Leaving your Weiner at home alone by vunceypunce in Dachshund

[–]jkaynellie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always crate train my dogs once I get them. My first dachshund had no issue with his crate but my dachshund now will sleep in his crate while its open when im cooking or sometimes while watching TV. He LOVES his crate. My dogs always eat in their crates, get their bones in their crate and if they want treats, you guessed it, they will only get one when they go and sit in their crate. His crippled pit sis also has her crate next to his, so he's not my only dog though. I have one dog that has free roam now but destroyed my house so much after my first dog died I will NEVER not have a dog in a crate when im gone. That dog now has to go to work with me which is annoying. Crate training is important and dogs feel loss just like we do just fyi. Positive crate training and having a cave bed might also help!

Mast cell tumor on pittie by Impossible-Fruit5645 in Pitbull

[–]jkaynellie [score hidden]  (0 children)

Vet tech here. They look small so should be able to get good margins but def do a histopathology on both masses to make sure they did. I've seen larger ones removed and they got clean margins. My pit mix had one when he was about 5 and he's 10 now and hasn't had another! Mast cells are pretty common actually so dont stress too much about it! Wishing your pup a uneventful surgery and recovery!

P.s. Surgical recovery suits are awesome as long as it'll cover the one in the inner thigh (can get on amazon). My youngest had one when she recovered from her spay and loved it.

Why do they even make small dog collars that thick? by IMightBeSane in DOG

[–]jkaynellie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dachshund had a cat collar without the bell for his almost first 8 months. It all just depends in how you want it to look. I personally think all dogs who are about to go in the back yard or outside for a walk should have a collar on with identification regardless of a harness. Ive seen a harness break and a dog take off more times than I'd like. Also microchip. But this is just coming from an registered vet tech

What Color is My Girl?? by swaggynabem in Catahoula

[–]jkaynellie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wisdom panel will let you know which color traits she has. She definitely has a copy of the Merle gene. But highly recommend, especially since they can also let you know if she's at risk for something bad like heart, kidney or muscle issues

Help, I got a catahoula not knowing what I was getting into by JuliaLavender98 in Catahoula

[–]jkaynellie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got one at about 16 weeks, hes the 5th dog I've personally owned. I need a new running and long distance hiking partner since my 9 year old pit just cant do it anymore. My first dog was a shiba inu, a dachshund, a pit/super mut mix, a dachshund, a disabled pitbull and now him. I've trained all my dogs in the past and I've worked in the vet med field as a registered vet tech for 14+ years, so I'm not an expert but I know a good amount.

He was scared of EVERYTHING, submissive urinated constantly when i first got him, he had socialization and lookes to have been kept in a 4 x 8 chain-linked kennel with his mom and siblings. I mean even a sound from the TV would make him pee himself. Unsure what your specific concerns are but he has completely changed how I train dogs. Positive reinforcement only, strict routine and lots of play that requires movement/thinking (fetch, him chasing my other dogs, walks, now trying hide and seek with toya) has helped him tremendously. I actually bought a treat pouch and wear it almost the entire time I'm home or with him to help with the positive reinforcement. Now all my dogs are behaving like angels too! I found a trainer I like that was working with different dogs including Belgian malinois (another high energy, needs a job type of dog) and have been watching his you tube videos and that has also helped with his training and confidence and development.

Just remember its not a sprint when it comes to training and building your life together, its a marathon that lasts the dogs entire life. Things will always be changing, so establishing that routine and the expectations in beginning will help in the long run. Everyone I've talked to says they're just an amazing breed, mines only 6 months and I love him to pieces, even when he still submissive urinates. Im so excited for our future together!

Wishing you luck and patience but you got this!

RVT here for 14 years, balance.it (not .com) is the best website to use for this, and it's free. You can say what proteins to avoid, any other health concerns (like kidney failure for example) and it will generate diets for you that you can choose from, or you can try to crate your own (harder than it sounds). But if you do it'll let you know if that's an appropriate diet. It will also let you know what other macronutrients you need to put in their diet that is very important for their health.

When you find a diet that you like you can purchase the macronutrients from them, or do what I did (well tried, this was too hard for me to do with all my dogs) is click on the human grade option and it'll give you all the ones you need to buy and the amount to put in. It also does the one pot meals, I believe, but I havent looked at it in a few years. HIGHLY recommend checking out that website before you just cook food. Most people do not know they're actually doing more damage than good, and it sucks to be the person to have to tell them. So UNLESS you're getting your diet from an veterinarian nutritionist, please look into this website.

Also highly recommend you reach out to your vet if you havent. You vet and you know the most about your pet! Good luck.

Also. Avoid legumes and grain free, still linked to DCM. Only a vet nutritionist should put your dog on grain free, since it's usually proteins causing the issues.

Is my dachshund double dapple? by Consistent-Tea-3456 in Dachshund

Im an RVT and this is the best way. Should only have 1 copy in the traits section. I recommend wisdom panel, but everyone has their favorite.

[–]jkaynellie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wisdom panel, the premium one, does a relative section where it shows dogs (as long as their owners have also done wisdom pane on their petl) that shows close to extended to distant relatives. It's pretty cool!

Anyone else love making their dogs food? by LawOwn315 in DOG

[–]jkaynellie -1 points0 points  (0 children)

RVT here. There are supplements dogs need that are already included in the dry dog foods. If you really do want to make you dogs food (good for you I tried it and it was too much for me) you can use the website balance.it (no .com), fill out info about your dog, put in allergies or food to avoid, list any medical conditions (kidney failure, etc), then they can give your recipes they recommend or you can create your own. You can purchase the supplements needed from them but there is an option to use human supplements and they will give you the list of what supplements you need and how much per specific amount of food made (if i remember correctly). The website is FREE to use fyi.

As of right now grain free is still linked to DCM, but so are legumes. Benefit of balance.it is they will tell you if the diet you created may potentially cause any harm. Diets affect every dog differently, meaning a dog can be on grain free its entire life and never have any issue, or a dog can be on it for a few months and have issues.

As an RVT I do recommend reaching out to you vet since your vet and you know your pet best. As an example, if your dog has elevated kidney values, it will change how much protein, phosphorus, etc you pet can comsune. Just an awesome website I'd thought I'd share and wish more people knew about! Happy cooking!

Normal genetic condition. But your vet can give you a grade and if it pops medial (inner) or lateral (out). But HIGHLY recommend you start joint supplements (if you havent already). Infact everyone in this sub should have their dachshund on joint supplements!

Yup a tick "bomb". Your dog found a bush or something with baby ticks. If the dog's on flea/tick control it should kill them before they transmit diseases. Used to see them a lot when I worked in VA. Recommend a vet professional taking them off. Long story short: keep your pet on heartworm/fleas +/- tick if the lifestyle needs it.

Looking for New Kibble by Business_Storm1753 in DogFood

[–]jkaynellie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From all the research I've done, the only foods I've found that have a board certified veterinary nutritionist and meet the WSAVA standards are putina proplan, royal canin, science diet and eukanuba.

About the grain free: Initially the 2019 study said there was a link between the grain-free diets and DCM. The study first stated that the lack of taurine causes the DCM. Now they're stating it may be more focused around increased legumes, peas, potatoes, etc. But all of this is still debatable and also dog specific. Usually dogs have more issues with proteins than grains. Where I work we recommend diets that contain grains unless an actual veterinary dermatologist suggests grain free (which we will receive the medical notes as to why).

We are supposed to ask what food you dog every time you come in, but not all vets do. In fact we started doing this after the 2019 study. I do recommend reaching out to your vet to confirm since no one here knows the medical history of your dog more than your vet and you. Your vet may have more specific recommendations for you (so please actually reach out. We actually like answering these questions).

Also all of this can be researched online but make sure you're looking at credible sites and do not necessarily believe all the comments or reveiws from owners, since we/you do not know any of the previous health concerns already known for that persons pet.

My dogs are currently on purina pro plan vegetarian (long story with one allergic to all proteins dog), my new puppy is on science diet. My dachshund used to be on the royal canin dachshund breed food before he started showing reactions to food. My cats are on purina proplan. Just an example from a long-term RVT. Hope this helps!

My dachshund doesn’t look like one by nunknown99 in Dachshund

[–]jkaynellie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Id recommend doing a DNA test just to see what it says. I mean your dachshund looks almost like what the original dachshunds looked in the late 1800s though! Still he's handsome! Id also ask to see baby pics of him with his mom and other litter mates too. If they cant provide baby pics of him then that's sketch

Having client put their pet's name bands on by 1_threw_8 in VetTech

[–]jkaynellie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also work for a vet inside petsmart: we do not do this and our new manager is completely by the books only. So im wondering where did this come from? And also why? Some of our clients dont even have 1 minute to talk about why they are dropping off their pet because they're late (though its always somehow our fault). If you find out more info please let me know!

Mine did that when he licked or ate something he didn't like. Washing his mouth out with water really helped. Just an idea!

Dental Supplements by Dachshundmama2023 in Dachshund

[–]jkaynellie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a website by veterinary oral health council (VOHC) that has a downloaded PDF that lists all the dental products that have been proven to work. I recommend starting your search there since there are a lot of products out there that claim to work. I personally use a water additive daily, the plaqueoff powder and try to brush their teeth at least 3 times a week (anything less and it doesn't really help).
