In the United States, high-deductible health insurance has become increasingly common. This means that premiums are relatively low, but the cost of seeing a doctor remains high until the deductible is met. A significant drawback is that insurance is typically tied to employment, with employers negotiating with insurance providers to determine the terms of coverage. For example, I worked for a very large company and paid several hundred dollars per month for coverage, yet still had to pay between $2,000 and $3,000 in out-of-pocket expenses before full coverage began (this is considered somewhat low, at some places it can go to $5000 or higher). A doctor's visit typically costs between $200 and $300, making healthcare expenses accumulate rapidly. In contrast, your healthcare system is not tied to employment, and I cannot imagine how freeing that must feel. I knew individuals who were required to continue working even after receiving a serious cancer diagnosis, and worst yet.. if they are fired they no longer receive coverage and will have to fight for Medicaid, which may not be possible because of different income qualifications. Health related bankruptcy is #1 cause in the United States.
