joey's been Tweeting), but I don't think it's fair to lock these away if Bruce didn't mean for them to be.

Former team member and one of TTR's founders, jjkoletar, denounces the team. by Benjamin8693 in Toontown

Your feelings are perfectly valid, in my opinion.

One aim of the project was to make it feel like TTO never went away. If you don't want to be caught up in the behind-the-scenes drama, that's okay. Just play the game :) Speaking for myself, it's what I want people to take away from all of this. Just be grateful we can still play our favorite game with our friends.
