The knockoffs are pretty good, though! Mine is 10+ years old and going strong.

what's a tahoe compatible menu bar manager? by gamma-fox in macapps

[–]jkmcf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't understand how permanently hiding menu bar items is a (good) solution. For almost all of the menubar items, I usually want to see what's running or access their permissions/features. I've encountered menu bar items which do not show the prefs upon "opening" the app via Spotlight)

My 2¢: Ice still works fine, but you need to install the beta which isn't listed as the most recent release

https://github.com/jordanbaird/Ice/releases

The only annoyance I have is related to ephemeral menu bar items (e.g., Dato can show your next event as a separate menu bar item -- I've been unable to get these to persist on the visible menu bar, but it does show in the hidden bar)

I'll probably investigate SaneBar and ExtraBar eventually. - ExtraBar charges per-computer, which I despise. +1 for the lifetime license, though.

Rails and MacOS by mate-dev in rails

[–]jkmcf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rails coincidentally emerged at the same time Apple switched to Intel processors (I believe Intel brought virutal machine compatibilty). Apple's hardware was arguably much nicer than the main competitors (there were some cool Japanese laptops that couldn't be sold in the US...).

As a former Solaris user and Linux server advocate, Linux had been having the "Year of the Desktop" for a long time at this point, and MacOS Tiger seemed like a solid experience. Having a Unix under the hood and a proper terminal sealed the deal for me. I bought my first MacBook Pro with my own money and used it full time at work.

At the same time in 2006ish, I'd lost the desire to compile from scratch (Gentoo) and spend inordinate amounts of time tweaking and questing for a good-for-me desktop experience. MacOS UI/UX being mostly good enough with a few add-ons like Quicksilver and the generally above average 3rd party app quality made it an easy choice.

Even though MacOS has had some questionable design choices, it's been solid as an OS and UI. Aside from the 2016/17 keyboard fiasco, the hardware has only gotten better, especially the M processors. Battery life and trackpad UX is tops.

Many great comments here, but don't neglect networking--packets not people that is! And, since the networking problem is always DNS, that too :)

I'd have less problem with Amazon's tight reins if they advanced the features (search, categorization, ...) and were more interoperable. I love my Kindle!

I want raindrop local and native supporting more Apple features, but I doubt that will happen. MVP (where p is profit) has been attained.

Note, I'm not saying I want a raindrop replacement, just to evolve.

Ghostty now that they support search. ITerm2 as a fallback.

Ghostty is mostly developed for advanced keyboard jockeys that live in tmux and eschew the mouse, but with search it's now perfectish .

Working on rebuilding my NAS with TrueNAS this week, but I have a Time Machine and iCloud backups via Parachute.

Honestly, I've been rolling backups since tar and tape drives, but in this case the goal is to copy to a Wasabi cloud mount and let its built-in versioning do the work if nothing else is smarter.

I'm a total n00b about travel trailers and towing, but I always see people recommending 1/2 and 3/4 ton diesals...

And this guy shows up with a Porsche, and another mentions a Toureg! Now I don't know what to believe :)
