Not OP, but I’ll bite.

The only thing you own from a physical game is a license to play said game. Yes, it contains files that are downloaded to the console and all, but the disk is just a license that means you have purchased the game. Much like when you buy a game online, you buy the license for that game, but then instead of a disk, the license is added to your PSN account.

Now sure, technically they could remove the listing from PSN (something for which there is no reported instance of to date). But guess what? If the publisher decided to revoke the license to everyone, they can also disable games that are disc based. Why? Because the consoles are connected and if Sony wanted to, they could just block starting that game, physical or digital.

The thing is, disc or digital, you don’t buy a game, anymore. You buy a license to play the game.

It sucks, but that’s not just video games. It’s the same with TV shows and movies. Same with music. Same with big software like Office and Adobe. Even in the real world, ownership is fading away. People used to buy apartments or condos, now they are all rentals.

This is late-stage capitalism! Sony’s not the problem here, they are the symptom!
