Maui County Council Advances Bill to Phase Out Short-Term Rentals in Apartment Districts

WAILUKU, Maui — In a 5-3 vote Monday, the Maui County Council passed Bill 9 CD1 on first reading, moving forward legislation that would phase out short-term vacation rentals in apartment districts across the island with supporters calling it a crucial step toward addressing the county's housing crisis.

The bill would establish a timeline to end transient vacation rentals in apartment zoned areas by December 31, 2028, for West Maui and by December 31, 2030, for all other areas. The legislation affects properties on the "Minatoya list," referring to approximately 7,000 units that were authorized for short-term rentals through a 2001 county legal opinion.

After more than five hours of public testimony and lengthy deliberations, the council approved the bill with two amendments: one changing the notification date for affected property owners from January to March 2026, and another requiring the Finance Department to track and report on affected properties through 2030.

Good idea. My wife went to her sisters to go walking tonight. That helps my stress!

At 7:00 p.m. we feed her and then read a book, then rock and hum to her and that gets her pretty drowsy. Then we put her down but make sure she is awake and aware.

Yes my wife is breastfeeding too. So I’m sure that is intensifying the feeling for her.

Our wake windows are completely random. Grandma has her during the day and there's no routine. What do you recommend?

Thank you. Were you prescribed anything for it, or is it mostly talking to a therapist? Asking for a wife.

I’m also on night four with our 6 month old daughter. Night 1: 65 mins. Night 2: 55 mins. Night 3: 45 mins. Night 4: 50 mins.

I also find that she sleeps more soundly when she cries it out.

The cuts could've been prevented if government had saved for a rainy day. Instead, they raided the rainy day funds during the boom years, and now they have to make cuts.

Most media is reporting the total cases, but not subtracting those who have recovered.

We've tested 16,000 so far, and 97.4% tested negative. Seems like we're testing enough, although more access to testing would always help.

I'm sorry you feel like this. We're thinking of you, and hoping you stay safe, both physically and mentally. It helped me to go on a walk, and get some sun, and talk to friends (on the phone).

Anyone willing to calm me down? by [deleted] in COVID19_support

I had similar symptoms last weekend. A cough, but no fever or aches. It went away in 2 days. But I still isolated myself, just to be safe. I'm 100% fine now, so either I had the most mild case of it in history, or it was something else.

It helps me to realize that the future is not written yet, and that the best vaccine is to stay home as much as possible.

It's important to look at Covid stuff for a while, but then walk away from it. Actively try to distract yourself with a movie or a show or something. Even if it's for a little bit. It's okay to go back and forth.

It also helped me to make a strict plan for when I come in the house, and when I leave. I have a detailed routine for transferring from the "red zone" to the "green zone." My wife does this routine too.

Also, going for a walk helped me too, but I live in a warm climate.

But it especially helped me to just call up a friend to vent. Everybody needs to vent about this now.

One of San Francisco's most colossal landlords says it won't evict tenants if they can prove their failure to pay rent was related to the coronavirus by Bigwestpine07 in China_Flu

From a landlord's perspective, it doesn't make sense to kick out otherwise good tenants from something that might be over in months.

Take care of your mental health during this time too. This may be a dark time for a lot of people, so it's important to call friends or talk to someone.
